Society has set clear goals for Axpo: provision of a secure electricity supply, environmentally responsible electricity production, cost-effective electricity prices, top-class energy services and attractive jobs. We are setting the necessary course today to ensure the electricity supply of tomorrow. Renewable energy, an area in which we are investing heavily in Switzerland and abroad, is a central factor in this regard. Hydroelectricity, wind and biomass, as well as solar power systems in optimum locations, are the technologies of the future. As we move along this path, Axpo s tried and tested nuclear power plants will ensure a sustainable and climate-friendly supply of energy to its customers in Switzerland.

Electricity is the key energy of the future. Despite savings measures and efforts to improve efficiency, electricity consumption in Switzerland will increase over the coming years. To ensure that Switzerland continues to enjoy sufficient electricity in the future, Axpo is investing on a major scale to expand its power plants and distribution grids. Electricity consumption in Switzerland has grown at a rate of almost two percent a year over the last ten years. This trend will continue because the Swiss population and economy are growing, and because we have more and more computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices. Climate change is another factor behind growing demand. We will have to replace oil and petrol with electricity in the decades ahead, for heating as well as for transportation. We estimate that electricity s share of total energy consumption in Switzerland will grow from 23 percent today to 40 percent in Development of electricity consumption per capita in kwh Source: Federal Statistical Office Electricity consumption is continuing to rise, but a different trend is developing when it comes to electricity supply. Less and less electricity is being generated in Switzerland. In the foreseeable future, we will have to start doing without electricity from nuclear power plants until now the backbone of Switzerland s energy supplies along with hydroelectric power. Responsible action means security of supply Rising consumption and falling production we are facing a problem in the form of an electricity supply gap. This is a major challenge for Axpo, which we are addressing through a flexible production and procurement strategy as well as substantial investments particularly in renewable energy: Hydroelectric plants will become (and remain) key production sources in Switzerland especially, but also in neighbouring countries. New renewable energy sources continue to be the key focal point of expansion. The priorities include biomass conversion, small scale hydroelectricity generation and, over the longer term, geothermal extraction in Switzerland, as well as wind power abroad and solar power systems in suitable locations. By 2030, Axpo aims to have invested some CHF six billion in new renewable energy sources alone

Development of Axpo production portfolio More renewable energy, greater international share Abroad Procurement contracts and production abroad New offshore wind-farm construction abroad New onshore wind-farm construction abroad New gas-fired combined-cycle construction abroad Gas-fired combined-cycle plants Italy (existing) New large-scale hydropower construction abroad Nuclear energy imports Switzerland New gas-fired combined-cycle construction New biomass/biogas construction New geothermal construction New photovoltaic construction Nuclear power (existing) New hydropower concessions New small-scale hydropower construction New renewable energies (existing) Hydropower (existing) Current portfolio Portfolio 2030 Energy efficiency is being increasingly promoted at Axpo s own plants and in dealings with customers. To make the move to alternative energy sources without jeopardising the reliability and sustainability of supplies, Axpo is focusing on its tried-and-tested nuclear energy sources and investing in the safety of these plants. To be able to meet its major challenges, Axpo has set itself up with an organisational structure geared entirely towards efficiency and flexibility. Power plant management and trading activities have been combined and optimally dovetailed. The new structure pools together the group s expertise, shortens decision-making channels and makes the best possible use of synergies. This allows Axpo to respond more quickly and flexibly to challenges posed by markets and policies. International activities becoming increasingly important Switzerland has a privileged position in the European electricity market due to its geographical location and the flexible availability of its hydroelectricity resources. Axpo actively exploits these advantages. Our international networks and electricity trading activities contribute to the security of supply and cost-effective electricity prices in Switzerland. Axpo is active in Europe as a successful energy trader and has branches in more than 20 European countries. We are building our own production, transport and storage capacity in the relevant markets. This also includes investments in renewable energy in particular, such as hydroelectricity, wind and solar energy.

Environmental challenge 12 13

Axpo utilises watercourses, mountains and valleys for the production and distribution of energy. This has an impact on the environment. At Axpo, we consider it our duty to play an active role in protecting the environment. We do this by discussing our projects with residents and environmental protection groups and by incorporating their concerns as far as possible. We also do this through our commitment to a stable climate. Thanks to hydroelectric power, renewable energy and our tried-and-tested nuclear energy sources, the electricity we produce in Switzerland is virtually CO 2 -free.

Climate change necessitates a prudent approach to energy use and a reduction in the output of CO 2 and other greenhouse gases. Axpo contributes to a better climate in three ways. Firstly, electricity is a prerequisite for climate protection because it facilitates the replacement of oil, gas and petrol for heating and transport. Secondly, we are one of the most environmentally friendly electricity producers in Europe thanks to our Swiss electricity mix. And thirdly, Axpo is introducing measures to improve its own energy efficiency and that of its customers. Environmental audits for all systems Axpo aims for complete transparency regarding the environmental impact of its electricity production. To ensure this, we undertake comprehensive environmental audits. Not only do we catalogue the emissions released during the operation of our power plants, but we also include the emissions resulting from the construction of power plants and those arising from the acquisition of fuel and the disposal of waste products. We have already undertaken this type of comprehensive environmental audit for the Beznau nuclear power plant, the Kompogas facil ity in Otelfingen and the Wildegg-Brugg and Löntsch hydroelectric power plants with very positive results. Additional audits of this type will follow. In addition, Axpo has created an inventory of the greenhouse gas emissions of the group as a whole. This demonstrates the pioneering role Axpo has taken in Switzerland. We believe in fully informing our stakeholders about the environmental impact of our activities. At the same time, we gain valuable insight into the concrete improvements we can make in our own company. Environmental protection concerns are central The construction of the Limmern pumped-storage plant is a good example of why it is important for us at Axpo to understand and take on board environmental protection concerns at an early stage. From the outset, we discussed the environmental impact of the construction process with an advisory stakeholder group and analysed potential countermeasures. As a result, we have been able to find compromises that respect environmental protection concerns as well as the aim of achieving the highest possible electricity output. Climate protection and energy efficiency are also important issues for our customers. This is where our energy efficiency services can help. Axpo s Energy Check is a tool that can help companies identify their energy savings potential while Axpo s CO 2 service helps companies to calculate their emissions (i. e. their carbon footprint), and then reduce or neutralise this output

Electricity is the lifeblood of modern society. It is essential for a cup of coffee in the morning, a train ride, for light and heating. For machinery in factories and for computers in offices. And for our ever-increasing plethora of home electronic devices. We supply the power for our quality of life every day, around the clock.

By ensuring the supply of safe and reliable electricity at competitive prices, Axpo makes a contribution to quality of life, prosperity and in concrete terms the retention of jobs. However, we do not see ourselves as a mere service provider. We wish to engage with society. Which is why we are pursuing an active dialogue with all stakeholder groups regarding Switzerland s future energy supplies. Together with its partner companies, Axpo delivers electricity to about three million people in Switzerland around the clock. In Northeastern Switzerland, the cantonal electricity utilities of the cantons of Aargau, Zurich, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau and both cantons of Appenzell buy electricity for local distribution from Axpo. Approximately two-thirds of the energy distributed by Axpo is produced in Switzerland and one-third is produced abroad. In dialogue to find tomorrow s solutions We firmly believe that dialogue is essential to find solutions to the energy problems of tomorrow, no matter how different the perspectives may be. For this reason, we engage extensively in debates about the future of energy provision in Switzerland. We participate in discussions at all levels and with all vested stakeholders using a number of communication channels. Axpo has developed special communication tools for different stakeholder groups. In particular, we value direct dialogue with the general public, especially with people who are critical of Axpo. Comprehensive social commitment Around 500 social, cultural and sporting projects and institutions receive sponsorship and support from Axpo each year. Football is one of Axpo s main areas of focus in this regard. In addition to sponsoring top professional clubs, Axpo supports regional and youth football as well as women s football. Axpo also underlines its affinity to nature and attachment to the country of Switzerland as a whole through its partnership with the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), the Four Springs Trail through the Gotthard massif, and numerous regional events and projects. Axpo has a special commitment to children and young people. Axpo s involvement in the Children s University, Zurich (Kinder-Universität Zürich), Kindercity Volketswil, the children s laboratory of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne demonstrates our support for institutions that facilitate access for children and young people to a world of new discoveries in a fun-filled manner. Axpo s dedicated kids camps for football-mad girls and boys are enjoying ever-increasing popularity. Together with Plusport, the umbrella organisation for Swiss disabled sport, we are also committed to helping young people with physical disabilities. And Axpo s support for the charity Winterhilfe Schweiz underlines our commitment to making a difference for underprivileged children and young people

The Axpo Group belongs to its customers. Which is why the profits that Axpo makes are returned to the public coffers. For this arrangement to work, Axpo must also operate successfully in the European market in addition to Switzerland. As an energy trader with its own assets, Axpo is ideally positioned in this respect.

Axpo has a mandate to provide for the people of Switzerland. We deliver reliable, environmentally responsible and costeffective electrical energy that powers our society and economy. In Europe, we are there to assist our customers in numerous energy trading markets and through specific energy services. Electricity production, trading, sales and services are all grouped together under one roof at Axpo. We provide a major portion of the electricity supply in Switzerland, around the clock. Situated at the heart of Europe, Switzerland is no electricity island but a component part of the international network. Axpo acknowledges this fact through its presence in almost all the major markets in Europe. As a successful energy trader, we offer our customers energy products and services tailored to their individual requirements. We own or hold shares in power plants and have concluded long-term energy supply contracts with electricity and gas producers. In addition, we are involved in important power plant and utility projects, such as the Global Tech 1 offshore wind farm off the German North Sea coast, and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline a natural gas pipeline project that will contribute to the diversification and security of Europe s natural gas supply. Profit for the public Axpo Holding AG is the holding company of the Axpo Group and is wholly owned by the cantons of Northeastern Switzerland. This means that Axpo is indirectly owned by the people, who in turn are our electricity customers. As a result, the profits that Axpo makes are returned to the public coffers in the form of fees, taxes and dividends. Or the profits are reinvested in the expansion and optimisation of our future energy supply which is also to the benefit of our community.
