A2 level 2 Looking for a business partner
Start up Hi there, welcome back! I m glad to join you through this new learning material where we ll check some vocabulary and adjectives related to academic and work environments. We are going to make a short review about tag questions and how the intonation is when asking them. Let ś explore this together! Warm up I am excited because I have already the university. However, the money I receive is not enough to cover all my expenses, so I thought I could open my own business. Professor Brown, who teaches Business Administration at my university, is giving me some advice regarding my project and, additionally, he s helping me to find a competent and reliable partner that has money to invest. He should have gotten somebody by now, shouldn t he? Let s see... Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /8
Warm up Anthony: Good morning, Professor Brown. I was wondering if you have already found a partner for me. Prof. Brown: Good morning, Anthony. Actually, I have the perfect person for you... Her name is Stacy Howard, she is a student too. She is a very responsible girl, and I like that she is energetic. Anthony: Wonderful! I just hope she is ambitious, like me. Prof. Brown: Indeed, her grandfather left her some money and she is interested in investing in a very lucrative and green business model; she likes to take care of the environment too. Anthony: I think Stacy and I will be very good friends, won t we? Prof. Brown: I know you will. Two bright and hardworking students can surely get along, can t they? Anthony: Alright then. Prof. Brown: These are her contact details. So, write them down, could you? Anthony: Thank you, Professor. I ll write to her right away. Bye! Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. 4 Warm up Anthony: Hi, Stacy! I m Anthony. It s a pleasure to finally meet you. I ve heard great things about you. I hope you like my business project. Stacy: Hello, Anthony... Yes, I do. And I have some ideas that you might like as well. Anthony: Very good! I see that you are definitely efficient and cooperative. Stacy: That s because I think we should start as soon as possible, shouldn t we? Anthony: Of course. What do you think if we grab a cup of coffee and talk more about it? Stacy: Sure! There is a new coffee shop nearby, let s go! Anthony: Alright then. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /8
Let s get inside Let s get inside Dear apprentices! My friend Anthony and I are very interested in owning a business and we thought about buying a franchise. Anthony just sent me an about our conversation from yesterday. Open the and check some words that can be useful for our vocabulary. God morning, Stacy. I really liked the coffee shop where we were yesterday and I think we should go some other time, shouldn t we? I m so glad to find a very helpful partner like you, with your collaboration we will make this business very appealing for people, and that way it will also be profitable for us and our needs. By the way, we will have a meeting tomorrow, won t we? Let me know. I ll speak to you later cause I have to go to my classes now! Big hug... Anthony Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. 6 Let s analyze Let s analyze Stacy: Is good that we have learnt lots of adjectives and useful words so far! Anthony: But Stacy, remember that we talked about this subject in a previous material. So, what we are going to do is to explain to you how to use question tags with modal verbs. Let s see! Remember that the modals verbs are: could, would, should, must, can and will. And, if a question tag has one of these modal verbs in the main part of the sentence, the question tag uses the same modal verb. Examples They couldn t hear me, could they? You won t tell anyone, will you? We should go some other time to the coffee shop, shouldn t we? These are her contact details. So, write it down, could you? Stacy and I will be very good friends, won t we? Two bright and hardworking students can surely get along, can t they? Anthony s new partner must have money to invest, musn t she? Stacy and Anthony would be very responsible, wouldn t they? Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /8
Let s talk Let s talk INTONATION Question tags can be used to find out information we don t know or confirm information we have a clue about. If he question tag is used to find out information we don t know; then, we use rising intonation. Our tone of voice rises. Two bright and hardworking students can surely get along, can t they? If a question tag is used to find out information that we have a clue about; then, we use falling intonation. Our tone of voice falls. Two bright and hardworking students can surely get along, can t they? It is possible that an affirmative statement is followed by an affirmative tag for even more effect (sarcasm, anger, disbelief, shock, concern etc.). You think you re funny do you?
