We don t have a uniform here at Macclesfield College, however some courses do require a specific uniform to mirror industry standards, but you will be advised about this by your course teacher. We recommend dressing appropriately for a learning environment in line with our Student Code of Conduct. Personal Support All students at Macclesfield College benefit from the support of a Personal Tutor. They will work with you to produce an Individual Learning Plan and monitor your learning goals, attendance, progress and general wellbeing. 16 THERIGHT QUALIFICATION FORYOU Understanding the options available to you after finishing your GCSEs The following information will help you decide on the best choices to meet your abilities, style of learning and individual goals whether you re looking to progress to further study, gain the skills and knowledge required for a specific career path, or advance onto Higher Education. Staying in education When you finish Year 11 in the summer you are required to stay in some form of education or training until your 18th birthday. There are big benefits to continuing in education or training, it will increase your skills and improve your future work prospects and earning potential. There are three options open to you: Full-time education Work-based learning, such as an Apprenticeship Part-time education or training for at least 1 day per week if you are employed, self-employed or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week (for at least 8 weeks) If you d like to try a variety of options, or you ve achieved no formal qualifications our VINE and ASPIRE qualifications allow you to balance study with work experience. These courses will also help to develop numeracy, literacy, ICT, social and personal skills. VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS At Macclesfield College our specialist vocational qualifications will give you the practical skills and work-related knowledge to help you progress. National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) These qualifications give students the specific skills they need to work in particular industries, such as Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VTCT), Professional Cookery and Hospitality. They are studied in our specialist, industry-standard learning environments. Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) qualifications These qualifications are undertaken by students in our specialist Automotive training facility. 16

17 BTECs/UALs These work-related qualifications are recognised by employers and universities and provide practical, realworld learning along with a theoretical background to give students the knowledge, skills and understanding they require for their chosen career paths. With BTECs you choose one subject area to study. The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and carries UCAS points, allowing progression to Higher Education programmes at College or University. Specialist Creative Skills Visual and Performing Arts students undertake the equivalent University of Arts London (UAL) qualifications, which has produced some of the worlds leading artists. What else will I study on the Tech Bacc programme? Apart from your main BTEC specialism, you will also take: a core Maths qualification to take your numeracy skills well beyond GCSE and an accredited Project Qualification where you will be linked to an employer and carry out a work-based research project. There will also be the opportunity to complete high quality work experience. What are the entry requirements for the TechBacc? You will need at least three B grades and two C grades from your GCSEs, including GCSE English Language and Maths at C or above. THE TECHBACC PROGRAMME The TechBacc (Technical Bacculaureate) programme combines a major vocational component, based around the successful BTEC Level 3 Diploma courses with a Level 3 Maths qualification and an accredited project qualification to create a study programme designed to provide you with a head start in a range of technology-based careers. The qualification has been developed in response to feedback from employers and universities to provide the skills needed for future professionals in a wide range of technical careers. 20 YOURPERFECT STUDYPROGRAMME We want you to get the most out of your time as a student here at Macclesfield College so that you re fully equipped for your next step. That s why we ve developed three key elements to your full-time programme of study. Your study programme will feature: Your main qualification, such as a BTEC, which will be undertaken through practical work, project, assessments and assignments you will also attend regular tutorials to check your progress and clarify learning goals. No matter what your achievement in Maths and English, you will still be expected to engage in extending these skills at College and will form part of your programme no matter what you study. Work-related learning to help you prepare for the world of work learners may be involved in external work placements to gain real-world experience. Macclesfield College works closely with local and national employers to develop key employability skills to help our learners prepare for successful future employment. You ll also benefit from industry-related trips and visits from guest speakers. in the news Students say yes to Employment Readiness Students took advantage of a new initiative to help boost their career skills. 23 ENGLISHANDMATHS (GCSE) My GCSE English and Mathematics are essential requirements for employment and Higher Education. All full-time year old students study GCSE Maths or English, or both alongside their main programme of study, depending on their prior achievements. No matter what your previous achievement is, in English and Maths you will be expected to engage in extending these skills through directed study project. favourite thing about being a student at Macclesfield College is the friendly teaching atmosphere. The working relationship I have with my lecturer is brilliant, she s always around when I need help and that gives me the confidence to succeed. 28 APPRENTICESHIPS If you want to get a head start in your career then an Apprenticeship is the ideal way for you to gain industry experience which employers are looking for, whilst earning money something no other qualification type can offer. At Macclesfield College we offer a wide range of contemporary Apprenticeship programmes to meet the needs of employers both regionally and nationally. From Marketing and Human Resources, to Design Art-worker and Lab Technician, our Apprenticeship programmes reflect the increasing demand to have enthusiastic and dynamic young people in the workplace. When you study an Apprenticeship you will: Be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week Learn on and off the job (usually one day a week in college) Receive a nationally recognised qualification (e.g. NVQ/Diplomas including Technical Certificates) Earn a wage at the same time The length of your apprenticeship will depend on the job you re doing, your age and how much experience you have. Higher and Degree Apprenticeships With the increased emphasis on developing a skilled and sustainable workforce, Higher and Degree Apprenticeships combine the best of practical on-the-job training with higher level study - without the tuition fees. Our Higher and Degree level Apprenticeships are the perfect solution for students who want to get ahead in their chosen profession whilst gaining a university level qualification, without the hefty student debts. Apprenticeship vacancies To start on an apprenticeship, you will first need to apply for an apprenticeship vacancy with an employer and successfully go through their recruitment process to be offered a job. Macclesfield College works closely with many different local employers to train Apprentices and can help you to find a job. 42 foundation learning Foundation Learning courses are aimed at learners working at either Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2. Our Cross College and Foundation Learning courses provide education for students who would otherwise find studying in the traditional classroom setting challenging. All our courses normally last for 1 year and you will have an admissions interview to discuss your achievements to date before you start.
