3 Global Geography 12 GGS12 General Curriculum Outcomes Humanity has reached a most, (if not the most), challenging moment in its occupation of earth and that knowledge originates in technologies most fully developed in the last five or six decades. The Global Geography 12 program provides students with a variety of learning opportunities to improve their understanding of the world around them and how internal and external factors affect it. It is intended that students will experience personal development and responsibility in addition to skills necessary for success in other Social Studies courses. There are a number of key concepts to keep in mind as students progress through units. Some are as follows: 1. One needs to develop an understanding of the interdependence of nations, in time and in space. 2. Develop frameworks within which to consider global conditions and global issues. 3. Seek and find answers to the question: How did the world arrive at it current state at the close of the 20 th century?

THE BIG PICTURE OVERALL VIEW Explain the concept of global village Analyze the impact of communication and transportation on a global village Identify and explain the 6 models of human/environment interaction Identify and explain the 6 core concepts of geography and their applicability to the course 2. THE POPULATION BOMB AN EXAMINATION OF TRENDS IN POPULATION PATTERNS Provide and explanation of world population over time Define relevant terms, which are used in studying characteristics Evaluate the roles of culture and economics in population growth Assess the role of women as it relates to population growth Examine and interpret global population distribution patterns Define development and developing & less developed countries Identify the factors that determine standard of living Evaluate the capacity of the earth to sustain present and future populations Identify and assess possible solutions to the global population crisis 3. URBANIZATION ISSUES FACING OUR MEGA CITIES Define urban and rural Differentiate between urban growth and urbanization Outline the history of city growth Identify urban trends & patterns through the analysis of graphs, statistics, and maps Define and differentiate between cities, megacities, and megalopolis Analyze rural-urban migration patterns (push & pull factors) Differentiate between urbanization factors in developed and developing countries Examine and evaluate problems and solutions related to urban spawl 4. GLOBALIZATION A BLESSING OR A CURSE?
5 Differentiate between renewable and non-renewable resources Describe global patterns of resource distribution Explain the roles of culture, politics, technology and economics in resource use Examine global patterns of resource consumption Identify the 4 lwas of ecology, and identify situations where they may be applicable 5. TROPICAL FOREST DESTRUCTION Differentiate between hunger and malnutrition Analyze patterns of global food production and consumption Explain and interpret the Hunger Cycle Explain the evolution, success and drawbacks of the Green Revolution Explain the concept of biodiversity Evaluate the proliferation of cash crops Examine the difference between MDC and LDC cas crops Identify areas of the world where hunger and famine are a problem Examine the politics of famine and famine relief 6. DESERTIFICATION Explain the concept of sustainable development Explain the four domains of sustainable development Using a variety of tools, including but not limiting to, the internet, maps, graphs and charts, evaluate a country s progress towards a sustainable economy 7. A LOOK TO THE FUTURE - SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. Show how each period of industrial expansion has contributed to the current state of the global economy Analyze our current state of industrialization in relation to other economies Explain the four types of economy systems Explain the five stages of economics development
6 Explain the three sectors of any economy, and explain how they reflect the state of a nations development Explain GNP Analyze various countries economic growth, and categorize nations according to GNP Explain the Human Development Index, and show how it is used to evaluate standard of living in various countries Examine the rift between wealthy nations and poorer nations Explain factors of specialization in trade Analyze the environmental impacts of global trades Compare and contrast the various present day global trading blocs Analyze Canada s trading relationship with various global regions Demonstrate the unequal balance of power between MDC and LDC countries
