Warm-up Welcome! Welcome, dear apprentices! I am Tim and I am your guide for this learning material. This material includes useful information about the following topics: School subjects Gerunds for likes and dislikes and leisure time activities Frequency adverbs Linking words and connectors of sequence Let s write together an to my friend Abby, who is abroad. Warm-up From: To: Subject: A little bit about my routine. Hello, dear Abby! How are you? I hope everything is fine with you and your family. First, I want to tell you that I am very busy with my school activities, but that s OK because I love learning new things every day. In this , I want to tell you about my daily routine. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

Warm-up I wake up early in the morning and take a shower. Then, at 6:00 am, I have breakfast and brush my teeth. Next, I put on my clothes and go to school. The school bus always leaves us in front of our school. In the classroom, the teachers always explain the topics and they often give us homework. After a few hours of class, we have a break. My friends and I enjoy this time because we sit together and eat our snacks. Then, the bell rings and I go back to my school duties. I spend six hours a day at school. The subjects that I study are Math, Science, P.E., History, English, Literature, Geography, Chemistry, Music, Geometry, Ethics and Social Studies. My favorite subject is Math, but I don t like History. Finally, the bell rings and my classes are over. I put my things in my backpack, organize my desk and go home. When I get home, I eat lunch and do my homework. Sometimes, I hang out with my friends or play videogames in the afternoon. Later, in the evening, I have dinner and go to bed. On the weekends, I always wake up late and I usually have breakfast at 10:00 am. Then, I go to the beach. Later, I have lunch and surf on the Internet or listen to music. In the afternoon, I like hanging out with my friends, playing a musical instrument, staying home, reading a book or playing videogames. I love playing the drums and I also like getting together with my friends to have fun. Occasionally, I enjoy going to concerts, skateboarding, or playing baseball. I never go to parties because I am too young. As you can read, I like to be busy even on weekends. Finally, I want to know about your daily routine and leisure time activities. Can you tell me about them when you write back? Best wishes, Tim Robinson Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

Let s analyze Let s analyze Now, let s study some important concepts. SCHOOL SUBJECTS All right, my friends. Now, let s talk about the school subjects. When we go to school or university, we usually study different subjects. Sometimes, we can choose these according to our preferences but that s not always the case. Let me tell you about the subjects I study at school. Monday English Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday P.E Ethics Ethics Literature Literature Science Break Break Break Break Break Math Social studies History Geography Music Note: Math is the short form for mathematics. P.E. is the short form for Physical Education. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

GERUNDS FOR LIKES AND DISLIKES Some of the highlighted words in the message we wrote to Abby are gerunds. Let s remember some: I like hanging out with my friends I enjoy going to concerts To form a gerund you must add ing at the end of verbs. For example: I like playing the guitar Remember that we also use the -ing ending for verbs in progressive actions, but their meaning is different: Playing video She is playing games is fun video games We can use gerunds to express likes and dislikes: Likes I like watching movies. I like playing soccer. I love sleeping. Dislikes I don t like reading poetry. I hate cooking. I don t like waking up early. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

Frequency adverbs In the message we wrote to Abby, we also used some frequency adverbs. Let s remember some: I always wake up late. I usually have breakfast at 10:00 am. Sometimes, I hang out with my friends. The teachers always explain the topics. Occasionally, I enjoy going to concerts. I never go to parties. Always, usually, often, sometimes, occasionally, rarely, seldom, and never are adverbs of frequency. We use them to say how frequent we do our daily routine and leisure time activities. The following graph shows the percent of probability frequency adverbs express: Always Usually, Frequently Often Sometimes, Occasionally Rarely, seldom Never Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

The position of the adverbs of frequency is usually before the main verb. Rule: Subject Adverb Main verb Complement Mary always gets up at 7 am. I usually have breakfast at home. He never goes to the gym. When using any form of the verb to be (is, are, am,) the adverb is placed after the verb. Exception: Subject Verb Adverb Complement Thomas is always early. He is never in the office. Remember that some adverbs, such as usually, sometimes, occasionally and often can go at the beginning of a sentence. For example: Sometimes, I go to the movies. In information questions it is common to use How often: How often do you play video games? I sometimes play video games on weekends. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

In yes/no questions the adverbs of frequency go before the main verb. Do you sometimes play video games? Yes, I sometimes play video games on weekends. Linking words and connectors of sequence Now, let s learn about linking words and connectors of sequence. Linking words Linking words are used to join ideas or sentences. These are some: But Use but to show contrast between ideas or sentences. For example, My favorite subject is Math, but I don t like History. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

AND Use and to express addition. For example, I wake up early in the morning and take a shower. Or Use or to join alternatives. For example, I hang out with my friends or play videogames in the afternoon. Because Use because to show the reason why something happens. For example, I love school because I can learn new things every day. Connectors of sequence Connectors of sequence are words that you use when you write or speak to show the order in which things happen. Let s see how they work: First Then/Next/After Later Before Finally Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

Let s get inside First When I wake up in the morning, I first take a shower. Then Then, I put on my clothes. Later Later, I have breakfast. Before I brush my teeth before I go to school. Finally Finally, I go to school. Let s listen to Laura and Arturo, two of my classmates, talking about school. Arturo: Hi, I think we are in the same class. My name is Arturo. Laura: Hello, I am Laura. Arturo: Are you new in this school? Laura: Yes, this is my first year in this school. Arturo: And what do you think about this school? Laura: Everything is ok except for Math. Arturo: Are you serious? Laura: For me, Math is so boring. I always fail the tests. I prefer Science. What about you? Do you like Math? Arturo: Well to be honest, I am good at Math. Laura: Well, maybe you can help me with my homework. Arturo: Sure, no problem. I usually study Math with some classmates. We always meet at the library in the afternoons. You can join us if you want. Laura: That is perfect! Thank you so much. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje - SENA. Reservados todos los derechos /11

Time Management. You see, if you don t supervise your time, you will be serving it rather than making it serve you and your purposes. Time Management I once purchased a course on time management but never had time to take it. Actually, more correctly, I never was able to make time for it because I was so unorganized.
