3 140 YEARS OF HELPING BUSINESSES GROW Records show that classes in science, navigation and astronomy were delivered by the Town Council within the Town Hall in The first Technical Institute was built in 1898 and this grew over the next 40 years to include further technical courses and art. The Second World War saw the building demolished by enemy action which effectively rendered the Technical College homeless until, in 1955, plans were drawn up for the new Technical College to be built on the existing site. The buildings were completed in summer 1965 and are still in use to this day. During the last few years, the college has seen the building of the Cockerell Centre, the Horizon Building and, most recently, the complete refurbishment of the Tower Block in From small beginnings in 1874, Lowestoft College now delivers courses to thousands of students and trains over 650 apprentices each year. 01

We have a wide choice of apprenticeships available to suit all industries and sectors and currently train over 650 apprentices each year. Our tutors and assessors are industry experts in their fields, working closely with employers to ensure that training is relevant to their business. We have a dedicated Employer Services team and from the moment you get in touch, we provide support and advice every step of the way. 5 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT WILL AN APPRENTICESHIP INVOLVE? The training will vary according to the type of apprenticeship, but may include the following components: Competence based element Maths, English and ICT Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Knowledge based element Employment Rights and Responsibilities WHAT LEVELS OF APPRENTICESHIP ARE AVAILABLE? We offer apprenticeships (level 2) and advanced apprenticeships (level 3) in a variety of subjects. Higher apprenticeships (level 4) are available in some areas. HOW MUCH DOES AN APPRENTICE COST? Like all employees, apprentices must receive a wage relevant to the job that they are doing. There is also the cost of the supervision, support and mentoring that you will need to put in place to support them. The apprenticeship national minimum wage is 3.30 per hour*. The cost of training for year old apprentices is fully funded by the government, however, if the apprentice is aged 19 or over an employer contribution is expected. Please contact us for further details. IS THERE ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO EMPLOYERS? The Employer Services team will advise on grants available and eligibility criteria. HOW CAN I RECRUIT AN APPRENTICE? The Employer Services team will help you to find the best match for your organisation and assist with recruitment, including advertising, job descriptions, candidate matching and interviewing however much support you need. *Correct at time of printing 03

6 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CAN EXISTING EMPLOYEES BECOME AN APPRENTICE? Yes, apprenticeships are a valuable and cost effective way of training or re-skilling existing employees. IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF APPRENTICES AN EMPLOYER CAN HAVE? No; employers can take on as many apprentices as they can support. WHERE DO APPRENTICESHIPS TAKE PLACE? Most of the time is spent in the workplace, with additional training taking place at college, either on a day or block release basis. Some apprenticeships are delivered solely in the workplace, with college attendance only necessary for English, Maths and ICT updating. HOW LONG DOES THE TRAINING LAST? Our apprenticeships range from 1-4 years depending on the level and subject. HOW WILL AN APPRENTICE BENEFIT MY ORGANISATION? Having an apprentice in your organisation will: Improve productivity Reduce training costs Assist with succession planning Fill skills gaps, including specialist skills specific to your industry Make your business more competitive Reduce recruitment costs Motivate staff and reduce staff turnover Provide a significant return on investment We have a good working relationship with staff at the college and they are always on hand if we have any issues. 7 APPRENTICESHIP LEVELS EXPLAINED Apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to ensure a committed and competent workforce. Lowestoft College can work in partnership with you to create a bespoke training programme suitable for the needs of both your business and your apprentice. We currently offer three levels of Apprenticeship: INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2 APPRENTICESHIPS An Intermediate Apprenticeship is equivalent to five good GCSE passes. Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2, Functional Skills and, in most cases, a knowledge-based qualification relevant to their chosen career, such as a BTEC First Diploma and Certificate. Completion of an Intermediate Apprenticeship equips the apprentice with the skills needed in their chosen career. ADVANCED LEVEL 3 APPRENTICESHIPS An Advanced Apprenticeship is equivalent to two A-Levels. Advanced Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 3, Functional Skills and, in most cases, a knowledge-based certificate such as a BTEC. Level 3 Apprenticeships can include a range of qualifications such as NVQs, BTEC Nationals and Advanced Extension Awards. This higher level apprenticeship equips apprentices with advanced skills. HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS Higher Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 4 and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualification such as a Foundation degree. Apprentices will learn professional skills beneficial to your organisation and can also progress onto further Higher Education. 05

We are supported by Lowestoft College from Apprentice recruitment all the way through to the completion of the course. Our Apprentices regularly feedback on the high quality teaching and state that they feel relaxed and enjoy their study days with the college. The Apprenticeship is relevant to the needs of ECCH and our Apprentices and staff continually thrive while studying and developing. Many of our apprentices have stayed on within our organisation and are developing in a wide variety of career paths, including nursing, engineering, administration, IT and Finance. Within the NHS there is a wide choice of career paths to choose from and we always welcome a diverse range of applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and experience as each apprentice has something different to offer. In return we seek to develop apprentices beyond their apprenticeship programme through in-house training and coaching. It is important to develop people at the start of their career as this generally helps to develop staff members committed to your organisation.
