3 To Be Challenged North Cedar Academy (NCA) is a dual enrollment private high school situated on ninety-six acres along the Flambeau River in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. NCA offers motivated and committed American and International students in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to graduate from high school with an Associate in Arts (AA) degree from the University of Wisconsin Colleges (UWC) and high school diploma simultaneously. The NCA model allows a student to obtain a Bachelor degree within two years of high school graduation, and a Master degree within four years. All NCA graduates who have successfully completed the AA degree are guaranteed admission into a UW system school to complete their Bachelor degree. The world s 27th top university, UW-Madison, is the flagship campus of UW. College credits that NCA students earn are generally also transferable to other colleges and universities. High standards are communicated during the application process, as NCA engages students in rigorous, in-depth academic work requiring intellectual inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking. While NCA is best suited for students who seek the challenge of rigorous curricula and college-level study, the NCA model is equally focused on developing outstanding young men and women committed to personal excellence, community involvement and global awareness. 4 To Be Engaged Even though a student can enroll in NCA for just a single year to take advantage of the innovative learning environment and curriculum, the full NCA schedule is achieved in two stages: Prep Academy Grades 9 & 10 Beginning in the 9th grade, and accelerating in the 10th grade, students are intensively fortified for success in dual enrollment courses. Students are given a Post-Secondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) to adequately assess the student s academic skills in mathematics, reading and writing through the delivery of three tests, one for each of these areas. The results of these tests are used to determine placement into appropriate college level courses. An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is developed for each student to track and monitor individual student outcomes and progress. This plan serves as the roadmap to student progress and success. The ILP includes the following essential components: 1) Individual Graduation Plan, 2) Personal Goals Statement, 3) Foundational Skills Assessment and Growth, 4) Social/Personal Needs Intervention Plan, 5) Career Interests Inventory, and (6) Individual Postsecondary Transition Plan. 4 Collegiate Academy Grades 11 & 12 Due to its size and location, NCA can focus on rigor, relationships and relevance drawn from college resources. Critical thinking is embedded in the curriculum, enabling students to assess their own thinking in a cognitive way. NCA students are enrolled in a broad range of dual-credit college classes to satisfy high school diploma and AA requirements. Additional instructional time is offered to students in the areas of employability skills, career and college readiness, and post-secondary options based on each student s ILP. Students develop requisite skills for post-secondary success while they develop career portfolios using career planning and preparation software. A college advisor with experience in college preparation and evaluation advisement works closely with each student to help prepare for a successful post-secondary transition.

6 To visit new places The NCA experience includes a significant time exploring and learning off campus. To compliment a full calendar of activities in the local area, regular field trips take students to regional cities, universities, attractions and events. These trips can include historical and geological landmarks, museums, sporting events, shopping excursions and amusement parks. 6

NCA students can earn an Associate of Arts & Sciences degree from the University of Wisconsin along with a high school diploma. northcedar.net Through an exclusive partnership, 11th and 12th grade students at NCA are enrolled concurrently in NCA and University of Wisconsin Colleges (UWC). All core courses in these grades are UWC curriculum, taught by UWC professors, and receive both high school credit and university credit. This is a really exciting program where students can both earn an excellent high school education as well as a University of Wisconsin Associate s Degree. Dean Yonhke, Dean and Campus Executive Officer, UW-Barron County UWSystem Transferability The UW System has developed an Undergraduate Transfer Policy that strives to assure that students transferring between UW System institutions are treated fairly when changing colleges. Among its provisions are policies stating that a General Education requirement at one University of Wisconsin institution be honored at the transfer institution and that the Associate of Arts and Sciences degree (AAS) granted by the UW Colleges meets the institutionwide General Education requirements of a University of Wisconsin Bachelor s degree. 7

8 To make lifelong friends NCA Residence Hall As a boarding student, your dorm is more than just a place to study and sleep. It s your home away from home, a place to hang out, play foosball or video games, watch television, sit around the bonfire, or just have fun. The dormitory is a uniquely designed five story building overlooking the Flambeau River. Each floor is divided into girls and boys wings, with common areas in between for hanging out or studying. The dorm is fully supervised with a resident director s apartment and office on the main level, and resident assistants living on each wing of each floor. Dorm rooms are designed for 2 students, with shared bath facilities on each floor of each wing. Included in the dorm is a laundry facility, study room, kitchenette, and mailbox for each student. 9 For success in life! At North Cedar, you live a life of scholarship, enrichment, service, and yes, fun. You live among friends, learning the value of personal achievement, of group dynamics, of service to others, and of the wonderful benefits of expanding your boundaries and trying new things. As a graduate, you will move on to greater challenges with the necessary skills sets to take on your future with confidence. Personal Development Leadership All students are encouraged to take the lead in a variety of endeavors throughout their time at NCA. Faculty and staff will guide you as you to take on greater responsibility in leadership such as a study group, course project, community program, recreational outing, or field trip. Community Giving Service projects and initiatives will be a regular part of your weekly schedule. Projects on campus and in the broader community can be initiated by groups and individuals as initiatives to enhance campus life and community well-being. Enrichment NCA and local education partners have a wide range of activities ready for student participation. These include clubs, field trips and club sports. 11 NCA Campus Safety NCA sits at the edge of the City of Ladysmith in Rusk County, WI. Rusk County is a beautiful and rural county and boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Wisconsin as well as the nation. The safety of the students and staff at NCA is of utmost concern. Regardless of the low crime rates in the area, we adhere to strict policies regarding student activities, dorm admittance and outside visitors. City of Ladysmith Cultural arts, music, and dance concerts are offered yeararound in the Ladysmith area. Nearly every weekend features a local fair or celebration. Ladysmith s Northland Mardi Gras is a popular feature in July with the unique and spectacular Venetian night parade on the Flambeau River. Wisconsin Northwoods Since the time of the great forests, when Rusk County was just starting to grow, this area has been one of the most beautiful in the state. With the coming of the lumber barons many small communities grew and then died when the logging industry dwindled. 12 NCA History NCA is the progression of an educational institution that opened in 1962 as a four-year private college. After four decades serving the educational needs of the Rusk County area, the college closed its doors in After witnessing the void that was left from the college s closure, a group of investors with local roots purchased the campus with the intent to continue providing educational excellence through a private college preparatory school and regional learning center. This program was launched in fall The first stage of the new school s formation was the establishment of an innovative public/private partnership with Ladysmith School District that resulted in the Ladysmith International Student Program.
