1 << F.A.Qs : Kapolei Campus Move >> QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE MOVE Q. When will students who are graduating need to vacate the Kapiolani dorms? A.Students will need to vacate the dorms by the usual/standard date, which is three (3) days after the end of term by noon (12 PM). This date will be Monday, March 12:00 PM. Q. Do I need to change, by myself, my address registered for my bank account? (mobile phone? residence card? insurance contracted through ES TOUR?) A.Yes. It will be the students responsibility to change their own addresses for accounts such as: banks, phones, insurances, credit cards, etc. Q. When can we know where we live after the move to Kapolei? A.All housing was assigned on Wednesday, February 4th. The only students not necessarily knowing where they are living by this date, are the students choosing to do a homestay. The homestay company is in charge of placement. Q. If I want to do a homestay, will HTIC help me? A.Yes. HTIC is introducing/giving your information to the homestay company Study & Stay Hawaii. From there, HTIC will not be directly involved in payment or placement. Q. If I am going on vacation (away from Oahu) during break, what should I do? How will my stuff be moved? A.This was covered in the Town Hall Meeting in January.. Students must have their belongings packed and delivered to the location we instruct them by the date and time we will indicate (see website for latest updates). If a student is going on vacation, this must be done before they leave. Q. What should I do if I have a TV and want to bring it to Kapolei? A.Please try to arrange a friend with a vehicle to help move TVs, or please see David in OSS to try to come up with a solution. Q. Can a student stay in the Kapiolani dorm after the winter term is over? We want to enjoy more time in Honolulu. 2 Q. How can I receive updates about the move to Kapolei? A.Students can check the HTIC website for updates about the move every Friday. NEW CAMPUS RELATED QUESTIONS Q. What are the hours of the library? Can students copy or print at night? A.The hours of the library will remain the same as the current hours: Monday-Thursday: 8:00 am - 9:00 pm Fridays: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Saturdays: CLOSED Sundays: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm Printing will be available to students during open hours. Q. What is the security arrangement for on-campus and off-campus (Kalaeloa)? A.On-campus: There is 24hr security that will be patrolling the campus. Kalaeloa: Has their own security that patrols the property. Q. Will I be able to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner? A. Yes. There will be meals provided 7 days a week. The package deal/meal plan is currently under negotiation, however, each individual meal may be purchased for $9.00/drink included. Q. What are the hours of the cafeteria? A. Details are still under negotiation, but there will be three meals provided daily. Q. If I am a smoker, where can I smoke? A.There will be a designated smoking area on campus. This will be the ONLY place that smoking is allowed. Smoking is prohibited anywhere else on campus. Smoking is not allowed within 20 feet of entrances, open windows, or inside the buildings according to Hawaii state law. This will be strictly enforced. Q. Is there a shopping area near-by? A.Yes. The Kapolei Shopping Center is near the campus. Other stores in close proximity include: Walmart, Costco, Safeway, Target, Kmart, Foodland, Ross, Longs, many restaurants and fast-food places. There is also a Don Quijote about 3 miles away from the campus. Q. Are there vending machines in the housing building? Farrington Hwy, Kapolei, Hawaii page. 2 / 7

3 A.Yes. There will be vending machines on the 1st floor of the housing building and the administration/classroom building. Q. Does the new campus have a music room? A.There is a classroom on the 2nd floor that is soundproofed and currently planned to serves as the music room. However, there is limited space and storage space in the room. There is a high possibility not all of the current music equipment will be able to transfer to the new campus. Q. Is it safe to ride my bicycle to campus? What roads are safe to use? A.There are no bike lanes on the majority of the main roads in Kapolei. It is not really safe to ride bicycles on the roads there; especially at night because there are no street lights. NEW (KAPOLEI) DORMITORY-RELATED QUESTIONS Q. I would like to know about washer and dryer access. A.On the 1st floor of the housing building, there will be 10 washers and 10 dryers for students to use. You will have 24hr access to the laundry room. Q. How much will we pay for washing machines and dryers? A. There will be no change in pricing. It will remain 50 cents for both the washers and dryers. Q. Am I allowed to cook in the room? A. No. There is a student lounge area with sinks, microwaves, refrigerators, etc. on the 2nd floor. You have 24 hour access to this room and you may cook there. Q. Am I allowed to use cooking devices in the room? A. No. No microwaves, hotplates, coffee makers, hot water boilers, rice cookers, etc. are allowed in the Kapolei dormitories. Q. Am I allowed to put things on the wall? A.Refer to student handbook pg 51 - B) 4. Only removable, plastic adhesives should be used to attach decorations to the walls. Tape, tacks, pins, nails and other hardware stuck in the wall and/or doors that leave holes or damage the interior paint shall result in a fine. Q. Am I allowed to put things on the door? Am I allowed to use a boom box in the room? A.Yes, during non-quiet hours. Make sure to be respectful and courteous of neighbors and roommates. Quiet hours are as follows: Sunday-Thursday: 10:00 pm - 7:00 am Fridays, Saturdays and the day before a holiday: 11:00 pm - 7:00 am Q. Am I allowed to have my off-campus/outside/non Tokai-related friends to visit my room? A.Refer to student handbook pg 50-2) visitation hours. Guests are permitted in the residence hall between these hours: Sunday-Thursday: 7:00 am - 10:00 pm Fridays-Saturdays: 7:00 am - 11:00 pm Evening prior to a holiday: 7:00 am - 11:00 pm Q. Do dorm students have to buy the meal tickets and how much? A.Currently the meal plan package is under negotiation. However, individual meals cost around $9.00 which includes a drink. Q. Location of the bathroom? Is it in the room? A.No. There are several communal bathrooms located on the girls floor and the boys floor of the dormitory building. Each bathroom has many showers, sinks and toilets. Q. Room Type? Is there a single occupancy room available? A.There are double and quadruple occupancy rooms available for students. No single occupancy rooms are available for students. Q. What s the standard equipment in each room? Fridge? T.V set? A.There will not be refrigerators or T.V. sets in the dorm rooms. Each room is equipped with A/C. Q. I heard the shared refrigerator will be available. Where is it located? A.There will be shared refrigerators, microwaves, etc. in the 2nd floor student lounge area in the housing building. Q. Can I purchase my own refrigerator and put it in my room? A. 5 Q. What s the visitor policy for the housing building? A.Refer to student handbook pg 50-2) visitation hours. Guests are permitted in the residence hall between these hours: Sunday-Thursday: 7:00 am - 10:00 pm Fridays-Saturdays: 7:00 am - 11:00 pm Evening prior to a holiday: 7:00 am - 11:00 pm Q. How will males and females be separated in the housing? A.They are separated by floor.. Q. Is there a vacuum machine available for residents to use? A.Yes. There will be vacuums available for student use stored by the 1st floor security desk in the housing building. Q. If my room becomes messy, what kind of cleaning supplies will be available? A.Students will be responsible to purchase their own cleaning supplies. Q. Can I leave my door open while I am in my room? A.No. For safety and security reasons, doors should never be propped open. Make sure to always shut and lock your doors, both on-campus and in the Kalaeloa rental homes. Q. Am I allowed to use chemicals in the room? A. No chemicals are allowed in the dorm rooms. The only exception to this is normal household cleaning wipes and sprays. Q. Do the same rules apply in the new dorm? A.Most of the same rules will apply, with the exception that there will be absolutely no cooking or cooking appliances allowed in the dorm rooms. Also, the gender floor separation rule will no longer be in effect at the new campus. Q. Can a friend visit my dorm room during the day or after class? A.Yes, but you must follow the visiting hours policy. Refer to student handbook pg 50-2) visitation hours. 6 Q. Can students who are Core 5 next term live in on-campus dormitories? A.The on-campus dormitories will be assigned by the following priority: 1) LA students graduating Spring 2015 term 2) New students arriving from Japan 3) CP levels 1-4 If there are still open spaces in the dormitories after the three priorities have been met, then yes, core 5 would be able to live in the on-campus dorms. OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING RELATED QUESTIONS Q. How many shuttles to from off-campus housing to school do you have each day? Will they be enough? A.HTIC will make sure to have enough shuttles to bring students to and from campus. The shuttle service will be experimental at first, until the number of shuttles and time of pick-ups and drop-offs is better figured out. Students will be surveyed once school starts to see when the shuttles are most needed. Q. Who is going to come to the rental homes for maintenance? A.For simple things such as burnt out lightbulbs and replacement items, it will be the students responsibilities. Once a month you can get a free replacement of the A/C filter from the main office at Kalaeloa. For all functionality problems (example: running toilet, oven or refrigerator stops working) students will need to call the Kalaeloa crew and they will come to fix it for free. Q. Can I choose the homestay house? How long does it take for me to walk from my homestay house to HTIC campus? A.The homestay company that will we be working with, Study & Stay Hawaii, will be placing you. HTIC is not directly involved with placement/location. Q. Is it dangerous (unsafe) in the rental house area? 7 Q. What are the HTIC rules for the off-campus housing? A.Students will need to follow the Kalaeloa Community Rules. Each student will receive a copy and should read through it at least once to make sure they understand the rules. We will hold a meeting to go over the rules once students have been assigned to their rental homes. Q. Can my family stay in my room when they come to visit me? (rental house) A.No. There will be no space for a family to stay in the rental house with all of the students. It will also be unfair to the other students living in that rental house. Q. Can friends visit us-the rental houses? A.Yes. However, students must follow the visiting policy of the Kalaeloa community. Q. Will there be someone living at the dorm or Kalaeloa housing to help the students if there is trouble? A.There will not be a live-in adult in the on-campus dormitories. Campus will have 24hr security to monitor the facilities and grounds. This topic is still being discussed for the Kalaeloa housing. Q. If on-campus dormitories are full with other students, can Core 4 live in rental homes? A.The Kalaeloa rental homes will be assigned by the following priority: 1) LA students 2) CP level 5 If there are still open spaces in the rental homes after the two priorities are met, then yes, core 4 would be able to live in the rental homes. Q. Are you going to use the same furniture as now for the rental homes? A.There will be some of the same furniture and some newly purchased furniture. Q. Will there be security for the rental homes? A.Kalaeloa has their own security that patrols the property. Q. If I live in Kalaeloa rental homes, what is the way I will get to campus? Does HTIC have a shuttle bus?
