2 Why Get Trained? Nearly 100 years ago, Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting, was asked by Scout Commissioner Will McLaren what three things Scouting needed most. He quickly replied Training, Training, Training! Today training is just as important as ever, as we all want to deliver the best, safest, and most meaningful Scouting experience as possible to every Scout. We often say Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader and with good reason when leaders are trained, they: Better understand their position and their role in the unit. Help Scouts advance by knowing the BSA programs. Get a big picture view of the unit, the council, and Scouting. Ensure safe activities by knowing BSA policies and guidelines. Have more fun and feel empowered in their position! Required Trainings YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING Effective June 1, 2010, BSA Protection Training became required for all registered adult leaders. This training focuses on preventing and recognizing child abuse. (Needed every 2 years.) LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING In anticipation of required training and in alignment of our council strategic plan, all leaders must be trained in their respective positions. training differs by your role in Scouting, and offers more of a comprehensive look at all aspects of your position. There is training for nearly every role. Recommended Training FAST START TRAINING Most Fast Start Training is available at MyScouting.org It offers a basic introduction to what you will be doing as you serve your Scouts. Fast Start should be taken within two weeks of taking a new position.

4 Council Training Opportunities BASIC TRAININGS Our Council s four Districts hold Position Specific and Introduction to Outdoor Trainings throughout the year at various locations to make it easy to fit training into your busy schedule. All trainings offered follow a National syllabus and are instructed based on standards and principles used by councils across the country. These trainings are led by experienced Scouters and are attended by volunteers just like you. ADVANCED TRAININGS WOOD BADGE - This advanced training in leadership and team development brings together all the programs of Scouting. This 6-day (2- weekend) course will generally be held every other year in the summer. POWDER HORN - Is designed to help the troop, team, or crew by exposing older Scouts, Venturers, and adult leaders to safely conducted outdoor/high-adventure activities of a fun and challenging nature. OKPIK - Is the cold-weather adventure program that teaches older Scouts and leaders that are interested in learning how to develop and run a winter program for their unit. This is a multi-day Cold Weather Training Course. LEAVE NO TRACE - A weekend course that trains participants to become trainers themselves in a conservation-minded experience. Based on the Center for Outdoor Ethics Seven Principles, this event will prepare both youth and adults to be good environmental stewards.

5 Can t Get Enough? Try: BALOO Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is required for Cub Scout packs that want to plan outdoor overnight activities. OWL - OUTDOOR WEBELOS LEADER TRAINING is for all WEBELOS leaders. This training course covers the skills & resources needed to teach the outdoor activity badges and helps to provide good & safe outdoor experiences. Completion of this training is required before a WEBELOS den can go on a campout. This is district-scheduled training. INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS will provide Boy Scout leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start and guide a program the right way. Completion of this course is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is normally a day and a half long and conducted at a local Scout camp on a weekend. UNIVERSITY OF SCOUTING Supplemental Trainings for Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing, Commissioners and more are taught as part of this annual training event. You can also sign up for fun supplemental courses like Outdoor Cooking and Campfire Planning. HAZARDOUS WEATHER This online training course is required for all activities that require a Tour Plan (an activity that is high-risk or outside the council boundaries). THIS IS SCOUTING An on-line or DVD general overview of the history, organization and program of the Boy Scouts of America. Recommended for the new leader. MONTHLY ROUNDTABLE A leaders' meeting held in each district where leaders find information about upcoming district and council events and learn ways to improve the program. Most Roundtables will cover material based on participants' interest. Leaders can learn a new skill or get advice on how to solve a problem. Participation at Roundtables is required for some square knot awards. MUCH MORE There are trainings for just about every activity in Scouting. 6 Steps for Trained Status A leader who completes all the training for their position can proudly wear the Trained patch on their uniform. To be trained, a leader must complete all of the courses required of their position and submit the record of trainings to the Heart of Ohio Council. Online Training and MyScouting ONLINE TRAINING Many of the basic training courses are available online, which means you can complete them at your own pace in the comfort of your own home! It s training made easy. The training modules are typically a series of videos with real Scouters sharing their experiences or asking the same questions you might ask. The trainings are interactive and take less than an hour, with some only 30 minutes or so. Brief quizzes help you to check your knowledge of the material covered. MYSCOUTING.ORG MyScouting.org is the online portal to all of the training courses. This is where you can track and start individual training modules, and see which ones you still need to complete. To use MyScouting.org, you will need to create an account. It is important to link your MyScouting account to your BSA member ID number this will ensure that your completed training is connected to the council s record of training. You can find your member ID number on your BSA membership card, or call the council office at to request your ID number. Once you ve created an account, click on My Profile, enter your member ID number and select Heart of Ohio Council, number 450 from the list of councils. Remember, if your member ID number is not linked to your MyScouting.org account, the council can t record you as trained!

7 Every Deserves A Trained Leader! A special Council Shoulder Patch is available to all leaders who complete the required trainings for their PRIMARY POSITION ONLY. Protection Training must not expire in the current year. If you are already a trained leader, first check the Validation Tool steps on the back page, then stop by the council office, confirm your records, and you can receive the *FREE Council Shoulder Patch too. *Limited Supply. YOUR NEXT STEP So you re ready to get trained and give your Scouts the experience they deserve! So what do you do now? First, complete the online trainings available at and make sure your BSA member ID number is attached to your account so the council can record your training. Your member ID can be found next to your name on the mailing label of the Trail Talk newsletter. Next, visit the council website at 1. Click Training tab to find current face to face training opportunities. 2. Click your district name under the Districts tab to find a current calendar of district training opportunities. 3. 8 Validate your Trained Status Have you ever wondered if your BSA adult leader training record is upto-date? Or why leaders are listed as Untrained on your unit roster even though you know they've taken the appropriate courses? There is now online assistance available to answer those questions via "Training Validation" is a new menu item located under E-Learning on the left hand side menu. Clicking on Training Validation opens a new Training Search window. Searching via the BSA member identification number usually works best. A link for "Advanced Search" allows for the input of a Scouter's name. A help button on the upper right side of the web page (the question mark) can also provide assistance. If completed training is not shown, training points of contact or individual leaders can submit changes to official BSA training records by filling out an Individual Leader Inventory of Training form and sending it to your District Executive or Training Chair. Contact information is under the district tab on the council website. The form is available at: NOTE: When completing online training at make sure you enter your full name, council number (450), and BSA membership ID number. That way, your permanent BSA training record will be AUTOMATICALLY UPDATED after you complete each course. There is NO NEED to submit the inventory form in these instances.
