2 WELCOME HOME LOPE! Although students aren t required to live on campus at GCU, the experience is unlike any other. Imagine instead of getting up, getting ready, commuting to campus, finding something to do between classes then driving home, you could live just a five minute walk away from all of your classes. You ll also have access to six different dining areas as well as a modern recreation center and workout facility and numerous extracurricular activities. The independence of living on campus will teach you invaluable life skills and introduce you to lifelong friends. Grand Canyon University s Office of Residence Life is here to help you make a seamless transition into campus life. Our hope is that this guide can answer almost any question you have about living on campus from the student dorm set-ups and housing policies to the application process and how to pick a roommate. If you or your parents still have questions, please contact your admissions representative or the Office of Residence Life. Here at GCU, we re officially rolling out the welcome mat just for you. 13 Q: Where do new students live? A: Most new students live in one of the residence halls. However, individuals who are 21 years old or 20 years old and have completed 60+ credit hours or are married are eligible to live in the North Rim Apartments. Q: How will I benefit from living on campus? A: Research indicates that students who reside on campus are more satisfied with their college experience, perform stronger academically and are more likely to graduate within four years than their commuting classmates. In addition, they have a strong support system with peers who are going through similar experiences. Q: What do students do for fun on campus? A: GCU students participate in a variety of activities including intramurals, events planned by the Office of Student Engagement, Arena concerts, sporting events, outdoor activities and Bible studies. There are also several shopping centers, restaurants and movie theatres nearby. Q: Does GCU have co-ed housing? A: Cohabitation is not permitted on the campus of Grand Canyon University. Each building has separate housing areas for each gender. Daily open hall hours allow students of the opposite gender to visit friends in each suite s living room. Students of the opposite gender are never permitted within the bedrooms. Q: In what ways can I personalize my room? A: You may decorate your room with fun bedding, photos of friends and family, throw pillows, rugs, etc. You may also hang posters using 3M hooks or staples. Q: When/how do I find out the name and contact information of my future roommate? A: Once you have completed the online housing application, you will be able to look up the name and contact information of your roommate(s) at any time by logging into the housing application, clicking the Application tab, then Status and finally View Profile next to your roommate s name. The Office of Residence Life is not able to provide this information due to privacy policies. Q: How do I live with my friend who is also attending GCU? A: Students wanting to live with another specific GCU student need to coordinate making the same room reservation on the online housing application. The Office of Residence Life does not place students in their housing assignments and will not coordinate the reservations of students who want to room together. Q: What are room and board costs? A: Cost varies depending on the type of housing you select. Please discuss cost break-down with your admissions representative. Q: What kind of internet access is available on campus? A: There is an Ethernet port located within every dorm suite and wireless internet (Wi-Fi) in the dormitories. Students in the North Rim Apartments must set up and finance internet on their own through Cox Communications ( ). Q: Is there cable TV? A: Yes, there is a cable hookup in the living room of all dormitories and North Rim Apartments. Basic cable is provided in the living areas at no extra cost to the resident. Students in the dormitories may not upgrade to premium cable. Apartment residents may select the cable package of their choosing with the understanding that an upgrade must be paid for by the student. Q: Are land phone lines available? A: Only North Rim Apartments have access to land lines. Those who wish to connect to a land line may do so through Cox Communications ( ). Q: Is there air conditioning? A: Yes, every room is air conditioned with an individual thermostat. Q: When can I move in? A: You will be assigned a specific move-in time and date based upon your dorm assignment. A: The laundry facilities in all dormitories and North Rim Apartments accept coins or credit/ debit cards. Lopes Cash is not an acceptable form of payment. Q: Can I loft/bunk my bed? A: You may bunk your bed to create more space efficiency in your room. Ask your RD for bed pins when you arrive to bunk your bed. Loft beds are not permitted with the exception of the University-provided lofts in triple occupancy rooms. Q: Can I bring my own bed? And/or can I have the University-provided furniture removed from my room? A: No, all university-provided furniture must remain in the room and intact through the duration of a student s stay on campus. Any removed or missing furniture at the end of the year will result in housing fines. Q: Can I have my own room? A: Students do not have the opportunity to choose a private room. If you have extenuating circumstances that require a private room, you must contact the Disability Services Office and submit to a general screening process. Q: The dorm I want is full, is there a waitlist? A: Yes, when dorms are at capacity we start waitlists. While students do not have to sign a Statement of Faith or be a Christian to attend GCU, they are expected to abide by a code of conduct. This code, or Community Covenant, upholds certain University standards that are believed to enhance the overall moral fabric of the community. A Community Covenant means that GCU students are expected to show mutual respect and courtesy to one another, faculty and staff. Our expectation is that students reflect what is known as the fruit of the Spirit in their behavior. This includes demonstrating love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Our vision is that students strive to treat others as they would want to be treated. Community Expectations Our goal is to develop a community based on the biblical principles of respect and honor. We as covenant members will strive to encourage one another, respect one another s differences, speak truthfully and create lasting relationships. We understand that these actions are most possible as a result of choosing to put others above ourselves and to look out for the interests of others. STUDENT CONDUCT GCU students are required to treat each other, faculty and staff with courtesy and respect at all times. Each individual plays a role in developing a harmonious campus community and as such is held to the standards outlined in the Student Handbook. University Expectations More specifically, the GCU Community Covenant includes the following: 1. All students demonstrate courtesy for all others in regard to choice of language. 2. All students respect others by demonstrating love in confronting others. 3. All students consider others when choosing their actions. 4. All students obey the University polices as a matter of respect for the community as a whole. 5. Grand Canyon University is committed to maintaining a drug- and alcohol-free community. Being under the influence of, possessing or distributing illegal drugs or possessing drug paraphernalia on campus or at Universitysanctioned events will not be tolerated. 6. GCU affirms that sexual activity is reserved for those in a committed marriage relationship. 7. Guests are the responsibility of the student who is hosting them. STARREZ HOUSING PORTAL StarRez is an online portal GCU uses to process all student housing and meal plan selections. Residence Life has provided a step-by-step registration guide at gcu.edu/housing.
