On-Campus Living Guide

2 - WELCOME FROM UNIVERSITY HOUSING STAFF Welcome New Eagles! Congratulations on your acceptance to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world s leader in aviation and aerospace higher education! Living on campus can be a significant and positive part of the total university experience, and offers students the chance to grow as individuals and to develop many long lasting relationships. Living with other students in the residence halls can also be an important part of your overall success as a student at ERAU. Embry-Riddle believes that living on campus, combined with academic support services, plays an important part in getting students off to a great start. Research shows that those who live on campus have higher grade point averages and are more likely to graduate on time. We believe that the residence halls are more than a place to live; they are also a place to learn. The departments of University Housing and Residence Life are dedicated to making the campus living and learning experience the best that it can be for ERAU students. This guide will give you an overview of living on-campus at Embry-Riddle and provide answers to most of your questions. The information will also be helpful in planning your trip to campus. We encourage you to read it carefully and keep it handy for future reference. It should answer most questions you may have about living on campus. We welcome the opportunity to assist you in any way with your university housing needs. Please feel free to contact us or visit our home page on the Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach web site. Let us know if we can help. We wish you the best with your preparations for college life. We look forward to seeing you soon! Sincerely, University Housing Staff Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is proud to be a Tobacco Free Campus. University policy prohibits the use of tobacco products anywhere on University owned or lease property including buildings, parking lots, and personal vehicles. Questions regarding this policy can be address to the Office of Student Affairs.

A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE - 3 University Housing At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University Housing is responsible for providing secure and comfortable residence halls. Our office strives to create an on-campus living environment that supports the overall mission of the University. Our professional and student staff oversee resident room assignments, room keys, check-in and check-out procedures, room changes, room furniture, common area furniture, and appliances. Within the residence halls students will meet our Hall Tour Ambassadors (HTAs) who are responsible for providing tours to prospective students throughout the year. Department of Residence Life Residence Life is responsible for the education, development, and continual engagement of the students living on the Daytona Beach campus. Residence Life strives to create an environment where residential students can achieve success in and out of the classroom. Their staff is committed to providing students with the resources to help make the college experience a successful one. Resident Advisors are undergraduate & graduate students who live with a designated group of residents on a residence hall wing/floor. These students are available to help with personal and academic concerns, plan social and educational activities for the residents, and leaders on campus. About the Residence Halls Approximately 2,000 students live in ERAU-managed residence halls. Many of our residence halls are just a few steps away from dining areas, laundry facilities, campus convenience/book stores, recreational facilities, and more. The convenience of living on campus and access to many university services are just a part of what makes living in the residence halls a great experience, especially for new students. For a description of each residence hall with pictures, floorplans, and rates, please visit

4 - PLANNING YOUR TRANSITION TO CAMPUS What should I bring? We encourage students to bring personal items, with a few exceptions, that will make them feel at home. Students who are confirmed to live in university housing may want to contact their prospective roommate(s) before bringing large items such as TVs. Although the residence halls are comfortable, space is limited. What about cooking/ appliances? The University provides a microwave and small refrigerator in each room of all first-year residence halls. Students should not bring additional large appliances. Coffee makers and hot water pots are the only cooking appliances allowed in firstyear halls. Upper-class halls have kitchenette areas which allow certain other items. Single bed/mattress (extra long 80 inches) Individual desk with chair Dresser Lockable box or lockable drawer Window coverings Wood simulated laminate flooring Air Condition units Small refrigerator and microwave Cable TV outlet Internet outlet (with exception of Chanute Complex) Wireless internet access (with exception of Chanute Complex) What should I not bring? Alcohol or drug paraphernalia Candles or lighting fixtures with open flames Cooking appliances except those previously listed Darts and dart boards Equipment for constructing lofts (University Housing provides equipment for lofts in some areas) Fireworks or explosives Halogen lamps Hookahs/Sheesha/Incense Pets of any kind (with exception of fish in an aquarium of 10 gallons or less) Subwoofers/Surround sound systems (Be mindful of the space you will be sharing with others. Please do not bring speakers larger than desktop speakers.) Waterbeds/Mattresses Weapon or weapon replicas of any kind, including but not limited to firearms, paint ball guns, airsoft guns, knives, & archery equipment Wireless Routers (with exception of Chanute Complex) Mattress pad and pillow Blanket/bedspread Towels Laundry basket or bag Desk lamp Alarm clock Personal cell phone or calling card TV cable cord Pad lock for security box/drawer Cleaning supplies (to clean your room and bathroom) Small vacuum or dustpan/broom Our residence hall rooms contain extra-long beds that require special linens to comfortably fit the mattresses. The Embry- Riddle Resident Student Association (E.R.R.S.A.) has arranged to conveniently provide these extra-long linens to our residents. Students will receive a letter and order form in the mail that describes the products and special value packages that are available. Make sure to order by the deadline to ensure that you will receive your linens at home before you depart for campus. For more details, please call or check out this website: click on the red tab that reads order linens located in the top right corner of the screen. Proceeds from the linen sales go toward funding student leadership development programs.

LIVING WITH A ROOMMATE- 5 Roommate & Building Assignments New incoming students are matched with roommates using the information each student provides on the Roommate Preference section of the Housing contract. We anticipate that all students are honest in answering these questions as our office attempts to match students together who have answered these questions in similar ways. We also attempt to group students who are in the same degree program together in residence hall areas. We do not guarantee a perfect roommate match, but we do try to match students with other students who have similar interests and academic goals. New students who have submitted a housing contract and housing deposit will be notified of their building assignment prior to beginning of August. Notification will include the roommate s name, , and phone number (if available). Students are encouraged to contact their roommate before leaving for ERAU. Roommates are assigned without regard to race, creed, or national origin. ERAU encourages and supports an appreciation of diversity among students. Changes to room assignments will not be made due to content from Facebook, Twitter, or any other social networking website. Establishing A Healthy Living Space Before Coming to Campus: In the first few days of the semester, or before you move in, talk with your roommate and agree on the details of day-to-day living. Things to discuss include visitation, sharing electronics, cleaning schedules, etc. Do not profile your new roommate via online social networking sites or other means. When You Get Here: Remember that there is no such thing as a perfect roommate. Getting used to living with anyone is an adjustment, especially if you ve had your own room at home. Remember that your roommate is adjusting to living with someone too, you! Keep in mind that a good roommate relationship takes work from both of you. If your roommate is doing something that bothers you, talk it out and let your roommate know how you feel. It is important to communicate with your roommate in order to avoid confusion & conflict. Keep an open mind, and make the most of your time in the residence halls!

6 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Semester Breaks & Holidays ERAU residence halls are open during holidays throughout the year. Any student who stays during the winter break between fall and spring semester must complete a Break Housing Form and be approved by University Housing. There is a cost associated with staying in your residence hall room during the winter break. Between all other semesters, all students must vacate the residence halls unless they are continuing with an ERAU flight course (overflight) and have been approved or have received special permission to stay due to extenuating circumstances. For further information, please contact University Housing. Students who are returning to housing for the spring semester may leave their belongings in their assigned room while they are away for the winter break. During the breaks between summer B & fall and spring & summer A, students who are returning for the following semester may leave personal belongings in their room with written permission from University Housing. Students who are not returning to housing for the next semester must remove all personal belongings from the residence hall. Students who go home for the summer term(s) must remove all belongings. Although the University does not provide storage for students personal belongings, there are several private storage businesses near campus. Many students share storage units for the summer months. Living on Campus Beyond Your First Year Services Provided New first-year students are required to live on campus their first year at Embry- Riddle. ERAU requires all first year students who are 20 years of age or younger to live on campus for their first year. To fill out a housing contract, visit The housing contract will need to be filled out for each year the student wishes to remain on campus. Campus housing is guaranteed but not required for rising sophomores who submit the housing contract by the established contract deadline. Students who wish to live in housing their sophomore year must submit a contract on time and participate in the room selection lottery that takes place in the spring semester. Information and instructions will be distributed to student s ERAU . It is the student s responsibility to sign up and follow the process for securing a room in housing for his/her second year. Campus housing spaces for juniors and seniors are limited. Juniors and seniors are assigned to housing on a space-available basis and are selected through a lottery process. While every effort is made to house transfer students who want to live on-campus we cannot guarantee housing due to space limitations. Your housing rate includes a wide range of services in addition to the space and furnishings provided: All utilities are covered including: internet access, cable TV, and laundry services Courtesy phones and emergency phones are available throughout campus Lounges, study rooms, and other common areas are located in each area and cleaned regularly All residence hall common areas and bathrooms will be cleaned by university custodial staff throughout the year (students are responsible for cleaning all other areas of their space)

OTHER INFORMATION - 9 Safety & Security ERAU seeks to provide students with the safest possible environment while living on-campus. Always remember that your safety and security is a shared responsibility, so take advantage of the crime prevention and personal safety programs available to you. ERAU Campus Safety Personnel patrol the campus regularly and work closely with the Residence Life staff to educate students about their safety. Each residential facility is equipped with modern fire safety equipment and door locks. All rooms in buildings are also equipped with security boxes, or lockable drawers which allow students to bring their own locks, safely storing small valuables. Staying Safe On-Campus Always keep your EAGLE-card with you. If you misplace your card you can get a temporary one from Campus Safety, which is open 24 hours per day/7 days a week. ERAU is an open campus; all residents should be cautious of unfamiliar people. Do not open your door if you do not recognize the person on the other side and always call Campus Safety & Security if you suspect danger. Students are strongly encouraged to keep their doors locked, even for a short time, and insist that roommates do the same. Bring a good quality lock for your individual lock box. These boxes can be used to store small valuables such as wallets, keys, jewelry, etc. Mark large valuables such as computers, laptops, or televisions with an identification number. Contact the ERAU Campus Safety & Security Department for assistance. Remember to record this number for your reference. Students who bring bicycles are required to register their bike with Parking and Traffic Services. Additionally, students are encouraged to purchase a durable locking device, such as a Kryptonite U-Lock. Parking and Traffic Services also offers the Lease a Lock program, which allows students to rent these locks. Report lost/stolen keys to Housing & Residence Life immediately. Take note that campus is equipped with several emergency Blue Light call boxes which students can use in case of an emergency. When activated, the call boxes connect students with the Campus Safety Office. Can I Bring a Car? Students (including first-year students) who wish to bring a car to campus may do so. All students must register their vehicles and purchase a vehicle registration decal for a $60 annual fee (fall through summer semesters). Students are encouraged to complete their vehicle registration online via ERNIE before coming to the Parking Services Office to receive their decal. Separate parking areas are designated for residential students, commuter students, and faculty/staff. There are usually enough parking spaces for all students who have cars, though parking may be limited in certain areas. Residential students should expect a 5-10 minute walk from parking areas to the residence halls. You may call Campus Safety at for a safety walking escort. Do I Need A Car? Not necessarily. Many students choose not to bring a car their first and second years at ERAU. Unless you plan to work off campus, you probably will not need a car. All of the services, supplies, and activities that most students need are available on campus. In addition, there are shopping malls and fast food restaurants within walking distance to campus. Bicycles are a popular means to navigate campus and the surrounding areas.
