The birth of a phenomenon Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in As a child, he was beset by illnesses such as rickets and asthma, which left his body in a weakened state. Determined to overcome his frailty, he developed physical strength through exercise and bodybuilding. The results were so astounding that by the age of 14 he was modelling for anatomy charts. Inspired by his personal success and drawing from Eastern influences, such as yoga, Zen meditation and martial arts, along with gymnastics, diving and boxing, he developed a series of exercises that focused on the mind-body connection to create strength and flexibility without adding bulk. These exercises lie at the core of the discipline that has become known as Pilates. Trademarks or registered trademarks of Merrithew Corporation, used under license.
