4 Green-IT improvement options Optimizing power consumption in telecommunication networks through: Load adaptive power management of network elements (e.g. utilization of macro cells in combination with small cells in radio access networks) Power down of IT resources during night hours (e.g. power down of network elements such as routers in transport networks) Utilization of existing energy storage capacity during peak hours (e.g. back-up batteries in larger telecommunication sites) Optimizing power consumption in data centers & cloud applications: Improved IT resource utilization based on condition monitoring and load prognosis (e.g. load shifting and tasks scheduling in data centers) Holistic control of data center infrastructure and IT resources (e.g. improvement of thermal management) Utilization of renewable energy sources and live migration of IT services between different data centers 4

8 Live migration of services between data centers Objective: Utilizing locally available renewable energy resources or free IT resources Migration of services based on weather and load prognosis as well as an automated local condition analysis Picture source: Rittal 8

9 Results and improvement potential Load and power management based on condition monitoring and load prognostic reduces the resulting power consumption of servers up to 25% Small Data Center (~150 server units): 150 MWh/a ( /year) Large Data Center (~7.000 server units): 1 GWh/a (1 Mio /year) In comparison: With an average virtualization rate an energy saving of only about 6% to 11% is realistic. In addition to energy savings, load adaptive IT utilization will significantly decrease hardware and help consolidation Novel cooling concept (block heat and power plant) as well as the all subsections addressing climate control created an energy saving of 17% The reduction in cooling overhead improved the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to an excellent Factor 1,1. Live migration between data centers has the potential of increased resource utilization. A reduction in power consumption of up to 20% has been calculated.
