1 Get started When you upload your pictures to Shutterfly, you can do much more than view them. Our workspace offers tools that let you quickly and easily organize your photos as well. We re going to show you the different ways to do so. To begin, sign in to your Shutterfly account. (If you don t already have one, click Sign up at the top of the page.) Then click on the My pictures tab. (Figure 1) Figure 1 By default, your pictures are contained in albums, which themselves are contained within folders. Albums and folders can be found on the left side of the My Pictures page. When you first create a Shutterfly account, any albums that you upload are placed in a default folder called My Albums. (Figure 2) Figure 2 1
2 As you create more and more albums over time, it makes sense to group them into new folders using some logical hierarchy such as same subject or same year. Let s say you want to put all the albums from the various holiday gatherings together in the same place. At the top of the left column, select New folder and from the dialog box create a folder called Holidays. Drag all of your holidayrelated albums into this new folder move them from another folder on the left or from the main workspace in the center of the page. Keep in mind that you can move albums into folders but cannot move folders into other folders. (Figures 3 & 4) Figure 3 Figure 4 Creating a new album is just as simple. Click the New album link at the top-left. From the dialog box, name the album and use the pulldown menu to determine into what folder it should be saved. Then click OK. (Figure 5) Figure 5 2
3 Select pictures and albums To perform actions such as copy or move, you ll need to make sure that the specific pictures or albums have been selected first. To select an album, simply click on the album cover in the main work area. An orange border and a check mark will appear around the album. To de-select, click on the check mark again. (Figure 6) Figure 6 To select pictures, you ll first need to get into album view. Do this by double-clicking on any album from the left column or from the main work area. As with albums, click on each picture to select it the orange border and check box will appear. Select multiple, adjacent images by holding down the Shift key, then clicking on the first and last pictures in the group. If you want to select all the pictures in an album, select the all link at top-right. (Figure 7) Figure 7 To de-select an image, click on the checkbox in the top left corner, or click anywhere on the image while holding down the Ctrl key. To de-select all checked images, click the none link at the top-right of the page. 3
4 Arrange pictures, albums and folders There are a variety of ways to arrange pictures or albums in the My Pictures work area. Arrange pictures To re-arrange pictures within an album, select the pictures to move, then mouse over the Organize pulldown menu in the upper-left corner and select Arrange pictures. In the dialog box, choose a picture number and whether to move the selected pictures before or after that number. The click the OK button. The selected pictures will be moved to that new location within the album. (Figures 8 & 9) Figure 8 Figure 9 4
5 Sort pictures and albums To sort pictures, go to the Sort by pulldown menu at the bottom-left of the main work area. Click on the arrow to sort your pictures by Date taken, Upload order (the default setting), Name, or Custom. (Figure 10) Figure 10 You can also sort albums using the Sort by menu in this case, sort by Creation date, Modified date, Name and Custom. If you arrange either your pictures or albums in a special order through drag-and-drop, your custom settings will be remembered. Even if you try sorting them some other way, you can always return to that special order by selecting Custom. (Figure 11) Figure 11 5
6 Drag-and-drop pictures and albums You can also arrange pictures and albums in the same way you move files from one place to another on your computer desktop: drag-and-drop. To drag-and-drop pictures, place your mouse on the selected image and then drag it to the desired location where you d like to place it. You ll see a green bar that appears just before you drop it into that spot, so you ll know if it s in the right place. (Figure 12) Figure 12 You can also drag a picture directly into any of the albums on the left side of the page. When you do this, a copy of the picture appears in the destination album; the original image remains in the album from which you moved it. (Figure 13) Figure 13 6
7 To drag-and-drop albums within the main work area, drag the selected album and drop it in the desired location a green bar appears just before you drop it into that spot. To move an album from one folder to another, drag from one folder and drop into the desired new folder. 8 Move/copy albums and folders To move or copy pictures and albums, mouse over the picture or album until the arrow icon appears and then click Move to or Copy to (Figures 16 & 17) Figure 16 Figure 17 Whether moving or copying, you ll be asked to what folder or album you d like to place the selected objects. When you select Copy to.., a duplicate is placed in the destination; the original remains where it was. When you select Move to.., the original gets moved to the destination. (Figure 18) Figure 18 8
9 For pictures, there s also a pulldown option called Duplicate. It s a shortcut method for copying a picture within the same album. The duplicated image will appear right next to the original picture unless you have your Sort by option set to Custom. (Figure 19) Figure 19 Delete pictures, albums and folders To delete pictures, select the images you d like removed from your account, then click the trash icon in the upperright corner of the main work area. You can also click the arrow inside the orange box and from the pulldown menu select Delete. (Figure 20) Figure 20 9
10 To delete albums, select the album name on the left, click the arrow for the pulldown menu, and select delete. Or select the album from the main work area, then click the Delete button in the upper-right corner. (Figure 21) Figure 21 To delete folders, highlight the folder on the left, click the arrow for the pulldown menu, and select Delete. (Figure 22) Figure 22 Don t worry about accidentally deleting pictures. In all of the above cases, a dialog box appears before any action is taken, asking you to confirm whether you really want to remove the selected items from your Shutterfly account.
