The rising trend was already apparent in the previous years, with the industry registering increases since (2004: 0.1 per cent; 2005: 0.9 per cent; 2006: 1.1 per cent). Publishing companies have been able to increase their sales by 2.6 per cent thanks above all to a plus of 3.9 per cent in advertising business, as well as increases in the core business with books which continue to be the central product for publishing companies, showing a plus of 2.5 per cent. GESCHÄFTSFÜHRER: Juergen Boos REGISTER: AG Ffm HRB 6882 Ust-Id-Nr. DE /5

2 Losses were noted for magazine proceeds (minus 1.4 per cent) and for business in subsidiary rights (minus 2.0 per cent). Online services achieved the biggest jump with a plus of 24.3 per cent, but still play a subordinate role in terms of overall sales turnover. The retail book trade also showed a further increase in 2007 with sales of 5.1 billion euros (plus 2.1 per cent). Although Christmas business was not as good as in the previous year, good business in the preceding months compensated for the seasonal 3.5 per cent decline. Online booksales are showing steady growth. Estimated internet sales were at approx. 850 billion euros in 2007, representing an 8.9 per cent share of book market sales and a 21 per cent increase. (Source: Buch und Buchhandel in Zahlen 2008) Title production / New publications per annum The number of new publications rose by 1.9 per cent in 2007, with 96,500 new releases coming onto the market (2004: 86,543; 2005: 89,869; 2006: 94,716). 86,000 titles were first editions, six per cent more than the year before. For the big commercial publishing companies, new titles now account for 54 per cent of their sales, the average rate is 45 per cent. Total title production was increased in 2007 by 1.4 per cent to 984 million books and print products, with a total value of almost 4.5 billion euros (2004: 963 m, 2005: 981 m; 2006: 971 m). 3 Copyright laws Berne Convention (since 1886) Universal Copyright Convention (since 1952) Publishing company law (since 1901) Copyright law (since1965) (Source: Legal Department of the Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels) Rights and licence statistics Rights and licence buying: 6,160 rights and licences were acquired in 2007, an increase of 6.7 per cent over the previous year (2003: 7,574; 2004: 5,406; 2005: 6,132; 2006: 5,773). The proportion of rights/licences from the Anglo-American language world is the unchallenged leader here, with a share of 67 per cent in Alongside English, French also permanently ranks ahead among the most important languages of translation, followed by Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish and Russian in varying order. Two other Scandinavian languages were among the 10 most important in 2007: Norwegian (ranking 8th) and Danish (10th). Rights and licence sales: in 2007, rights and licences were sold abroad for 9,225 titles, representing a 4.5 per cent increase over the previous year (2006: 8,828). Growth is being generated primarily through trade with the Eastern European markets. If Russian and smaller languages such as Romanian and Lithuanian are added, 37 per cent of all rights and licences were actually sold to Eastern Europe in Business with Poland has moved into first place: Poland 767 rights/licences (2006: 676 rights/licences), followed by the Czech Republic with 728 rights/licence deals (2006: 693). Rights and licence trade with Asia has collapsed, with the volume of rights and licence agreements dropping from 1,755 to 870. These declines are most noticeable for Taiwan, Thailand and China: Taiwan 60 licences (2006: 200 licences), Thailand 25 licences (2006: 41 licences), China 479 licences (2006: 501 licences). Exports/Imports Since 2003, the foreign trade statistics published by the Statistisches Bundesamt and available through to 2006, have shown a significant increase in export levels for books, newspapers, magazines, sheet music and cartographical products from billion euros to billion euros. With a share of billion euros, books are by far the most important export product among the above items, and exports have increased still further here. There were also increases for newspapers, picture books and cartographical products, whilst magazines and periodicals showed a minus. The most important market for the sale of German products, first and foremost books, continues to be Europe at 2.18 billion euros. Exports to America rose from 107 million euros to 113 million in Exports to Asia, Africa and Europe showed a slight decline. An upward trend is again apparent in the import of book trade products. After the figure had dropped below the billion mark in 2005 at 969 million euros, a total of billion euros was reached in The book is also the most important product in the case of imports, followed by magazines, whilst sheet music, newspapers and cartographical products play a smaller role than for exports. 4 The UK continues to top the list of countries of origin for book imports, followed by the USA, China, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Poland and the Czech Republic. Number of publishing companies/book shops Nationally, there are more than 22,241 businesses which can be counted as part of the production or distribution book trade in the widest sense, 15,853 of which are publishing companies. As of 1 May 2008, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers & Booksellers Association) counted 5,986 members, among them 1,804 publishing companies. But the lion's share is accounted for by the bookselling trade, with 4,066 businesses. There are other book trade professional associations representing the interests of special groups such as antiquarian dealers, school textbook and music publishers. Most members of these associations are also members of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. Apart from the membership figures from the Börsenverein, the sales tax statistics from the official national statistics office, the Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis), also serve as a source in calculating the number of book trade business operations (figures are only available through to 2006). They include all bookshops and book publishing companies with an annual sales turnover of 17,500 euros and above, and in using different criteria for their definitions, arrive at a different result. According to the sales tax definitions, there were precisely 2,843 publishing companies in 2006 (2003: 2,710; 2004: 2,771; 2005: 2,812). Whilst there is a rising trend in the case of publishing companies, there is more of a decline in figures for the distribution book trade: 5,049 businesses were recorded in 2006 (2003: 5.127; 2004: 5.121; 2005: 5.123). Sales/Sales outlets With a share of 53.6 per cent of total book sales turnover, the retail bookselling trade is still by far the most important sales outlet for books, although the share taken by the traditional specialist retail trade shows long-term decline. In 1997, retail booksellers accounted for 59.3 per cent, with a high in 1985 of 64 per cent. The retail book trade has lost its percentage points primarily to the mail order trade which takes a 12.6 per cent share of total sales (2007: 11.6 per cent). But this growth is more strongly attributable to online business than to the traditional mail order book business. Book fair As the international publishing industry's biggest and most important event, the Frankfurt Book Fair is held every year in October. In 2008, 7,373 publishing companies from 100 countries exhibited 402,284 products, including 123,496 new releases. The fair is both a trade show and an event for the general public. GESCHÄFTSFÜHRER: Juergen Boos REGISTER: AG Ffm HRB 6882 Ust-Id-Nr. DE /5

5 The number of visitors totalled 299,112 in 2008 (5.6 per cent more than the previous year), among them 186,240 trade visitors. The next Frankfurt Book Fair is scheduled for 14 to 18 October China will introduce itself as the Guest of Honour. The more nationally focused Leipzig Book Fair is held every year in spring. In 2009, 147,000 visitors attended the four-day literary festival (2008: 129,000), a plus of 14 per cent over the year before. 2,135 exhibitors from 38 countries showed their new titles on an area of 65,000 square metres. (2007: 2,348 exhibitors from 36 countries; 2008: 2,700 exhibitors from 21 countries). In 2010, the Leipzig Book Fair will be held from 18 to 21 March.
