1 Mrs. Thompson French 3 / UMSL French thompsondella@rockwood.k12.mo.us Web page: Course Description: This is an elective course for sophomores, juniors and seniors who have completed French I and II. It is a continuation in the development of oral and written communication, as well as a more in-depth study of French-speaking culture and history. SUPER student 7 Shows competence in the area of the standard. Minor errors 6 Nearing competence in the area of the standard. Edge of understanding 5 Does not show competence in the standard. Struggling, needs help 0 No topic related effort 2

3 Standard Based Grading for Summative Assessments Unit assessments are graded based on a rubric that will be provided to students prior to the assessment. Three summative assessments occur each semester. Summative assessments will be entered as a percentage grade. EXPECTATIONS AND POLICIES: Tardiness policy is the school policy. Students should be in the room before the bell rings and ready to learn. Makeup work is the student s responsibility. It is the student s responsibility to clarify missing assignments with the teacher and to arrange to take quizzes or tests. A complete list of assignments can be found on the class web page Students are allowed to retake one time any formative assessment or quiz when the student scores lower than a 70% and the following criteria are met: - all work for the unit is completed and turned in. - any review session or review work assigned by the teacher is completed and turned in. - student schedules the retake with the teacher. The deadline for quizzes is one week. The most recent score counts. No retakes on unit summative assessments or final exams. Help sessions are available upon request. As a general rule, Mme Thompson is available before school starting at 7:30 and after school until 3:30 every day. Write your name, date and the title of the assignment on everything turned in. Plagiarism is the use of another person s ideas or words without crediting that person. Using an on-line translator to produce work that is turned in for a grade is plagiarism. For the first offense, the student will be given a chance to redo the assignment. For subsequent offenses, no credit will be given and student will receive an office referral. Behavior: Three B s: Be on time. Be prepared. Be respectful of self and others. Consequences: Students who break school or class rules will receive consequences such as (1) verbal or written warning, (2) parent/guardian contact, (3) detention or (4) office referral. For extreme situations, only official referrals will be given. No food or drink in class. If you have a pass to leave class, show it at the beginning of the hour. Cell phones and music players should be turned off and put away. On the first offense, the cell phone is confiscated and an office referral is written. Extra Credit: No extra credit is accepted. Homework is essential practice to achieve the skills that students are expected to master. Some homework will not be graded but you are expected to do ALL homework. 3

4 Late Work should be turned in as soon as possible before the end of the unit. Students may be assigned an academic detention to complete work not turned in by the due date. Participation: Communication is an essential standard and active participation/performance is used to assess the development of this skill. Academic detentions: Students who do not complete assignments including homework may be given a lunch academic detention lunch. Students who are unable to complete work due to a lack of preparedness (no materials) may also be given an academic detention so that they can keep up with the class. In academic detention, students will complete work necessary for success in class. Failure to serve a detention will result in further consequences from the appropriate grade level principal. Failure to turn in work will result in more detentions. 4
