3 1. IMAGE RESIZING WITH PIC RESIZE This guide will show you how to resize and crop images using Pic Resize. Pic Resize is a free online tool for image manipulation found at It can be used on any computer without needing to purchase or install any software. 1.1 Select picture The first step is to select the image that your would like to modify. You can either select an image from your computer or one from the internet. If using one from the internet, make sure you have permission to use the image. To select one from your computer, either drag the image to the white box or click on browse and select the image from the folder it is stored in. If dragging the image, the white box will go green when the image is in the right place. To select and image from the web, click on the From Web button in the top right and type or paste in the web address of the image. Once this is done, click on Continue (Resize, Crop & Special Effects) to edit the image. It will then take a few seconds while it uploads the image to their server. 1.2 Crop and Rotate Your Picture The next step allows you to crop or rotate your image. This step is optional so you can skip it if you don t need to. To crop the image, click and drag on the image to select the area that you would like to crop to. If you hold down shift, it will select a square area with equal width and height. You can adjust the dimensions by dragging the edges of the selected area. You can move the selected area by dragging from the middle of it. If you want to start over, click on Deselect in the Crop menu. Once you are happy, click on Crop selection in the Crop menu. It will then take a few seconds while it processes the image. If you change your mind after the crop, you can return to the original image by clicking on Revert to Original in the Crop menu. 3

4 If you need to rotate the image, you can click on the required rotation in the Rotate Menu. As with the crop you can return to the original image by clicking on Revert to Original in the Crop menu. 1.3 Resize Your Picture The next step is the resize tool. Again this is optional. If you want to keep your image at the same size, select No change from the Make My Picture drop down menu. If you do want to resize the image there are some other pre-set percentages in the drop down, but to have more control over the final image size, you will probably want to select Custom Size from the drop down. You can then manually enter the width and height values. If you enter both a width and height, you will need to make sure that they are in proportion to the original image or the end result may be squashed or stretched. The best thing to do is enter either a width or a height and it will automatically work out the other value keeping it in proportion. You can select if the value you are entering is a size in pixels or in percentage by selection from the drop down menus. The new crop and resize values are displayed to the right of the Resize Your Picture section so you can check they are correct at each stage. 1.4 Choose Special Effect I would advise not changing anything in this section. Just make sure none is selected and move onto the next section. 1.5 Save As Now that you have finished editing the image, it is time to save it. If it is a photo, make sure that the Image Format is selected as JPG (JPEG) and the JPG Quality is Best. This will make sure that there is no reduction in the quality of your image. If the filesize is coming out too large, then you can select Better instead of Best to reduce it. If you need to make sure that the image is not above a certain filesize, you can enter that size next to Max Filesize. There are 1024 Kilobytes in 1 Megabyte if you need to convert the value between the two. Once all is correct, click on I m Done, Resize My Picture! 4

5 1.6 Results You will now be taken to the results page. They will store your edited image for 20 minutes before deleting it from the server. You can see how long you have remaining on the right half of the webpage. The rest of the right-hand side of the page contains an advert so don t be fooled into clicking on it if it says something like Download in big letters. Everything you need is on the left half of the page! There are four options: View Image You can preview your image in its new dimensions. Resume Edit Clicking on this will return you to the previous screen to allow you to make further changes to your image. Save to Disk This allows you to download you image. Depending upon the web browser you are using this will ask you where you want to save it, or download it to the desktop or your download folder. Save to Web If you want to share your new image straight away, you can select from various Social Networks or use the link they provide to your image. Be aware that selecting Save to Web will store a copy of your image on the Pic Resize webserver. That s it, your image is now edited and ready to use. There are however two further options that may speed up the time it takes to edit your images if you only want to resize and don t need to crop. 1.7 Quick Resize If you just want to resize your image, upload it in the Select Picture section as described above and then instead of clicking Continue, click on Quick Resize in the bottom left. If you change your mind you can click on Return to Normal Mode. You are now presented with fewer options than before. Select or enter the size you want the new image to be in the Make my picture section and amend any other fields, though they can probably be left as they are. Then click on I m Done, Quick Resize My Picture! You will then be returned to the results page described above. If you are going to do this on further images the same size, select the remember my settings for next time checkbox to speed up the process. 5

6 1.8 Multiple Pics If you are going to be editing multiple images the same size, there is an even faster way of processing them in one batch. Click on Multiple Pics in the Select Picture section before you have selected an image. You will now be taken to the Batch Resize page. In the Select Multiple Picture Files section, click on Add Files and you can select all the files you want to edit. To select more than one, hold down the CTRL key while clicking. Click on Open when you have selected them all. They will all appear with the text Ready for Upload. Click on the crosses on the right-hand side to remove any from the upload or click on Cancel All Uploads to remove them all. When you are happy with your selection, click on Upload. This will take a few seconds depending on the speed of your internet connection and the size of the files. A green box will display saying Your pictures are ready to be resized once they have all uploaded. Select or enter the new size for your images in the Make my pictures section and click on Batch Resize! Once they have all been resized, you will reach a confirmation page where you can either select to download a Zip file of all your resized images or you can Reedit you batch if you need to make any further amends. This may come in handy if you wanted all the images resized in two different sizes as you could download the first size and then go back and choose another size to them download them all again. The batch images will remain on the server for 24 hours so you can return to download them at any point in that time if you save the URL or you can share with other people if they need access to those images. When you are done, to remove the images from the server, click on Close Job, I am Happy! 6
