1 DAVID TAYLOR Beauty needs corruption. Silversmith and designer David Taylor allows his work to be defiled by surprising and unholy fancy. In a world obsessed with status, branding and expense, he develops his ingenious guerrilla-art between exquisite silversmithing, junk aesthetics and elegance. To work in silver is to choose a proud tradition but with that follows conservative expectations. Taylor challenges these expectations; what does exclusive look like, what it can portray? His silver is both serious and amusing, grafted with the souvenirs sentimentality, with pop cultures worthless debris and it disseminates what is important today: reflection, humour and need for something different. Taylor works quickly and intuitively, the desire for movement is strong. "My thoughts always seem to lie a step ahead what I am trying to do." His industrial design is strikingly concrete. Ideas are drawn to their focal point where expression and function reach a toy-like clarity. While David Taylor's journey of discovery goes on his work continues to tell us about ourselves, about our weaknesses and about our dreams in these days of mass-consumption. /Petter Eklund

2 I was trained as a silversmith and my work can be seen as the continuation of a tradition. From a historical perspective the work of the silversmith has focused more on effect than function, where the visual impact created by a piece is far more important than what it s actually used for. Silverware spends a lot more time on display looking good than in action. I use this approach when making my work, where although function is important it is not always at the top of my agenda. Since graduating from Konstfack in 1999 I have worked on numerous projects ranging from the purely artistic to community aid in developing counties. My product design has been applauded insweden and the rest of Europe receiving several prestigious awards including two RED DOTS and an Elle Interior Design Prize. In recent years I have produced a numbers of public art installations where I combine craft sensibilities with design practicalities the most prominent of which can be seen in central Stockholm s Östermalmstorg Tube Station and Sweden s Permanent Mission to the EU entrance hall in Brussels.
