As a private, nonprofit, independent institution of higher learning, NYIT embraces an educational philosophy of providing a career-oriented professional education to all qualified students and supports applications-oriented research. The Vocational Independence Program at NYIT s Central Islip site is one example of the university s continued commitment to the community at large. For more information, visit

V.I.P. s Unique Program Structure V.I.P. Curriculum Description The Vocational Independence Program offers a diverse, dynamic curriculum geared toward individual student success. With a goal of helping each student maximize his or her potential for independence, the classroom experience reflects the needs of each student. The academic content of the curriculum provides students with a background in subjects that augment their daily socializing and communication. For example, an awareness of current events and social issues helps to enable communication. During their freshman year, students take classes that help them adjust to the collegiate experience, such as study skills and managing a personal budget, along with core courses in content areas such as critical thinking, social psychology, computers, and current events. Class work and homework have an experiential focus, in keeping with state-of-the-art educational research. Students do much of their learning outside the classroom as part of the larger NYIT community. Field trips to surrounding areas of historically and environmentally rich Long Island, as well as New York City, provide additional learning opportunities. Each student meets regularly with an advisor for one-to-one academic assistance, and a computer lab study hall is open nightly to provide support. and administration, observe classes, talk with students, and tour the campus. The formal application includes a parent application, references, school records, and psychological/intelligence testing results. The student application is completed during a required on-campus admissions interview. SAT or ACT tests are not required, but are recommended for admission to the Track II portion of the program. Visiting V.I.P. By Public Transportation: NYIT s Central Islip site is a 20-minute walk south of the Central Islip Long Island Railroad (LIRR) station (Hicksville-Ronkonkoma branch). Suffolk County Bus Route 3C (Central Islip-Bay Shore) also runs near the campus. MacArthur Airport, providing daily commercial air service to major U.S. cities, is a 10-minute drive from campus. By Automobile: From the west: Take Southern State Parkway to exit 43A. Turn right at the traffic light onto Carleton Avenue. Continue north to the campus, which will be on the right. If approaching from the Long Island Expressway, take Exit 56, turn right onto New York Route 111 south, bear left onto Wheeler Road (Country Road 17). Continue south 2.5 Assessment of specific independent living skills is ongoing so that teachers and counselors can identify 2 11

Student Population NYIT s Vocational Independence Program admits students of any race, creed, age, sex, color, and national or ethnic origin. V.I.P. students must be at least 18 years of age. There may be mitigating circumstances in which students who have not completed a secondary program are considered for admission. V.I.P. students generally have specific learning disabilities and have received special education services in high school. Reading levels range from third grade to above 12th grade. Many of our Track II students have pervasive developmental disorders such as Asperger s Syndrome and high-functioning autism. The track system, which V.I.P. uses, allows for a wide spectrum of abilities. Participants in the program must be able to fit comfortably into the NYIT environment and demonstrate the ability and desire for employment. In addition, students are screened for emotional needs to ensure that the V.I.P. program is able to support them. Admissions V.I.P. accepts a freshman class of approximately 40 to 50 students from around the world. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, and it is recommended that students apply as early in the school year as possible since space is limited. Those considering applying are encouraged to visit the campus with their parents prior to formally applying. These individual visits provide applicants with the opportunity to meet with the faculty individual needs as they emerge in the course of daily activities. Students needing special attention are assigned an independent living counselor, who helps devise special strategies to assist the student and coordinates efforts with other V.I.P. academic, social, and vocational staff members. The vocational component of V.I.P. stresses a cooperative educational approach that utilizes the resources of NYIT and the community. VIP freshmen use class time to explore different avenues of independence in conjunction with their vocational training, and instructors help them discover and maximize their personal strengths. Students are exposed to various career options which include the fields of retail, childcare, eldercare, food service, clerical, and hospitality, and participate in workshops, lectures and work site visits. Input from social, academic, and vocational counselors play an integral role in helping the student formulate a realistic understanding of the requirements and potential of each vocational area. This experience and counseling, coupled with vocational testing and observations by the vocational staff, enable each student to choose a vocational major by the end of the first semester. During their second semester, students begin intensive skills training in their vocational field and have a limited work experience. The students interact with vocational counselors and job coaches who provide on-site supervision on an as-needed or ongoing basis. The curriculum also includes training in interviewing skills; resume writing, understanding of benefits, and job search techniques. Taught 10 3

by professionals in their respective fields, this part of the program gives each student the opportunity to master basic skills in their chosen career. In their second year, students continue skills training while working in an internship. During the third year, they are assigned to a work placement, generally three days a week, while continuing to receive guidance and training through vocational coursework and counseling. During their sophomore year, V.I.P. students build on their experiences from freshman year. Classroom experiences help them develop the skills essential to succeed in their vocational area of interest. Classes continue to provide the vital structure inherent in a college environment. V.I.P. courses are fully integrated with the school s social environment, helping students develop group cooperation and communication skills. As teams, students tackle large projects such as organizing and running an actual college fair or publishing a newsletter. Sophomores also hone specific communications skills within classes designed particularly for that purpose. All classes are taught in a technology-rich environment, with tools that foster learning such as computers, Smart Boards, and digital video. In junior year, the curriculum s primary focus is the specifics of living independently. Food and nutrition, budgeting, and apartment living are all major topics. Junior dormitory living spaces more V.I.P. students live in Ambassador Hall, a four-story dormitory with a large student lounge, exercise room, and laundry facility. It is conveniently located within a short walking distance of the Student Activity Center, athletic fields, and the Culinary Arts Center, where students eat their meals. The V.I.P. residential faculty consists of professionals who also live in Ambassador Hall. They are on duty every evening starting at 5 p.m. and throughout the weekend. V.I.P. students have successfully assimilated into many NYIT activities, joined a variety of clubs and organizations, and entered intramural sports competitions. In addition to regular campus activities that take place on the weekends, the V.I.P. residential staff schedules off-site activities that make use of the program s transportation system. During part of their junior year, V.I.P. students live in Leadership Hall, located across from Ambassador Hall. With six kitchens and several suites, this residential experience provides an excellent transition to independent living. And many students do their own food shopping and cooking under the supervision of the teaching staff. 4 9

Junior Year Professional Development Health Fall - Practical Health Related Issues Spring - Illness and Death Foods Practicum Apartment Living Law Fall - Civil Law Spring - Criminal Law Work Experience Transition Program The Vocational Program The following organizations have worked closely with V.I.P.: Childcare Council of Suffolk County, NYIT Culinary Arts Center, Marriot Corporation, ADP Corporation, Waldbaum s, TJ Maxx, and Suffolk County BOCES Campus Life V.I.P. is located on NYIT s beautiful 600-acre Central Islip site, which has 24-hour security. The facilities include tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course and clubhouse, a gourmet restaurant that is part of NYIT s Culinary Arts Center, athletic fields, library, and a medical facility. The Student Activity Center houses a swimming pool, gymnasium, and two fitness centers. In Independence Hall, students can enjoy live music, karaoke nights and more at the Coffee Cellar, a studentoperated coffee house. closely models independent living in an apartment with roommates, and class projects reflect the needs and challenges of this lifestyle. The last portion of spring semester is spent entirely in hands-on workshops geared toward specific topics that students will face when they make the step to be fully independent. From interview techniques to dressing for success, students have the opportunity to dry-run many of the challenges they will face, all with the support and guidance of advisors. In all cases, students move at their own pace with ample feedback from faculty and staff who are intimately involved with their progress. Track II Credit Coursework While at V.I.P. Some V.I.P. students are identified as having the academic, social, and organizational readiness to take credit courses as a supplement to their V.I.P. experience. Such students have achieved a score of no less than 850 on the SAT or 18 on the ACT. After demonstrating success in the V.I.P. program, these students may choose to register for classes, starting in the spring semester of their freshman year or the fall of their sophomore year. It is important to note that for the purposes of determining placement, V.I.P. class standing is determined by the date of VIP entrance, not by class standing at a previous school. Students taking credit courses travel to NYIT s Old Westbury campus, and still have a vocational placement while at V.I.P. Credit classes are scheduled to replace V.I.P. course content that the student has already mastered. When a 8 5

V.I.P. student is identified as being a credit course candidate, he or she meets with the V.I.P. credit course coordinator and an academic advisor to select credit courses that best suit the student s academic plan. VIP students taking credit courses are encouraged to utilize all of the many facilities NYIT offers to support individuals with learning disabilities, such as the NYIT Learning Center and the Counseling and Wellness Center on the Old Westbury campus. These students are also provided with all of the support a typical V.I.P. student is afforded, such as academic counseling, V.I.P. study halls, and computer labs. Initial registration advisement is provided by V.I.P., and in the case of a student matriculated to a degree program, by NYIT as well. Students are typically advised to register for core courses that have a high probability of transfer to another program upon completion. Students registered for core course take preparatory classes such as Reading Strategies, Pre-College English, and Literature. V.I.P. does not, however, provide tutors for credit classes, although students procuring their own tutors are free to meet with them at V.I.P. facilities. While it is unlikely that a V.I.P. student would complete a degree during the course of the program, a student who brings a considerable transcript of completed work from another college could do so. V.I.P. works with the NYIT Office of Admissions to have transcripts evaluated. Credit coursework supplements a V.I.P. student s overall program and can play an important part in preparing a V.I.P. student for the next step, whether purely vocational or as a means to transfer to another college or program.
