You should take some time to read through the remainder of this packet to familiarize yourself with our basic personnel, rules, and 1
procedures. Once you have read over the packet, feel free to mingle and talk to fellow students and staff. 2
First things first: Getting on the Internet! Some areas will not require a password and other areas will. Username: oxyguest Password: LambiodaL3 (case sensitive) You will have to restart your computer after entering your login info (sometimes several times). Then: Camp Website Visit This is your one stop site for all your needs while at VBI. There you will find a schedule, links to lab placements, modules (electives) descriptions, a list of frequently asked questions, and much more. Spend some time familiarizing yourself with this site, and make sure you bookmark it you will be using it a lot. Logistics Locations We are living in two buildings, E. Norris Hall and Newcomb Hall. We eat meals in the Marketplace on the 2nd floor of Johnson Student Center. Lab rooms will be on lower campus in different buildings. Socrates hour will be on the dorm patio. Here is a link to the campus map pdf Need Help? The admin staff is here to help you have the most positive camp experience possible. To that end, please always feel free to communicate with us (or any staff member) any needs, concerns, suggestions, etc. Our phone number is 330-3DEBATE ( ) or just stop by the office. VBI Office We re in room 101 of Newcomb Hall. Our phone number is 330-3DEBATE ( ). This is also where student prescription medicines and the lost and found are kept. (You may also get texts from an additional number: We use this for mass texts. You can also reply to these texts and call this number to reach the office.) Meals All meals are eaten in the Marketplace on the 2nd floor of Johnson Student Center. You will need to have your key card or your meal card (commuters) to enter the dining hall, so we recommend you attach it to your keys or lanyard. Dining hall hours: Breakfast - 8:15-9:00 AM Lunch - 12:00-1:30 PM (They will stop serving at 1:15) Dinner - 5:00-7:00 PM (They will stop serving at 6:30) Attendance Please be very diligent about being where you are supposed to be, and being there on time. We have only a short period of time before we must call the police when we can t find you, so please be conscientious about attendance. Students are required to check in with one of their lab leaders at breakfast between 8:15 AM and 9 AM. Attendance will also be taken at all lectures and lab activities during the day. You must always let the office know if you are not going to be where you are scheduled to be. Students may check out and leave campus with an adult so long as we have permission communicated to us through a parent or guardian and the student checks out of the office. When you return after checking out, make sure to physically check back into the office. You may not call us only. 3
At all times for attendance purposes you need to be physically present for an instructor or admin staffer to count you as present. Phone calls or passing word through a friend is not sufficient. Medical Needs Prescription medication can be stored in the office. Someone will always staff the office at the times you need to take your medication. If at any time you are sick or injured please notify the office immediately. It is better to take preventative measures than to allow yourself to get very sick and undermine a huge chunk of your camp experience. Dormitory Keys If you lose the key to your room, you will need to get it replaced. There will be a $50 fee from Occidental (paid by you) for replacing lost keys, so make sure you look thoroughly before you report it missing. If you re sure you lost it, contact the VBI office. If you get locked out of your room, come to the office in Newcomb Hall, room 101. Module Sign-Ups Sign-up for modules will be done online with your lab leader. You will rank your top 3 choices for each module timeslot. While we make every attempt to accommodate your first choice, due to room constraints, you will sometimes be in your second or third-choice modules. You may not switch into a different module than you ve been assigned or you will be missing at the attendance check. Because no one will know where you are, police will quickly be notified and you will be liable for all such consequences. All signups will be done through the camp website. Room Issues If during the camp you have issues with your room just let the office know. Occidental will not be cleaning rooms or changing linens, though you are welcome to launder them yourselves. Laundry There is coin laundry in Norris & Newcomb- $1.00 for both washing and drying. You will need to purchase washing and drying credits on your card during lunch or dinner (cash only, $6 minimum). You might want to buddy up with someone to share laundry credits. You may not launder your linens, but there will be a clean linen exchange midway through camp. Concessions There is a campus store in Johnston Student Center, the Green Bean Coffee Lounge on the patio of Johnston, and vending machines are in lots of different places on campus, including some in the residences. The Green Bean Coffee Lounge (8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, M-F) is located on the Branca Patio, at the South end of Johnson Student Center. The Bookstore (10:00 AM - 4:30 PM, M-F) is located on the 1st floor of the Johnson Student Center. Evacuation Procedure 1. Evacuate: Dorm heads and staff should calmly evacuate all residents. Knock on all doors: be sure to check restrooms and common areas. 2. Assemble: Gather all residents in a single location at least 20 feet from the building. 3. Account: Dorm heads and staff should have a list of all residents and room numbers. Identify all persons and determine if any persons are not present. There are evacuation procedures listed on the back of the doors in each room. Oxy Alert System Emergency sirens are located on the Patterson Football Field, and on the roof of the E. Norris residence hall. If you hear siren sounds, stop all activities and listen for instructions. The system will instruct persons to remain in the building, or to evacuate. Please follow instructions and await further word from Campus Safety and other College representatives. Illness It s very common at camps like VBI for kids to get run down. Here are some things you can do to avoid illness. Let us know if you re not feeling well! Get as much sleep as you can 4
Drink lots of water Wash your hands we have free hand sanitizer in the office Don t shake hands a friendly wave is just as fun Cover your cough try your elbow, it s so fun! Rules General Rules 1. You are obviously not allowed to do anything illegal. Doing so will result in you being immediately sent home. These activities include but are not limited to: The use of alcohol, tobacco (even if over 18), or other drugs Gambling Possession of fireworks, firearms, or knives 2. Don t damage campus property. 3. Rooms to your doors are to be kept open whenever someone other than you or your roommate is present. 4. Please do not open any emergency exits. The alarms will sound and emergency services may respond. You will be responsible for any financial liability incurred by the camp due to your actions. There are large fees for leaving building doors propped open. 5. It is important that students treat those around them with respect. Harassment in any form will not be tolerated and will result in serious consequences. This includes sexual harassment and otherwise offensive and inappropriate behaviors. 6. The only way you are allowed to leave campus is for you to check out of the office with the adult you are leaving with. If that person is not your parent or guardian, we must have your their permission. 7. Other than parents or guardians, non-institute guests are not allowed. 8. You are expected to attend every event, including lectures, modules, labs, practice rounds, and special events. Dormitory Rules 1. After your team meeting ends at 10pm, you must be in your dorm building. You can only walk between the dorms with an instructor. If you need to work with someone other than your roommate, you must in a public lounge or study space and you must be quiet. 2. You must be in your room starting at 11:45pm, when we will start bed checks. If you will want to go to bed before 11:45pm, please notify the office by 10:30pm so we know not to wake you up. 3. Curfew is midnight. After midnight, you must be in YOUR OWN room quietly working or sleeping. The hallways are Quiet Zones to respect those trying to sleep. Staff will be roaming the halls to ensure compliance. 4. For your safety, whenever you are working in a room other than your own, the door to that room must be wide-open. Closet doors may not obstruct the view into your room, nor may room-doors be bolted partially open for staff members from the hall. Reminders! One of the great virtues of VBI students is the hard work and dedication they put into making every camp a successful one. Unfortunately sometimes students underestimate the amount of sleep they need and fail to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating properly. The result is that students become sick or exhausted and ultimately are less able to do the things they want to do. Please be conscientious about taking care of your health by getting adequate sleep and eating healthy food regularly. The best way to make sure you get to enjoy camp all the way through is to take care of yourself. 5
Please call your parents. If you don t they worry about you... and then they call us. We are happy to send along their well-wishing messages, but we have found over the years that both students and parents seem to be happier if communication remains direct. 6
