During my visit I ll discuss my eating and exercising habits so, at the end of this session, you will be able to: Use vocabulary related to health Talk about eating habits using determiners Warm-up Help me identifying healthy and unhealthy food and habits. 3 Let s get inside It s time for my fitness diagnosis. personal Trainer: Mister Jagger? Steven Jagger: That would be me! Personal Trainer: Welcome to our gym! Today, I will ask you some questions about your lifestyle and I ll test your physical condition. Steven Jagger: Ok but I must warn you, I m completely out of shape! Personal Trainer: Tell me, when was your last medical appointment? Steven Jagger: Besides the one I had for the gym, I had an appointment 3 or 4 years ago. Personal Trainer: Do you have any backaches or chest pain? Steven Jagger: Yes, I have backaches; they are more frequent than before. I don t have any chest pain. Personal Trainer: What about stomachaches? Steven Jagger: Only when I don t have lunch at regular times or I eat spicy food. The problem is that now I eat more spicy food than ever. Personal Trainer: What do you usually eat in your meals? Steven Jagger: I usually have a cup of black coffee and a piece of cake, or some cookies for breakfast. I usually eat a lot of Italian or Indian food for lunch. I think Indian food is better than Italian food but I eat both. Oh! And I also eat Mexican and Thai food. 4 Personal Trainer: Do you exercise, Mr. Jagger? Steven Jagger: No, doctor. I used to be very active, but now I work less. Personal Trainer: Do you smoke or drink alcohol? Steven Jagger:I smoke some cigarettes a day, and I drink some beers a week. Personal Trainer: Wow! It seems like we have a lot of work to do! Steven Jagger: I ll do whatever you tell me to do. These words are determiners and you use them when talking about the amount of objects. I will ask you some questions. I had an appointment. I have a cup of coffee. I have some cookies. That s right! Determiners are words placed before nouns or noun phrases to indicate if they are general or specific. In the case of a and an, they tell us the noun is singular. A cup of coffee = 1 cup of coffee An appointment = 1 appointment Remember that a and an mean 1 but you use A when the noun starts with a consonant sound; for example: a Thai restaurant, a Mexican dish An when the noun starts with a vowel sound; for example: an appointment In the case of some it gives the amount of nouns referred to.
