Premiere Pro CC Workflow Setting up your project In This Section 1. Project Settings 2. Sequence Settings for AVCHD cameras 3. Sequence Settings for P2 cameras 4. Sequence Settings Slideshows 4. Sequence Settings for itouch Devices 5. Media Cache Settings for External Hard Drive Editing Project Settings The first thing that will appear when you launch Premiere Pro is a welcome screen where you can open a recent project, create a new project, navigate to any saved project, or go to help. In this case we are going to create a new project. Click on the New Project Icon. The New Project screen will appear. The important options are the location of the project and the name of the project. It is highly suggested that you create a Premiere Pro Project folder on your computer s hard drive and/or your external hard drive. If a Medill staff member formatted your external drive, then you should already have a Premiere Pro folder. If you re using an external hard drive for your video projects, make sure to save all your materials - raw footage, Premiere Pro projects and project file data etc. - to that hard drive, especially if you re editing with the university s computers. If you re
not saving everything to your hard drive and you move to a different computer, you will not be able to completely reopen your project for editing on that computer. Click on Browse to navigate to and then inside your Premiere Pro Projects folder, click on Make New Folder (this may be worded differently depending upon whether you are using a MAC or PC) and name this folder after your project. Click OK and the Location path should now be to this folder. Name your project and click OK. Scratch Disks are set to the Same as Project by default so these shouldn t need to be changed. Scratch disks are where assets and files that are created during the course of the project are kept. Next you will set up a New Sequence. This is where you tell Premiere Pro what type of footage you are editing with. If you choose the incorrect sequence setting you may need to render your work every time you edit a clip into the timeline. Your choices for sequence and a few other settings will be based on the type of camera you shot your footage with. Choose File -->New-->Sequence to open the New Sequence screen.
Settings for P2 cameras If you re using one of Medill s Panasonic HVX200 cameras, you will make your selection based on whether or not you are shooting in SD or HD. Classes that are shooting in SD will choose the DV - NTSC Widescreen 48kHz preset. Settings for itouch devices If you re using an itouch device, you will simply import your footage into the Project panel and then drag one of the videos onto the New Item button next to the trash can. This will create a new seuquence based on the source material. Then just delete the footage from the timeline sequence and begin editing as usual. Classes shooting HD will choose the DVCPROHD i - DVCPROHD 1080i60 preset. Settings for Slideshows You will use the DV-NTSC Standard 48kHz preset. Click on Edit (or Adobe Premiere Pro on Mac)--> Preferences --> General. Fill in the checkbox next to Default scale to frame size so your pictures are automatically sized properly for export. Under Still Image Duration, set the desired default duration for your images (in frames). 30 frames of video equals 1 second.
Media Cache Settings for External Hard Drive Editing If you re editing with an external hard drive, create a folder on that hard drive labeled Media Cache Database. In Premiere Pro, go to Edit (or Adobe Premiere Pro on Mac)--> Preferences -->Media and check and set the Media Cache Files AND Media Cache Database so each of these items point to your external hard drive folder Media Cache Database. IMPORTANT!!! FAILURE TO DO THIS WILL RESULT IN THE PROJECT NEEDING TO CONFORM ALL FILES EVERY TIME YOU OPEN THE PROJECT. FOR PROJECTS WITH A LOT OF MEDIA, SUCH AS PROJECTS FOR DOCUMENTARY CLASSES, THIS COULD RESULT IN PREMIERE TAKING 30 MINUTES OR MORE TO RE- CONFORM THE FILES. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU FOLLOW THIS WORKFLOW.

Exporting Your Project In This Section 1. Exporting a Splash Image for the Medill CMS 2. Downloading the Custom Medill Export Presets Exporting a Splash Image for the Medill CMS Place your playhead in the timeline at the frame of video you want to use for your splash image. Press the Export Frame icon in the tool palette at the bottom of the Program Window. When the Export Frame window appears, give your splash image a name, choose JPEG from the drop-down list next to Format, click the Browse button to choose where you would like to export your frame to, and press the OK button. 3. Exporting for the Medill CMS, Ledger or to give to an instructor 4. Exporting for Vimeo and YouTube 5. Exporting for the Broadcast Autocue Server 6. Batch Export Once you ve exported your splash image, open it in Photoshop and make sure it is sized correctly for use as a splash image in the CMS. It should be 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high (see Photoshop CC Workflow).
Once you finish editing your video or slideshow, you must export it as a video file from Adobe Premiere Pro. This video file is what you will give to your instructors for grading or upload to the Autocue playback server or the Medill Content Management System for playback. Downloading the Custom Medill Export Presets Medill has developed a set of custom export presets you should use for exporting your material from Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Media Encoder for Medill-hosted destinations. These presets have the exact settings you need for your video to look good and function well on the CMS and the Autocue playback server. If you are working on your own computer, you can download a ZIP file with the Medill presets from the Medill Web site. You can find a link to the ZIP file in the Useful Links section of your class page on the CMS Info Section. You can also find a link on the IT section of the Medill Web site, on the same pages that have the Medill Multimedia Workflow documentation. Once the presets are present on your computer, you are ready to use them during the export process, which is described below. Exporting Your Project Before exporting your file, make sure you do not have any stray video or audio clips further down the timeline then your last clip. There may be extra, unused video clips or other material you did not delete during the editing process that will cause the export of the sequence to be longer than it really is. Double check this and then choose File --> Save to save your project. Make sure you have your Timeline or Program window selected. Choose File-->Export-->Media. When the Export Settings window appears, double check the yellow timeline at the bottom of the pane. Make sure the grey triangles below the yellow timeline are pulled all the way to the ends of the yellow bar; otherwise your project will only export that area and not the entire sequence. Save the ZIP file to a safe location on you computer, such as My Documents, then extract (unzip) it. The files that you extract from the ZIP file should stay on your computer for the duration of your time at Medill.
Exporting For the Medill CMS, Ledger or to Give to an Instructor In the right hand pane of the Export Settings, under Format choose H.264. If you have previously used a Medill preset on this computer under your login credentials, it should be in the Preset drop-down list. Find it in the list (should be at the top) and select it. The two Presets you will be using most are CMS Video and CMS Slideshow. Click on the yellow text next to Output Name. In the Save As window that appears, navigate to where you want to save your video and name your videousing the naming convention SLUG_VIDEO or SLUG_SLIDESHOW. Click OK. Make sure the boxes next to Export Video and Export Audio are checked. Click the Export button. After a few minutes, your video will be exported to the desired location on your computer or external hard drive. Exporting for Vimeo and YouTube Presets are built into Premiere Pro. Ask your instructor which one to use. If you have not used the required Medill preset before, press the Import Preset icon to the right of the Preset drop-down list. In the window that opens, navigate to the location where the Medill presets are saved on your computer and select the one you wish to use. When the Choose Settings dialog box appears, click OK.
Exporting For the Broadcast Autocue Playback Servers Before exporting your file, make sure you do not have any stray video or audio clips further down the timeline then your last clip. Click on the yellow type next to Output Name. This is where you decide where to save the file and what to name it. For Medill broadcast, it is important to properly name the file so the playback operator can easily find your clip. Name it with the date, slug for your story, and whether it is a PKG, VO, or SOT. An example would be MONEY - PKG. Notice there is a space before and after the dash/hyphen. Click Export to encode your file. If you want to set up a batch export in Adobe Media Encoder, click Queue. On the right side near the top, under Format select H.264 from the drop-down. Below that, under Preset select HD 1080i from the drop-down.
Batch Export If you have to export multiple versions of your file (one for CMS and one for the Autocue server, for example), you can perform a process known as a Batch Export. Instead of pressing the Export button, press the Queue button. This will open Adobe Media Encoder and add your file to the queue for processing. In Media Encoder, press the duplicate button to add copies of your timeline. Once your re finished adding versions of the export, press the Start button to begin the export process.
Photoshop CC Workflow Resizing Images for the Medill CMS Cropping an Image to a Particular Shape If you need your image to be a particular shape or pixel dimensions (for example, you need to crop a widescreen image down to a ratio of 4 units wide to 3 units high for the Medill CMS [4:3]), you can click on the crop tool and type in the exact values in the top toolbar. Type in the width and height ratio and then drag a box over the image. In This Section 1. Cropping an Image to a Particular Shape 2. Standalone Images in the CMS 3. Splash Images in the CMS The crop box will maintain the ratio you wish to keep. You can also use this to set the crop tool to crop your image to the correct pixel dimensions for splash images (width=640 px height = 480 px).
Standalone Images in the CMS Choose Image-->Image Size to open the Image Size window. Under Pixel Dimensions, set the width to 524 pixels and click OK. The height will automatically change as well because the width and the height are contrained proportianately, or linked together, within the software. Click OK. Choose File-->Save As and choose JPEG as the type. Spash Images in the CMS Choose Image-->Image Size to open the Image Size window. Under Pixel Dimensions, set the width to 640 pixels and click OK. The height should automatically change to approximately 480 pixels, give or take a few pixels for the exactness of your video camera and cropping abilities. If the height isn t close to 480 pixels, click Cancel, re-crop the image (see Cropping Images to a Particular Shape) and return to this step. If you crop it precisely to width 640 px and height 480 px, the Image Size should be this and already set. Click OK once the pixel dimensions are correct. Choose File-->Save As and choose JPEG as the type.
Audition CC Workflow Exporting Your Project Exporting Your Finished Project When you re finished with editing your audio multitrack session, you need to export it, which is different than saving it. To export, make sure the multitrack file is selected in the Files tab, and choose File-->Export--Multitrack Mixdown-->Entire session. In This Section 1. Exporting your finished project Click on Browse to change the place you want to save it to as well as what you want to name it. Depending on what your instructor or class requires, you may have to change the file type to MP3. You may also have to change the Format Settings to lower the bit rate if uploading to WordPress. To make the export mono, select Change in the Mixdown Options.
Under Master, uncheck Stereo and check Mono. Click OK. Additional Resources Premiere Pro Photoshop Audition Click OK again in the Export Multitrack Mixdown to export the file.
