Spring 2012 NYU Florence Housing Introduction and Descriptions Please read all of the following information carefully, and the NYU Florence staff at should you have questions before completing the Housing Application. LIVING IN NYU HOUSING IS MANDATORY All students on the NYU Florence program are required to live in NYU-arranged housing. All Off-Campus Residences and Homestays are leased by the University and are considered part of the New York University Florence housing program. All freshmen are required to live on campus. These are conditions of participation in the program. HOUSING PROCESS AND AVAILABILITY NYU Florence staff will try to accommodate student preferences; however, due to space limitations, students may be placed in any of the housing possibilities regardless of preferences. Upperclass students should be aware that on-campus options may be limited, and priority is given to students who have a documented need to live on campus. Please be aware that in an effort to best accommodate the largest number of students, NYU Florence will only consider roommate requests for the same bedroom (i.e. double, triple), not based upon a larger groupings (i.e. a suite, an entire floor/residence, residences in the same vicinity, etc.). While students may request a living situation offered in a prior term, be aware that the off-campus properties sometimes change from term to term, and factors besides a request to live in a specific location have to be considered in meeting student needs. NYU cannot release roommate information pre-arrival due to privacy laws. NO OVERNIGHT GUESTS POLICY According to Italian National Anti-Terrorism laws, only those persons registered to live in a particular living situation may spend the night there. NYU Florence can only register students enrolled in the program as living its housing, and housing assignments are specific and registered in advance, so no overnight guests are permitted under any circumstances. Guests must stay in hotels or find other accommodations. All guests must leave NYU Florence facilities by 11:00 p.m. INDOOR TEMPERATURES IN ITALY In wintertime, students should be prepared for rooms to be kept at lower temperatures than is customary in the U.S. Local law permits a maximum temperature of 20 C (68 F), with a tolerance of 2 extra degrees only, and heat may only be on for a total of twelve hours each day. Furthermore, there are laws that specify when in the year heating systems may be activated and must be deactivated (usually November 1 st and April 15 th respectively). While air conditioning is available on campus, this is not a standard commodity in Italy. Students who need air conditioning for health reasons should request to live on campus. GENERAL HOUSING TYPES There are three housing types between the two categories, on and off-campus housing. The options are: On-Campus Residence Halls Off-Campus Residences Homestays

HOUSING DESCRIPTIONS AND COSTS On-Campus Housing: This housing option includes a mandatory meal plan, which is comprised of continental breakfast and dinner buffet served daily in the Villa Natalia cafeteria. There are no on-campus cooking facilities, and cooking devices are prohibited in the rooms. Students live in Villa Natalia (mostly freshmen) or Villa Colletta. Rooms are single-sex, unless otherwise requested, floors are mixed-gender. Residential Life staff lives in both buildings, and Villa Natalia s reception desk is staffed 24-hours a day Smoking is prohibited indoors but permitted in designated outdoor spaces. Single Bedroom: 1 person to 1 bedroom $9, Double Bedroom: 2 people to 1 bedroom $8, Triple Bedroom: 3 people to 1 bedroom $7, Quad Bedroom: 4 people to 1 bedroom $7, Description of the On-Campus Residence Halls: Villa Natalia was the home of 16th Century Italian writer and poet, Giovanni della Casa. In the 19th Century the villa was enlarged and restored to house the exiled Serbian Queen, Natalia. It was from this young woman that the villa derived its name. The Villa features a computer lab, exercise room, lounge, dining center, laundry facility, vending machines, a microwave and refrigerator/freezer available for student use, and a climate control heat and air-conditioning system. Villa Natalia houses over 75 students in quad, triple, double, and single rooms with twin-size beds (some rooms have bunk beds), desks, individual closet and drawer storage, bedding, and en-suite bathrooms. Each room has connections for phone and internet access. From the room phone, students can make local calls but must pay for all cellular, national, and international calls with a calling card. A cleaning and linen service (sheets and towels) is provided on a weekly basis. Villa Colletta was built in the 1400s and named after the Neapolitan historian, Pietro Colletta. Although parts of the building are modern, the villa is very much in character with the rest of the estate. Villa Colletta features a computer lab, lounge, a microwave and refrigerator/freezer available for student use, classroom space, and a climate control heat and air-conditioning system. Villa Colletta houses approximately 25 students in quad, triple, double, and single rooms. Each room is furnished with a wardrobe closet, desk, nightstand, twin-size beds, bedding, a room telephone, and internet data port. From the room phone, students can make local calls but must pay for all cellular, national, and international calls with a calling card. Most rooms have a shared hallway bathroom. A cleaning and linen service (sheets and towels) is provided on a weekly basis. A small laundry facility for residents is located on the top floor. Colletta residents have equal access to all Natalia facilities. A note about Internet On Campus: Internet service on campus is fairly reliable, but wireless service is only available in common areas. In the rooms, students need to use Ethernet cords to gain access. Any issues with Internet should be reported to the Facilities Office in Florence in a timely manner.

Off-Campus Housing: (No Meal Plan included, except the Homestay with Meals option) Students living off campus cannot enroll in the on-campus meal plan but can purchase individual meals on campus. Off-campus housing is located throughout various urban and residential neighborhoods around the city of Florence, mostly within the historic city walls. Students must use public transportation (one or more buses) to travel between the NYU Florence campus and their living situations. Taxis are expensive but are the safest way to travel at night. Students should budget for these expenses and leave plenty of time for the commute. The Residences and Homestays are generally in older buildings, ranging from the 13th to 19th centuries, not modern high-rises. Facilities vary greatly since few buildings were originally constructed as student accommodations, as now utilized. Location, dècor, furnishings, appliances, and floor layouts vary significantly from living situation to living situation. Toasters, microwaves, air-conditioning units, dishwashers and DVD players are NOT considered standard amenities in off-campus housing. All living situations have washing machines, but some students elect to do laundry in neighborhood Laundromats because clothes dryers are uncommon in Italy and may not be provided in housing. The laundry machines located in living situations may differ in functions. Some of them require the payment of a small fee, which may vary from one living situation to another, in order to be used. Sheets, blankets, pillows, and basic kitchen utensils are supplied. Students should bring or purchase a towel (for travel) and wash cloths, if desired. Those who choose to bring their own sheets should avoid bringing plain white sheets, as these may easily be confused with those provided by the cleaning company. Energy conservation is important to Italians; as such, students should plan to use less hot water, electricity, and heat than may be standard elsewhere. Average utility costs are included in the housing charge. In some locations, hot water heaters may be limited in capacity, causing hot water to run out quickly. Students need to be mindful of usage. Students are supported via Peer Advisors and Residence Hall Managers who provide programming, assistance, emergency support, etc.; however, these individuals may not live in every housing location. For phone service, one cellular telephone is issued to each Residence and Homestay by the Facilities Office. Students are responsible for the care and return of these cell phones, and the phones must stay in the living situation in a space where all students have access. For personal use, most students purchase their own cellular phone upon arrival. To make long-distance calls, many students use a VoIP service, like Skype, or locally purchased international calling cards. Off-Campus Residences: (A residence suite may house from 4-22 students, and an entire Off-Campus Residence may host from 7 to 45 students. NYU Florence will only accept roommate requests based upon bedroom type, not larger groupings.) Note: Not all Residences have all bedroom types. Single Bedroom 1 person to 1 bedroom $8, Double Bedroom 2 people to 1 bedroom $6, Triple Bedroom 3 people to 1 bedroom $5, Quad Bedroom 4 people to 1 bedroom $4,974.00

Description of Off-Campus Residences: Off-Campus Residences may be described as dormitory-style facilities located in and around the center of Florence. Residences are high-occupancy living arrangements (meaning a large suite, an entire floor, or an entire building is occupied by NYU Florence students) with multiple bedrooms and shared common areas and bathrooms. Specific amenities include Internet and a weekly cleaning/linens service. Bedrooms consist of singles (limited availability), doubles, triples, and quads. All students and guests must follow visitation rules. All Off-Campus Residences are non-smoking. A note about Internet in Off-Campus Residences: Off campus, Internet service may be wireless or require an Ethernet cord and may not be as efficient or consistent as that to which students are accustomed. Students should expect that at times, Internet service may be sporadic. NYU Florence, the landlords, and the telephone company work to reinstate service when connections fail, but issues are not always quickly or easily resolved. Students can help with the process by maintaining communication with the Facilities Office in Florence. Sometimes repairs require time and therefore patience on the part of the residents affected. Quad room in Off-Campus Residence Double in an Off-Campus Residence Triple in an Off-Campus Residence

Single in an Off-Campus Residence Homestays: (Families may host 1 or 2 students. NYU Florence will only accept roommate requests based upon bedroom type, not larger groupings.) Single Bedroom / With Meals 1 person to 1 bedroom $7, Double Bedroom / With Meals 2 people to 1 bedroom $6, Meals = Breakfast & Dinner daily Single Bedroom / No Meals 1 person to 1 bedroom $6,229 Double Bedroom / No Meals 2 people to 1 bedroom $6,088 Description of the Homestay Option For students seeking to truly immerse themselves in Italian culture, a Homestay is the only way to go. Students who choose this housing option live with an Italian family and are encouraged to participate in immersion activities organized by the Office of Student Life in Florence. There is no typical kind of Homestay. Most Homestay hosts are traditional families with children while others are single individuals or couples. Some families have pets. Many families host more than one student, but others host just one student at a time. The amount of contact between the family and the student varies from one situation to another. Both students in Homestays with Meals and students in Homestays without Meals report that most contact takes place at meal times. Homestays are the best way to learn Italian and live the local lifestyle. Most Italian families do not speak very much English but make an effort to understand and be understood. Students who live in Homestays tend to learn Italian very quickly and experience Florentine life in meaningful ways. NYU s host families are accustomed to hosting students, so they are tolerant and receptive to cultural differences. There are no curfews or difficult-to-follow house rules in the Homestays. Usually common sense respect is enough.

Students should indicate their interest by checking the Homestay option on their housing application and add any additional preferences, allergies, or needs (e.g. older or younger children, no pets, some knowledge of English, etc.) in the Comments section of the form. Roommate requests are welcome. Breakfast and dinner are included in the cost of a Homestays with Meals, but access to kitchen facilities is not included. In a Homestays without Meals, students are welcome to use the host family s kitchen. Students who choose the Homestay with Meals option should be specific about dietary needs and food allergies. In both Homestay types, one load of laundry per week is included per student. Some host families show students how to use the washing machine while others prefer to do the students laundry for them. Although Internet access is not guaranteed in the Homestay option, most families have Internet. There is no cleaning/linens service, but sheets, blankets, and pillows are provided.
