The use of geokoax geothermal probes allowed for a reduction of the drilling depth by 35% compared to the original design with duplex probes. This led to a saving of 4,920 of feet drilled (Source: tewag GmbH), and around 25% of drilling costs. Upgrade of an apartment block in an area with drilling depth restrictions (100 kw, 28,5 RT) As part of the complete retrofitting of the apartment block dating from the 1960 s, the existing oil heating was replaced with a geothermal heating system. It fully meets heating requirements of 100 kw (28,5 RT). The redevelopment plan initially focused on duplex probes. Since the area lies in a water protection zone with a drilling depth restriction of 128ft / 39m, the system had to be changed: The required heat output could only be guaranteed with geokoax probes with a reduction of 47% in drilling length and 36% lower investment costs. The conversion to geothermal energy has resulted in annual savings of 69% in terms of CO 2 emissions and 73% in terms of operating costs. The system generated a positive return on investment after just 5 years!
