2 The Nordic Centre in Fudan University is a collaboration between our 26 Nordic member universities, the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS), and Fudan University. The Centre was established in 1995 and has since the beginning worked to strengthen the ties between the Nordic countries and China within the fields of education, research, and culture. 1

3 One of the ways we do this, is to offer office space for scholars (Ph.D s, Post Docs, etc.) at our offices in Shanghai. We are located inside of Fudan University on the beautiful Handan Campus in buzzing Shanghai. We welcome scholars from all disciplines as long as they are affiliated with one of our member institutions. 2

4 We offer: A desk in a shared office, computer with internet access, and printing facilities The centre's help in establishing contact with Fudan researchers within your field Access to the Nordic Centre library (see the next page) and Fudan's online database Quiet surroundings where you can focus on your work The possibility of participating in the Nordic Centre s ongoing activities Advice on settling down in Shanghai (short-term or long-term) A warm and friendly atmosphere 3

5 The Nordic Centre Library The Nordic Centre has a small reference library located in the same building as our offices. The library is equipped with reading spaces, computers and a copy machine. The book catalog is based partly on donations and partly on what we purchase for educational activities. We encourage all reasearchers coming to the NC to check with us beforehand if we have the materials you need or to make sure to bring the materials to Shanghai. In addition to the books, the library also offers daily newspapers and the following journals in print: Asian Survey China Perspectives China Quarterly Economist: Europe Edition Journal of Contemporary China Copenhagen Journal of Asian Studies China Journal 4

6 Finances The cost of having an office space at the Nordic Centre is EUR 100 per month. The cost can either be invoiced directly to you or to your home institution. It is the reseacher's responsibility to ensure that she/he is covered by the home institution's insurance or to take out an individual insurance before coming to China. Costs for accommodation in Shanghai vary a great deal, depending on your requirements. If you want to rent a room in a shared apartment, you may be lucky and find something as cheap as RMB 2,500 per month. If you want to rent an apartment, the price will depend on size, location, and condition. You can rent a 100-square meter apartment in the centre of Shanghai for RMB 10,000 per month.
