1 Vegetation Basics Basically, vegetation is a name for the plant life of a region. it can also refer to the ground cover provided by plants. When there is a large area of similar plant life, people call these large areas Vegetation Zones. Although there are many different types of vegetation zones, for the purposes of a survey course of World Geography, we will discuss the eleven main zones: Ice Cap Tundra Desert Desert Scrub Temperate Grassland Tropical grassland Chaparral Deciduous Forest Boreal (Tiaga) Forest Coniferous Forest Broadleaf Evergreen Forest The Four Factors of Vegetation - STEM Soil Temperature Elevation Moisture SAISD Social Studies Department Page 1

10 Vegetation Zones: Boreal (Taiga) Forest I Characteristics: found in the broad belt of Eurasia and North America: two-thirds in Siberia with the rest in Scandinavia, Alaska, and Canada. Seasons are divided into short, moist, and moderately warm summers and long, cold, and dry winters. The length of the growing season in boreal forests is 130 days.
