A2 Level 2 Audit time
Start Up Hello, dear apprentices. It s nice to see you again! I just had a meeting with Jane McLean. She was doing an audit (n) to my consulting firm. Now, I have to report the meeting to Julie and you will have the chance to learn about reported speech and phrasal verbs. Let s go! Hi, Stacey! Hi, Anthony! How did the audit go? I had a great interview with Jane McLean. She asked many things about the Consulting Association Group (CAG). Tell me! Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
She asked me what CAG did. And what did you say? I told her that the CAG was designed as a company that provides support to companies that are likely to go bankrupt (adj) in order to give creative solutions to environmental problems. Then, she asked me how CAG found its clients. Oh, that is easy! You are right; I told her that we came across with our clients by databases and analysis made by our financial team. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
What else did she ask? She wanted to know about our Green Management Program. I told her that it was a program designed for the implementation of new technologies, which involves new strategies to save money and help the environment at the same time. Then, she asked me how CAG found its clients. Did she ask about our CAG-News? Of course! She asked what exactly the CAG-News was. I simply said that it was a free publication that showed achievements and experiences from our clients. I also told her that we worked under the American Consulting Guidelines and that we signed a confidentiality (n) agreement (n) with all our clients. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
Did you mention all the services we provide, apart from the Green Management Program? Sure! I told her that we also offered help in terms of business development, clients contact and marketing design. Wow! You did great in the audit. Thank you, Stacey. Miss McLean said she was going to send us an with a report. Then, we have to wait. You are right, Stacey. Now, let s see what you learned about the CAG. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. 6 Let s Get inside Oh, I have a new . It is the report from Jane McLean. Let s open it. Mister Wattford. I write to you to hand in the report I talked about during our meeting. I can tell that your company fulfills all the requirements and policies established for a consulting corporation. I found out that you really follow all the recommendations given by the American Consulting Guidelines. However, you should implement some strategies that may help you with your tasks. I have listed some recommendations you have to set up in order to improve and catch up with the new policies that will rule next year. 1. Hire a professional accountant 2. Make sure that all employees have an identity card 3. Don t buy anymore desks, the ones you have are not broken down. On the other hand, I understand you called off the meeting we scheduled for next week. Please call me back to arrange a new one, except for Tuesday because I won t be able to make it that day. Once again, thank you for your time. Jane McLean Audit Firm Group Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
Let s analyze Stacey, I just received the from Miss McLean. And what did she say? She suggested us to make some changes in the company due to new policies that will be implemented next year. Great! Now, let s take a look at the grammar. In this section, we are going to talk about reported speech and phrasal verbs. Click on the topic button to get explanations and useful examples. Reported speech Phrasal verbs Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
Let s analyze Now we are going to talk about reported speech. Click on the Example button to see a graphic explanation. Example Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
Let s analyze When you tell others what someone has told you using the exact words it is called reported speech (BBC, 2013a; British Council, 2013). When you use reported speech you use the same words but you take the verb one tense back in the timeline. You will have to use past simple to report something that was said using present simple When the person speaks using present perfect tense, you have to use the past perfect tense to report it. When the direct speech is in past simple you will have to use past perfect to report it to someone else. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
Let s analyze Finally, when a person uses future tense in the direct speech, you will have to use would instead of will to report it. On the other hand, when you have to report a command you have to use the same verb with the particle to. In the case of a negative command, you will have to add not before the infinitive verb. Now, let s talk about phrasal verbs. These are verbs that can be combined with prepositions to form a new verb with a different meaning. In this material, we have seen some of them. Let s analyze them! Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
Let s analyze I write to you to hand in the report I talked about during our meeting. In this case, hand in means to deliver something. I found out that you follow all the recommendations given by the American Ethics Guideline. When you use find out, you mean that you discover something I have to call off the meeting we scheduled for next week. 1:00 2:00 When you call off something it means that you are cancelling. It usually refers to events, meetings or appointments. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /25
