2 SOC SCENE Page 2 Spring Break Leadership Opportunity! Students Today Leaders Forever Pay It Forward Tour What are YOU doing over spring break? Consider a Students Today Leaders Forever Pay it Forward Tour. Our motto is revealing leadership through service, relationships, and action. Every spring break, STLF sends out 6 buses full of 40 students to cities across the country doing service projects along the way and building relationships on Pay It Forward Tours. This year, we are sending buses to: Dallas Atlanta Washington, D.C. More information can be found here: Beinecke Scholarships for Graduate Study in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences! Outstanding juniors with financial need who intend to pursue a PhD or MFA in the arts, humanities, or social sciences are invited to enter the campus nomination process for the 2013 Beinecke Scholarships. The U of M is among a select group of institutions that may nominate a student for this prestigious national scholarship, which provides up to $34,000 for graduate study. 20 recipients will be selected from approximately 100 top colleges and universities. Eligibility criteria: current junior (will graduate between 12/2013 and 8/2014); superior intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise; U.S. citizen or national; history of qualifying for need-based financial aid. Students who would like to be considered for nomination by the U may obtain the campus application instructions from the University Honors Program front desk in 20 Nicholson Hall or by ing a request to natschol@umn.edu. Three therapy dogs (and their human companions) will be coming to campus next Wednesday, December 12, 12 to 3 p.m, at 303 Coffman Union - the flier is attached. CLA Alumni Careers Database! CLA Career Services recently launched its new CLA Alumni Careers database that allows students to read profiles and advice from graduates of the University of Minnesota College of Liberals Arts. Users can search alumni profiles by major or job field, or they can browse the entire database to read CLA alumni career stories. Graduate-Level Couse in Dar es Salaam! For the third year in a row, Prof. Ed Goetz will offer a graduate-level course in Dar es Salaam. There is a $1500 course fee and with airfare and incidentals, students can figure on a total cost of around $3700. Learning Abroad Center Jobs! The Learning Abroad Center is hiring four new student employees! As a previous study abroad student, we thought you may be interested in joining our team. We are searching for an Enrollment Services Assistant (Requisition #: ), a Graphic Designer (Requisition #: ), an Outreach Assistant (182003) and a Peer Advisor (181958). FLAS Fellowship Institute for Global Studies is now accepting nominations for the Fellowship in European and International Studies, Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS). The competition is open to undergraduate, graduate and professional students to promote the study of modern foreign languages and in particular less-commonly-taught languages in European and International studies. Summer Fellowships provide $2500 living stipend and $5000 towards tuitions and fees for undergrads, graduate and professional students. Academic Fellowships provide undergraduates with a $5000 living stipend and $10,000 towards tuition and fees. The deadline for nominations is February 15, 2013 by 4:30 p.m. Eligibility, complete details and nomination forms are available online by clicking on the FLAS page of the IGS website

KOHL'S SOPHOMORE SHADOW DAY Friday, January 11, 2013 Register by Tuesday, December 4th The Kohl's Sophomore Shadow program is a great opportunity for sophomores to learn about and experience different departments and career paths within Kohl's organization, as well as network with Kohl's associates and each other. During the event, sophomores will have the opportunity to hear from several different departments, as well as experience a one-on-one shadow with the department of their choice. We are excited to announce the Barbara Newsome Internship Award for Sociology Undergraduate Majors! The purpose of the Barbara Newsome Internship Award is to provide financial support for Sociology undergraduates to engage in internships in the community related to their major. Recipients of the award will be students in good standing, majoring in Sociology in the CLA at the University of Minnesota. Selection criteria will be based on academic promise and/ or demonstrated need. The award provides a $1600 stipend for a minimum of 135 internship hours. Visit : for more information!

The Center for Health Equity and the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute launched the request for applications (RFA) for our Undergraduate Research Program. The RFA is attached and more information and link to the program are included below. Undergraduate Research Program (URP) programs-opportunities/undergraduateresearchprogram Applicants must be University of Minnesota - Twin Cities undergraduate students who are from an under-represented population. Stipend ~ $424/week for a full-time weeks between June 1st, 2013 and August 30th, 2013 with a competitive option to continue paid research during the academic year. Funding for travel to present at a scientific conference for outstanding projects. Application due by noon on Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 Up to ten students will be selected All University of Minnesota Undergraduate students are eligible regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
