2 Fulford Dorm It is with great pride and excitement that Fulford Academy announces the opening of the Fulford Dorm our new residence facility. This is a monumental move forward for Fulford Academy, allowing the School to manage our growing student population and allowing all of our students to be at home in the same boarding facility. Now all Fulford Academy students will live in the recently renovated residence at the Thousands Island Village, a five minute ride from Fulford Academy School House facility, where all classes will take place. Our Residential Life experience for the students will be better than ever before, with the addition of larger, modern bedrooms, several common areas, quiet spaces for studying, a student café plus a large double gymnasium, full-sized athletic field, and outdoor tennis and basketball courts.

3 Fulford English Only Policy At Fulford Academy we pride ourselves on teaching English and seeing our students make great strides every term in their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This is largely due to our English Only Policy which we carry into our residences. We find single and double rooms counter-culture to students practicing English. Our rooms at the Fulford Dorm are spacious fours, allowing for much more interaction among students and encouraging our students to truly become more intercultural. Since the Fulford Dorm is each student s Home Away From Home, we allow our students to decorate their rooms with personal bedding, pictures, plants, study lamps and pillows; truly making it their own space. We provide each student with a twin size bed, desk, and a secured tall dresser as well as a closet.

4 Our Commitment to our Students The international boarding experience is a fundamental aspect of the student experience at Fulford Academy. In our small, safe and caring community, our Residential Life Program is structured to be a social and interactive engagement, preparing students to be both academically and socially successful in a North American Boarding School environment. Our commitment to our students is to nurture and challenge our students to reach their full potential with the intention of embracing our 3 core values of Courage, Respect and Wisdom: Courage: The cultural activities and excursions offered in our Residential Life Program are designed to offer students the opportunity to experience something new and perhaps allow them to step out of their comfort zone. Engaging in activities that they have never done before, students develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and independence. Respect: Our English-only environment continues beyond the classroom doors and into our residences. Through a thoughtful room-placing strategy, we aim to pair students with those from other countries in an attempt to mix cultures and cultivate friendships amongst all students. Living with students who have different cultural norms and values will provide our students with the opportunity to learn and develop a new found respect for each other, preparing them to be successful with us and in all of their future endeavors. Wisdom: We prepare our students to excel in the next phase of their education by teaching them how to meet the challenges and grasp the opportunities that come with community living. Our Residential Life Program takes full advantage of providing students the opportunity to enhance their English and lifestyle skills through socialization and engagement in local community activities and initiatives making every single moment a teachable one!

5 Residential Advisors Our Residential Advisors (RA s) have the important role of teaching the students outside of the classroom. The lessons that they impart to the students are no less important than learning classroom subjects. Our residence staff form a close team who work with a shared passion and common purpose, to ensure the full social development of each student. Night Staff There will be supervisory staff on duty all hours of the night at our new residence building. The primary duty of our night staff is to oversee the students physical and emotional wellbeing while they are not in class. These staff members act as caring parents, providing not only physical care, but emotional support as well.

7 Student Life Boarding Schools focus on educating the whole student which means the development of the student from many different aspects both inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to our excellent Academic Program and Residential Life Program, our Student Life Program ensures that students are having fun while continuing to develop their English and leadership skills. They are totally engaged in both cultural and intercultural events through sports, activities, clubs and workshops. Athletics In our commitment to student educational and developmental success, the sports program at Fulford Academy is designed to reflect our 3 core values and allows students to participate in a different kind of learning environment. Our athletic program builds and reinforces personal character traits such as independence, teamwork, time management, commitment, competitiveness and honesty just to name a few. In addition to the different sporting activities offered at Fulford Academy, we consider specialized options in the local community. New Double Gymnasium!

8 CO-CURRICULAR WEEKDAY ACTIVITIES Sunday to Thursday Supervised Study Hall from 7:15 to 9:15 PM in a classroom with a teacher. *If students need to continue with curriculum from their own school, and with the help and support from their teacher chaperone, we can also work that into this time period. Monday Dorm Meetings: This is an interactive activity where students are taught a specific subject and then the students (in groups) will do a presentation (in multi format skits, PowerPoint presentations, etc.), to ensure that they have grasped the subject matter of the Dorm Meeting. Subjects* may include: Rules & Regulations/Expectations Culture Shock Homesickness Canadian Culture Anti-Bullying Boarding School Culture Leadership Time Management Study Skills *specific topics are subject to change Tuesdays Fulford Olympics: In our Fulford Olympic Games students participate in sports activities, concentration games, team work and fun activities with the focus on Harry Potter House style competitions. Wednesdays Workshops: Workshop Wednesdays are fun and interactive workshops designed to help a student enhance their personal skills and prepare for their future educational paths. We help students develop the skills needed to prepare for future educational paths. Our Workshops include (but not limited to): Application Process (for both boarding schools and University) Goal Setting Interview and Presentation Preparation Lifestyle Skills Fridays Free Night: is an opportunity for students (in pairs or groups) to go downtown or mid-town to take advantage of the many restaurants and coffee shops, shopping or going to the movies. There are also many games and activities for those student who simply wish hang out (with supervision) in the dorm or spontaneous game of basketball, volleyball or indoor soccer.

10 WEEKEND ACTIVITIES We plan our weekends to be full of great excursions and activities so that there is something for every student. Each weekend schedule provides both a mandatory activity and an optional activity for each student to participate in. Students have a variety of choices of trips and activities to choose from each and every week. The outings range from educational outings to those that are pure fun. There are both mandatory trips for all to enjoy and optional trips that may be selected. Our weekend activities give students the opportunity to interact with each other, improving their communications and social skills. If students choose to remain at the school, there are always planned activities such as sports, games or conversation groups that keep them busy and engaged with each other. Our students are never left with nothing to do, and they always have the opportunity to socialize and to practice their English.
