1 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 1 Firstly, we want to verify how much memory you have in your system, so go to START SETTINGS CONTROL PANEL This screen will display under Computer the type processor, speed, and memory size. In my case it is only 512MB of RAM (this is my desk pc not an HSSM server!). I know I know. I need more RAM. Blame my management!

2 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 2 Now we want to verify your Java settings: Go to START --- SETTINGS --- CONTROL PANEL and double click on Java The first file is the General tab.

3 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 3 At this tab you can click on About to view the Version and build level of Java 1.5 To view the Network settings, click Network Settings At this screen, you can either choose to use the browser settings, or customize the browser settings. Typically Use Browser Settings is left as the default. Note: If you uninstall and reinstall Java multiple times, it is possible the link to IE may be lost. In this rare case it is helpful to select use proxy server and change the address, and port to match your IE browser settings (also select bypass server for local addresses).

4 Then click on Advanced Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 4 Once more you would set these settings to match those in IE.Java caching is set with the Temporary Files option by clicking on SETTINGS

5 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 5 The default is unlimited. For the purposes of HSSM it is recommended to leave this as the default. If you have a disk shortage, then you should at least leave a Maximum of 150Mb and check Maximum. Clicking on View Applications will show you which applications are using the User Cache. There is typically not a reason to view this option. The View Applets option will show you which java applets have been used and cached recently. You will see a lot of APPIQ/HSSM related ones. Typically there is not a reason to view this as well.

6 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 6 The next tab is to select whether or not you want automatic updates for Java This should be disabled. ESPECIALLY on the HSSM server as it is important to control the version of Java run in an HSSM environment. Therefore, uncheck this box:

This is where you will go to set the Java run-time settings and the version of Java to use: To view and set the java run-time parameters, click on VIEW Place the cursor in the Java Runtime Parameters Box and set the value accordingly. For HSSM Tuning, The -Xmx maximum heap size should be set to 1/4th of the machine's physical memory (up to 1 GB max). The default is only 64Mb which is inefficient for HSSM. For example, in an environment where the HOST machine has 1Gb of RAM, then the Xmx should be set as follows to ¼ 1024 or Xmx256m. For a 2G machine the Xmx should be ¼ 2048 or Xmx512m: Note that the values ARE case sensitive, and it should be Xmx512m and NOT xmx512m. Note: If you are requested by TRC to set additional Java Runtime Parameters, they should be separated by a space

8 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 8 According to Java BUG ID there exists a bug where the Java VM will exit when it cannot expand the memory heap, rather than throw an out of Memory exception error, that would allow the application to continue and recover. The workaround (as this bug is still in progress by SUN) is to set the Xms equal to the Xmx value By clicking on view (below) you will select the Java Application Run-Time settings based on the Version, User, and the System

9 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 9 As you can see, this system has java and java 1.5 installed. However 1.5 is enabled for USER currently logged into Windows. Clicking on the System tab will select which version of Java is utilized for the entire system by default. Closing out of this and going back to the Security tab

10 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 10 Clicking on the Certificates tab will display the APPIQ certificate. There is not a reason to select this tab for normal HSSM operations. The advanced tab contains a lot of options as well:

12 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 12 These options are left at the defaults for the purposes of HSSM. TRC support may request that logging be enabled as well as the console during troubleshooting, and this is where you would enable/disable them. Enabling the console will display a window like the following once you close and restart your browser. *note: that this window will not display until Java is accessed. Once accessed it will display A LOT of messages.

13 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 13 The advantage of enabling this feature, is if you are receiving Java errors during an HSSM operation, you may enable logging, then display the console; select copy; then paste the contents into notepad and it back to TRC

14 Java 1.5 Plug-In Settings on Windows by Ben Patridge 4/17/06 14 Lastly, it is important to ensure your Browser is configured to use Java. Start Internet Explorer (IE) and select TOOL --- INTERNET OPTIONS
