1 APPROVED MINUTES CORL STREET ELEMENTARY PTO BOARD MEETING JUNE 7, 2011 Minutes: Attendance: Scott Mato (Principal), Lonni Friedken (President), Anna Childe-Muramoto (Vice-President), Sue Barger (Treasurer), Linda Erickson (Secretary), Becky Misangyi, Michele Rowland, David Hutchinson (SCASD Board Member) 1. Call to order: Welcome and introduction of members present: Lonni Friedken called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. and members signed in. 2. Approval of Minutes: With corrections, Sue Barger motioned to approve the May 10, 2011 PTO Board Meeting minutes. Michele Rowland seconded the motion. Motion passed. 3. President s Report: Lonni Friedken extended thanks to all who pulled together and made things happen this year. It was a great year and a lot was accomplished. 4. Principal s Report: Scott Mato reported. Mr. Mato reflected on all the positive things that have happened at Corl Street this year. We had great community support in the sundial project and the new signage, landscaping, etc. Mrs. Kondash s class posted a U-Tube video on a region of Japan affected by the volcano and tsunami. There were funds raised by students in response to recent tornados (over $1,000) and Read to Feed ($3,056) with which animals were decided upon and purchased by the students through Heifer International. Math Expressions is the curriculum being presented for approval. It has been an extensive process. Teachers are previewing the program and materials will be ordered upon school board approval. The math curriculum has been rewritten and teachers are working to ensure that any gaps in the curriculum be filled consistently. Corl Street PTO 6/7/11 Meeting 1

2 There will be a new testing program measuring academic progress for grades 3 through 5, beginning next year. There will be a parent information night in the fall. Current standardized tests for reading and math will be replaced by this method of testing. It will allow the district to gather extensive date that will be shared with parents. September will be the first round of testing. Students will be able to be compared both nationally and internationally. The test results will allow individualized planning for student education. Budget cuts will result in field trips being limited to three trips per grade, tied to curriculum. Corl Street will not be affected to a great degree. The Gettysburg trip for the 5 th grade has been abolished. 5 th grade teachers will pursue an alternative field trip tied to curriculum. The teachers are open to discussing alternatives with parents. There will be staffing changes at Corl Street for the next school year. Mrs. Poorman and Mrs. Goeke will be transferring to Mt. Nittany Elementary. Stacy Fox is being furloughed. Ms. McGuire will remain in a part time clerical position. There will be part time secretarial support from Mt. Nittany Elementary as well. There is a part-time IST position being advertised. An ESL position may be changing. A Title I teacher on leave will be returning. We will have a new school psychologist. There will be another 2 nd grade teacher. It could be Mrs. Casey, but the position will be advertised, as she was a predictable term substitute. Furloughed employees must be considered for positions first. 5. Open Forum: Becky Misangyi suggested we look at having some sort of ceremony or acknowledgement for 5 th graders leaving Corl Street. Mr. Mato will talk it over with the teachers. 6. Teacher s Representatives: Lonni Friedken reported for teachers on the Read to Feed and Flood & Tornado projects done by students to collect funds. 7. Treasurer s Report: Budget Review: Sue Barger presented current income/expenses and the budget (information attached). Due to funds budgeted for yearbook and teacher appreciation not being used, we were able to finish the year within the original budgeted amount. Corl Street PTO 6/7/11 Meeting 2

3 Teacher Allocations: We will be able to do teacher allocations for the upcoming school year and to increase IPFN funds. We will have to wait for all expenses to be closed out and for the audit to be completed before we can address these issues. Leslie Byer will complete the audit for the PTO. 8. Request for Funds: None. 9. Standing Committee Reports: a. Newsletter: Michele Rowland reported. She thanked those who have contributed to the monthly newsletter. She has some things to pass on to the new chair and expressed her willingness to help someone get things set up next year. b. Garden: Becky Misangyi reported. There is a lot currently planted and lots that will be able to used in the classrooms. Bunnies have been a problem. Michele Rowland provided information on a toolbox grant program that is done by Lowe s that Corl Street could apply for and potentially receive funds to, for example, fence in the garden, etc. Mrs. Misangyi indicated a need for more people to water the garden during the summer. Maintenance of the landscaping in the front of the school was discussed. Mr. Mato suggested that perhaps the teachers could establish a schedule for students to help weed and maintain the new gardens. c. Expo: Becky Misangyi reported. Mrs. Ross room looks like the best option for performances. There has been low participation for 5 th graders and Mrs. Misangyi would like to encourage more involvement. 10. New Business: None. 11. Old Business: Lonni Friedken had suggested earlier in the year to utilize 5 th grade students on the first day of school to help get students to their classrooms. Scott Mato would like to have that done and Lonni will organize same. Mrs. Friedken indicated she has yet to receive response about the list serve. Mr. Mato will make contact with the appropriate staff on this matter to get things in place. Corl Street PTO 6/7/11 Meeting 3

4 Volunteers continue to be needed for the PTO Board. President, Vice-President and Treasurer positions are open. Committee Chairs are still needed for the Newsletter and the Yearbook. 12. Adjournment: Lonni Friedken called the meeting to close at 8:19 p.m. Corl Street PTO 6/7/11 Meeting 4
