Our instructors will include Boy Scouts, Adult Leaders, and others knowledgeable in the Activity Badge Subject. 8:30 AM: Check-in Please Scouts must sign up through their 8:45 AM: Opening Ceremony Pack and one registration form per Pack. 9 to 10:30 AM: 1st Session 10:30 to 12 PM: 2nd Session 12 to 12:30 PM: Closing & Lunch (All Scouts must be picked up by 12:30) $15.00 includes patch, supplies, facility use and lunch. Limited Scholarships available. Contact John Hanks (see below). Sign-up/Registration: Webelos Badge selections based on a first-paid-first-served basis. We will have to limit class sizes and overall enrollments. Sign up early. See registration form on page 5. Registrations deadline by the November 5 Roundtable. After Nov. 5 registrations only accepted to fill out classes. Please note classes could fill up by before Nov. 5. Get your registrations in early. Roundtable Webelos College Meeting, Wednesday, November 5, 7:15 PM at the LDS Church, 676 South Ave., New Canaan. Packs should send a representative to finalize class sign ups and to receive other information. Select Activity Badges carefully. Webelos may not switch classes. A few Notes: We need instructors! Please contact John Hanks, , johnwhanks@hotmail.com. A team of instructors for each badge works best. This is a Webelos event only. Younger Cub Scouts and siblings should not attend. Due to classroom size and distractions to teaching the class, parents will be discouraged to accompany their son to the selected class unless there is a special need. Parents Lounge in the school cafeteria: Free coffee/tea, information on the Webelos process, learn about the Boy Scout Program and time to relax and socialize with other parents. Food and beverages are not permitted out of the cafeteria. Youth members may NOT drink coffee. 3 Powahay District CT Yankee Council BSA 4 th Annual Saturday, November 15, 2014; 8:30 to 12:30 PM Preparing Your Webelos: Requirements needed to complete BEFORE the Activity Badge College In order to receive a full Activity badge, there are several requirements that would need to be completed before the Webelos Badge College. The boys must bring their work or a note from their parents or other proof that they have completed the requirements. Use your Den Meetings to prepare your boys. Artist: Create a scrapbook (portfolio) of your Artist activity badge projects and show it to your den leader. (Bring to the Activity Badge College). Not required but would help to prepare for the Activity Badge to earn the Art Belt Loop. Citizen*: As a Webelos Scout, earn the Cub Scout Academics belt loop for Citizenship. Participate in a family, den, or school service project. At a Webelos den meeting, talk about the service project Good Turn that you did. Communicator: Write an article about a den activity for your pack newsletter (Bring to Activity Badge College and we will feature in the Powahay News District Newsletter.) Engineer: Can Earn the badge no pre-requirements needed. We do recommend earning the Mathematic Belt Loop. Forrester: All of the requirements can be completed at the Geologist: All of the requirements can be completed at the Readyman*: Explain how you can get help quickly if there is an emergency in your home. Make a "help list" of people or agencies that can help you if you need it. Post it near a phone or another place with easy access. (Note from parent needed.) Do TWO of the following (note from leader needed that requirements were completed): 1. Explain six safety rules you should follow when "driving" a bicycle. 2. Explain the importance of wearing safety equipment when participating in sports activities (skating, skateboarding, etc.) 3. Make a home fire escape plan for your family. 4. Explain how to use each item in a first aid kit. 5. Tell where accidents are most likely to happen inside and around your home. Explain six safety rules you should remember when riding in a car. 6. Attend a first aid demonstration at a Boy Scout troop meeting, a Red Cross center, or other community event or place. Scholar: Earn the Mathematic, Language or Mathematics Belt Loop Scientist: All of the requirements can be completed at the Traveler: All of the requirements can be completed at the Instructors would NOT sign off Cub Scout Books and/or requirements but we would leave it to the Webelos Den Leader to feel confident that the requirements were taught properly. We will provide a sheet of requirements completed. We are NOT providing Activity Badge Awards and they must be purchased by the Pack and presented at a Pack Meeting. Use Internet Advancement for proper processing of the badges earned. Please select badges carefully. Last few years we ve had problems with last minute shuffling of classes. Please print names clearly and readable on the registration form so that we can prepare Webelos Badge Diplomas with correct spelling of names.

4 Webelos Activity Badges Needed to Earn the Webelos Supernova Award: Earn the Scholar Scientist Engineer Earn THREE of the following Webelos Scout activity badges: Craftsman Forester Geologist Naturalist Outdoorsman Readyman NOVA/STEM Workshop Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 Two Sessions: 9 to 10:30 or 10:30 to 12 Noon (Both sessions will cover the same materials. Only sign up for one.) STEM focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Scouts throughout the country can explore the wonders of different STEM fields as they work toward a Nova or Supernova award. There are four STEM Nova Awards and the Supernova Award. Great way to add excitement and new opportunities for your Webelos. 1. Science Everywhere Explores science. 2. Tech Talk Explores technology. 3. Swing! Explores engineering Go! Explores math in their life each day. 5. Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Award For Webelos Scouts. The Webelos College Nova Workshop Review requirements for the 4 STEM Awards. Start Requirements for the Webelos Supernova Award. Mad Science Group Stem Workshop. Lights, Color, Action This class sheds light on the properties of rainbow colors. Children observe demonstrations that blend colors to produce white light, and others that separate white light into colors. Experiments with prisms and diffraction lenses give children the opportunity to explore the color spectrum of various light sources. A chromatography activity provides an interesting demonstration of separating printed colors on a filter. Children look at the world through tinted lenses to experience colorblindness and see through the eyes of animals. A light-induced, optical effects demonstration device to take home completes this illuminating adventure! It may not be possible to complete all of the requirements during this session. We will provide district follow up opportunities to complete the requirements. How To Sign Up for NOVA Workshop Simply list NOVA as one of the Activity Badge Sessions. The workshop is in place of one of the scheduled Webelos Activity Badge. Class size is limited to 20 boys on a first paid-first-signup basis. With your parent s and unit leader s help, you must select a councilapproved mentor who is a registered Scouter. You may NOT choose your parent or your unit leader (unless the mentor is working with more than one youth). If you earned the Cub Scout Supernova award, you must repeat similar requirements while you are a Webelos Scout. Although it is not a requirement, it is recommended that you earn at least two of the four Nova awards for Cub Scouts before earning the Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Award.
