The completely sealed design and the individual sealing for each module enable a uniform lubricant filling for all mounting positions. Hollow shafts The standard design of the UNIBLOC worm gearboxes SI features hollow shafts in marketable sizes. For large scale serial requirements the gearbox design offers the possibility to include far larger hollow shaft bores. 8 info UNIBLOC Technical Explanations Torques The load limits for continuous and uniform operation are defined by the maximum permissible output torques M a max. The correct gearbox selection is done according to section Gearbox selection taking into account the service factors. The drives can withstand the ultimate limit torques M grenz at rest or shortly in operation without being damaged. The ultimate limit torques M grenz are the absolute maximum limit and must not be exceeded even for peak torque conditions. All ratios are integral except 7,5 : 1. All worms of the UNIBLOC range have a right-inclination which determines the direction of rotation. Ratio range 5 7, Same ratio range for all 4 gearbox sizes Efficiency The high efficiencies of the UNIBLOC range are achieved by special smooth tooth flanks and standard synthetic lubrication. The efficiency of newly commissioned worm gearboxes increases during initial operation up to the rated efficiency by the running-in process of the worm gearing. The power and torque figures listed in the selection tables account for the rated efficiency η of run-in worm gears. The efficiency of wormgears increases with the input speed owing to the hydrodynamic lubrication within the gearing. When starting from rest at first the lesser start-up efficiency η a is effective. This must be considered when sizing the motor for applications that require starting under load. Following table shows standard figures for the start-up efficiency ηa depending on the ratio. The gearboxes are maintenance-free and completely sealed, without oil-plugs. Lubricant : CLP PG 680 DIN SK 1SI 31 SK 1SI 40 SK 1SI 50 SK 1SI 63 Filling 30ml 55ml 95 ml 180 ml Ambient conditions The natural corrosion resistant aluminium-oxyd skin of all UNIBLOC drives enables indoor and outdoor operation. Contact with aggressive and corrosive media ( gases, acidic and caustic fluids, salts etc ) must be avoided. The UNIBLOC drives are suitable for operation at ambient temperatures of 25 C to +60 C. At low temperatures the motor requires a higher torque for start-up because of viscous lubricant. G1033/2002 8

9 UNIBLOC Technical Explanations info Selflocking In a selflocking condition any backdriving torque at the output side cannot turn back the gearbox from rest in any direction. Selflocking from operation is called selfbraking. As soon as the motor is turned off the gearbox comes to an immediate stop ( no noticeable slowing down period ). These characteristics of some wormdrives can make a brake obsolete in certain applications. When changing load-direction resulting in backdriving and with a mass-acceleration-factor m af > 1 ( see section Gearbox selection page 10 ) the selflocking property of a gearbox can cause a sudden jamming or chatter-vibration ( see VDI 2158 ). For such applications non-selflocking gearboxes must be selected. The figures are calculated for forces acting at midpoint of output shaft. The figures F Q are valid for plug-in shafts , , , , , , , The figures F QF are valid for the long plug-in shafts , , , of the B5 flange design. For forces acting midpoint inside the hollow shaft the permissible radial load is 2x F Q. The figures listed for permissible radial loads account for worst direction of force, bearings, housings and plug-in shafts. The hollow shafts of the UNIBLOC gearboxes are supported by especially large ball bearings. Therefore UNIBLOC drives also have an axial load capacity in addition to the permissible radial load. 10 info UNIBLOC Technical Explanations Gearbox selection The selection tables list the resulting output-torques M a, the output speeds and the service factors f B based on UNIBLOC worm gearboxes in combination with 4-pole standard 3-phase motors. The service factor indicates the safety of the gearbox at the given input power. Each application has specific loading requirements such as peak loads, frequent start-ups, intermittent duty and extreme ambient temperatures. All calling for a certain minimum service factor f Bmin to ensure reliable operation. The unit picked from the selection tables should have a service factor equal to or larger the minimum service factor f Bmin required. The selection tables n 1 =2800/1400/900/500 min -1 can be used in case a motor is fitted other than a 4-pole standard 3-phase motor. These selection tables are based on a service factor f B = 1,0. Observing the minimum service factor f Bmin the motor power installed must not exceed P emax / f Bmin. The required minimum service factor f Bmin for an application is calculated as : f Bmin = f B0 f B1 f B2 Factor f B0 accounts for the of loading A, B or C, the start/stop frequency and the daily operating time. Factor f B1 accounts for different ambient temperatures. Factor f B2 accounts for intermittent duty cycle. The following diagrams are used for defining the individual factors f B0, f B1 and f B2. 11 UNIBLOC Technical Explanations info NORD 3-phase motors The motors for the module IEC 3-phase motor are TEFC 4- pole squirrel-cage 3-phase motors from NORD production. These motors are equally suitable for DOL and VVVF operation. The motors have standard flanges. On request B5 flanges, single-phase motors, 2-pole motors, polechanging motors, encoders, auxiliary fans, ATEX and CUS/UL conform motors and other motor-options are available. Please order separate motor catalogue M7000. Motors covered by the CEMEP agreement comply to efficiency class EFF2. The NORD brakemotors are 3-phase motors with integrated spring-loaded failsafe brakes. The brake torque can be reduced to 50% nominal value by an adjustment ring. The standard brake-coil voltage is 205VDC. A bridge rectifier inside the terminal box allows for easy brake connection to motor 3-phase supply 230V/Y400V. On request different coil voltages, different brake torques, stainless friction plates, higher types of enclosure, dust protection rings, manual release and other options are available.
