Taking experiences from the life-cycle of a recent new build project, we will review the complex path that must be navigated to deliver a new data center and the interactions between the data center owner/developer and the utility. Highlighted Topics: Site selection (State, region, utility provider, reliability, capacity) Utility provider process (easy or DIFFICULT???) Forecasting (real or imagined?) Site design implications (multiple grids ) Feeder construction and delivery Testing and commissioning Expansion planning and growth - Todd Gale, Vice President Data Center Architecture & Innovation, ViaWest, Inc. 10:00 10:30 a.m. Networking Break 10:30 11:15 a.m. Data Centers/Utilities Developing a Successful Partnership A look into the varying models of data center developers and owners and what that means for the serving utility. From utility requirements to substation reliability, to overhead versus underground construction, some utilities have adapted well to the ever changing landscape of the data center industry while others have not. This presentation will give some basic examples as to what most data center companies are looking for to achieve greater success with a utility and will also provide some stories of success and failures. Highlighted Topics: Initial needs of a data center Available capacity Wonderful overview of N, N+1, 2N (N, N-1, N-2) decision criteria in a very Diversification dynamic business sector Ongoing service Response times Gene Larson, Vice President Project Development, Where are data centers on the priority list for utilities SNC-Lavalin Thermal Power Are these data center guys for real? -Patrick Murphy PE, ATD, CEM, Director Utility Power North America, Digital Realty 3
4 Agenda Monday, September 29, 2014 (Continued) 11:15 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Utilities Challenges System Planning, Distribution, Customer Service, Capacity Colorado Springs is home to several large data centers, including five (5) with redundant electric service to the facility. Through this experience, Colorado Springs Utilities has learned some valuable lessons regarding system planning, distribution operations, customer service, and the economics of providing capacity to large data centers. Some of the challenges include helping customers - both internal and external - understand the differences between capacity and reliability. In recent years, Colorado Springs Utilities has brought more formality to the definitions, processes, and standards used to provide Enhanced Power Service to 7x24 mission-critical facilities. This presentation will highlight the challenges and opportunities of providing capacity to large data centers from an engineering and a program management perspective. - Mike Allison, Principal Engineer, Colorado Springs Utilities - Anna Seder, Program Manager, Enhanced Power Service, Colorado Springs Utilities 12:00 1:00 p.m. Group Luncheon 1:00 2:00 p.m. Utility Case Study: Balancing Innovation, Security, and Reliability The pace and growth of information technology is unprecedented. With the proliferation of lower cost and easier to access technologies, utilities must balance innovation, security, and reliability in order to maintain critical IT infrastructure. We must ask ourselves, what does the next generation data center look like? Is it a single location or multiple locations capable of providing any service and any time in a cost effective, energy efficient manner? How is The Cloud impacting the utility landscape? How do I plan for elastic growth and still gain energy efficiencies? - Paul Nielsen, Sr. Manager of Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity, and Data Center Services, PG&E 2:00 3:00 p.m. Utility Case Study: How PECO Energy is Working to Retain and Attract Data Centers Faced with the unexpected shutdown of several large industrial customers, one east coast utility looked at the future and started doing something about it. This session will describe how PECO has contemplated and implemented strategies to address: The threat of load loss Identifying under-served markets Attracting inter-related customers Placing the focus on areas of economic strength - Ed Piscopo, Regional Director, Economic Development, PECO 3:00 3:30 p.m. networking Break I like the fact the class is the right size, so I can meet and connect with many utility folks from across the country Joe Cruz, Key Account Manager, Tucson Electric Power Company REGISTER 4601 TODAY! Historically states have resisted economic development incentives for data center development do to the lack of job creation. States /utilities are starting to recognize the potential of data center development as a result of tax revenue, load growth, primary and secondary job creation and economic development value. Currently there are over 16 states with targeted incentives for the industry with Arizona and Texas recent additions and Colorado with pending legislation. These incentives include property tax abatements, sales tax exemptions, specialized rate structures and energy conservation. The coupling of available incentives provides a significant incentive to the energy and capital intensive data center industry. This presentation will provide examples of available incentives and demonstrate the value of data center development in your service territory. - William Steffens, Principal, Sugarloaf Associates - Timothy Comerford Senior Vice President, Biggins Lacy & Shapiro 10:00 10:30 a.m. Networking Break 10:30 11:15 a.m. Utility Case Study: AEP s Strategy Marketing to the Data Center Industry American Electric Power s economic and business development team is charged with growing the electricity consumption across its service territory.
