6 Russia and Ukraine Market The region s economy is currently not in its best shape but both countries still have significant resources and represent an interesting market for the educational industry High demand for education (people with at least one degree: Russia 39%, Ukraine 40%) Local higher education institutions in certain regions don t have enough capacities to place all potential students and/or deliver the education in the quality that doesn t meet students expectations Education abroad programs with governmental support (for instance Global Education in Russia) Established agents and subagents network with its recognized and popular services among the students Trends in study abroad destinations (changing from UK as study abroad destination #1 in the direction of Canada and the US, especially for Ukraine)

8 FACTS ABOUT RUSSIA The largest country on the planet, spanning nine time zones Population million (2015), the world s ninth largest population (4.7% y.o.; 15% y.o.) Russia has the second largest number of US dollar billionaires in the world. At the same time, the income gap in Russia is substantial Education in Russia 99 per cent of primary, lower-secondary and upper secondary education is funded by the government (public) At tertiary level, 4.5 percent of undergraduates and 16.9 percent of postgraduates attend private institutions. Only bachelor s programmes are state-funded The country with the top indicator of the people with higher education (but lack of connection to employment perspectives). High scores in literacy and mathematics, but low scores in adaptability of knowledge in unknown situations)

9 STUDENT MOBILITY IN RUSSIA Tertiary education: of Russian students headed overseas to study (1,5% of the total international students worldwide, but 68% increase between 2002 and 2012) (UNESCO, 2014) Study destinations for tertiary education: Germany (over 9480), the USA (about 4688), France (3646) the UK (3604), Czech Republic (3455). Study destinations for short-term language programs and other levels of education: the UK, Switzerland, France, Germany, the USA, Malta, Ireland Structure of foreign education market: Over 350 agencies in Russia (agency-dependant market) Visa is required to the most of the countries It is difficult to have the same marketing strategy for different regions of a huge country

10 CURRENT SITUATION & TRENDS Education spending per student on average: US$ 5,345 primary and secondary education; US$ 8,363 tertiary level According to recent OECD report about Russia (2014), 60% of small and medium businesses have a lack of qualified personnel Share of adults who continue their education about 15% (40% for Canada; almost 50% for the USA) Projected growth rate of economy 1.7% Decline in numbers of Russians traveling abroad 15% in 2014 in comparison with 2013.

12 WHAT HAS CHANGED FOR PROVIDERS IN RECENT TWO YEARS Discounted programs for per cent strategy works! Explain how the clients and agents are protected (in case of bankruptcy of the provider, for example) Should marketing activity in Russia be reduced? (issues of reliability, it s time to build up a great agencies database) Testimonials from current students whether they experience any change in the relation towards them because of the political pressure
