1 French V - AP French French V and AP French are designed to build upon and improve reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills learned in previous levels of French. The AP French course, specifically, is the equivalent of a third year college course and is intended to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam given in May while promoting French fluency and advanced study skills. These courses will be conducted exclusively in French and students are expected to speak solely in French (including asking question, making comments, and chatting socially with friends). Students are encouraged and required to improve their French fluency outside of the classroom by self-study and exploration of French materials on a daily basis. Questions? 2 Congratulations and thank you for choosing to take French 5 and AP French. As it is designed to be a third year college level course for which you can receive up to 16 credits (depending on the university), these classes will be demanding and rewarding. By May of 2015, you will be ready for the AP exam and for college-level work in French. To prepare for the next year, you will be required to do the following. You will be expected to hand in the required work on the first day of French 5. In total, it will be worth two homework grades (one for the journal and one for the readings). 1. Listen to and speak as much French as possible. Rent movies, download music, follow French people, news sites, etc. on Twitter. Netflix has a surprisingly large collection of French movies and you can watch a good number of movies in entirety on youtube (Papillon, Cyrano de Bergerac are both available on youtube). You can watch the French news on websites provided and their other web based shows available to you. Speak to your family, friends, dog, cat, goldfish, in French. The more you think in French the better you will become in speaking it. You must be ready to discuss yourself, others, and ideas in French next year. 2. Buy a good French/English dictionary. I recommend Larousse, Collins/Robert, or Oxford/Hachette. You could also use the wordreference app. Be curious and look up words that you don t know. When reading articles or books or even when thinking about your surroundings, try to think in French and expand your French vocabulary. Keep a personal list of vocabulary in a little notebook. 3. Do the JOURNAL D ETE. (see attached) (100pts one homework grade). Please print out and write on the pages provided. You may double side it to save paper. 4. Read Le Petit Nicolas The chapters for this book are available to you here online: As they are a series of stories, you can read any of the stories you wish. Some stories even have audio. If you will be somewhere on a desert island without Internet, ask me for a hard copy. You should read 5 chapters and do the following: a. write a summary (5-7 sentences) in your own words of each chapter. b. write 4 new vocabulary words/expressions for each chapter.

3 Le Journal d été It is extremely important that you read and listen to as much French as possible over the summer. This is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary, your accent, and your overall language skills. When former AP students were asked, their main regret was that they did not actively read or write enough in French in their own time. Because I do not want you to have the same regret (yes, you can thank me later ) you are going to be responsible for the following list of activities. Try to pace yourself with one activity per week this summer. This will help you to maintain your French and prepare you to be successful on the AP exam. With these activities, you will create a 10 entry journal describing each activity. The details that you must include are listed under each activity. This journal will be due on the first day of school! (no exceptions). Apart from Journals 1 and 3, they do not have to be done in any particular order. Entry 1 (start of summer) Write about what you plan to do for the summer (3/4-1 page) in French. Try to use 5 new words/verbs and elaborate with each sentence. You might start with what you hope to do and then go on to what you will probably do realistically. (use the future tense) Entry 2 Watch one French film. Tell me the following: the date you watched the movie, the title of the movie, TEN French phrases that were used in the film (no gros mots please!), a paragraph describing the plot (en français), and a paragraph describing your opinion (en français)! Entry 3 (mid summer) Write about what your daily routine is this summer. (be sure to try to use reflexive verbs). Try to give me a glimpse of what a typical day is like for you mid-summer. (3/4-1page) (use present tense) Entries 4-5 Read and watch TWO news stories that happen in France during this summer. Include the source of the story and a summary of the story you watched en français. The summary must be a minimum of 10 sentences. You should be able to watch the news broadcasts on France 2 and France 3. I recommend the France 2 broadcast at 20h. Try these links: and Entries 6-8 Watch 3 episodes of BBC MaFrance. Write a summary of each episode ( 5 sentences), write 5 vocabulary words and do the quizzes and the games. Entries 9-10 Watch and listen to 2 different podcasts from Radio France International (RFI.fr). Follow this link specifically: (If the link fails, go to rfi.fr, click apprendre le francais, on the gray bar at the top of the page and then click exercices d écoute in the menu on the left. You can choose any of your choice. Write a summary of the episode (5-10 sentences), write five vocabulary words, and do the quizzes. (If RFI fails altogether please just watch two more news broadcasts)

4 A Noter: The following resources are just a starting point. You are not limited to them. Useful News Resources (aussi un appli) (aussi un appli) French films (look at filmarobics.com for more info and titles) Les Intouchables Ne Le Dis A Personne (Tell No One) Cyrano de Bergerac (voir sur youtube!)
