2 New York State Requirements Total number of students enrolled in our five elementary schools: 1,692 Elementary students must receive instruction designed to promote their academic achievement, social and physical development consistent with New York State Standards in English Language Arts, Social Studies, mathematics, Science, Technology, the Arts, Health and Physical Education.

6 Elementary Curriculum Guided by the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) English Language Arts (ELA), math, social studies, science, health, physical education, art, music, and media. In English Language Arts, components include: Reading Foundational skills, vocabulary development, comprehension, genre balance, balance of instructional level and text complexity; Writing Writer s Workshop: includes personal narrative, opinion writing, and informational writing; Speaking /Listening speaking in front of groups, formally and informally; listening to speakers, listening for comprehension.

(Math In Focus; NYS modules) Social Studies, Science and Health interdisciplinary/integrated (NYS Social Studies Framework; Science ESP kits; Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Robotics; K-5 Niskayuna health curriculum) Special areas art, music, library, physical education

8 Assisting Students in Meeting Expectations Student Support Teams (SST) Members: Principal, psychologist, AIS and special education teachers, speech teacher, classroom teachers Purpose: A collaborative forum to problem solve for individual students experiencing difficulties academically, socially or behaviorally Intervention plans are put into place and then revisited after a period of implementation (Response to Intervention (RTI) plans)

9 Academic Intervention Service (AIS) Goal of the Program: Provide remediation - strategy and skill development - for students approaching grade level expectations and standards in reading and math. Program Delivery: A tiered system using pull out or push in models. Size of group and duration of instruction dependent on student need. Identification Process: All students are reviewed using our current AIS criteria New York State Test results District Assessments: NWEA-Measures of Academic Progress, Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment, classroom assessments (ex- math unit tests) and other common classroom assessments

10 Special Education Continuum of services: consultant teacher services, resource room, special class, self-contained programs Self-contained district programs: K-2 Skills 3-5 Skills Integrated Management Needs (IMN) K-2 IMN 3-5 Related services: speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy Staffing (teachers and teacher assistants (TAs) based on student IEP needs)

11 English Language Learners (ELL/ESL) Total number of elementary students receiving ESL services: 68 Total number of languages spoken by students: 20 Goal of the Program: Build English Language Proficiency- pass New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) Program Delivery: Pull out or push in instruction, includes some multi-age/grade groups. Minutes per week range from depending on level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) Identification Process: New York State mandates English Language instruction for students identified as not proficient in speaking, listening and writing. New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners( NYSITELL) New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT)
