TIPS&TECHNIQUES 13 Michael Schwalm, dbi Services Oracle Enterprise Manager : Consolidation Planner Introduced in Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, the consolidation planner allows to access server workloads in order to simulate the benefits or limitations of a consolidation strategy within a specified physical or virtual target environment. It must not be confused with the capacity planner, introduced earlier, which helps database administrators plan future capacity requirements of existing environments. The aim of consolidation is to identify underused servers in order to share resources between the maximum of services (such as databases). In some cases, consolidation can avoid: The waste of resources: it is more efficient to run many databases on one well sized server instead of using many oversized servers. Important costs: the operating, maintenance and administration costs may increase when adding servers as well as the power consumption, the rack space and the cooling requirements. Environmental heterogeneity: Consolidation allows standardizing the environment at the operating system and hardware level, involving cost reduction by simplifying administration. Context To illustrate how the consolidation planner works, I used Enterprise Manager 12c Release 3 ( ). I considered the following scenario: The consolidation project concerns four physical Linux servers. Two of them are member of an extended cluster VMTESTRAC12. The cluster has one node located in DATACENTER1 and another node in DATACENTER2, which is the secondary site. The business is divided into two services: SALES and HUMAN RESOURCES (HR). New servers will be purchased, but the business wants to limit the number of servers in order to reduce maintenance costs. The geographic location is an important constraint, because of the existence of the secondary site. The servers are listed below: Server Name Location Department Business Cluster vmtestfusion01 Datacenter 1 Sales Development N vmtestora12c1 Datacenter 1 HR Production N vmtestrac12c1 Datacenter 1 Sales Production Y vmtestrac12c2 Datacenter 2 Sales Production Y Note that in this example, virtual machines were used as source servers for destination. However, the project will be considered as Physical to Physical. Consolidation Planner basics Enterprise Manager Consolidation Planner can consider different type of targets for the consolidation of the servers currently managed: Standard physical target machine Oracle Virtual Machine target Oracle Exadata machine For both Physical and Virtual targets, the user can define customized resource capacities of the consolidated physical servers (Memory, Storage, CPU etc.). The consolidation planner does not seem to make a difference when selecting Physical or Virtual targets. For Oracle Exadata, resource capacities are automatically based on the selected Oracle Exadata technology. The CPU power of each server is calculated according to the SPECint _rate_base2006 benchmark, published by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC). Each type of CPU has been tested by the SPEC and a corresponding benchmark has been calculated. When using the consolidation planner, you have to understand four main concepts. The source server(s) represent(s) one or more exiting servers, managed by the Enterprise Manager. The destination server(s) represent(s) one or more servers on which we would like to consolidate. The destination server can be an existing one, already managed by the Enterprise Manager, or it can be a new configuration based on customized resource. The resources are specified by the user in the scenario.

14 TIPS&TECHNIQUES The consolidation project: Here, we define the type of consolidation (P2V: physical to virtual or P2P: physical to physical ), and the source server(s) involved in the consolidation project. Servers involved in the consolidation You can add new servers by clicking on Add Servers. I selected the source servers from the list: The consolidation scenario: It is attached to a project and defines the resources of the destination server (if required) or the type of destination server (Exadata, Oracle VM, customized configuration). We can also consider some constraints such as the geographical location, business lifecycle (production, development etc.) or his affiliation with an Oracle cluster. About the installation The consolidation planner is part of the Oracle Chargeback and Capacity Planning plugin. This plugin must be installed on the Management Server in order to be able to use the consolidation planner. Before deploying the plugin, Oracle advises to backup the Oracle Management Server configuration. Also note that in order to install the plugin, a downtime will be required. Enterprise Manager will restart and will not be available during the install process! To see the install status, use the following command: The selected servers and their current performances are listed at the bottom of the project window following next. $ emctl status oms details Creating a project To create a new project, you need to access the Consolidation Planner from the Enterprise menu. You can create a new project from the main screen of the consolidation planner by clicking on Create Project. Here is the project I created. Name and description I provided a name and a description for the project: Period for data collection We must scroll down to access this part of the window. It allows specifying the number of days during which we will collect data. By entering a null value for minimum days, the consolidation planner will use existing historical data, which will allow to run the scenarios immediately. In the other case, the consolidation planner will wait until enough days of metrics have been collected. In this example, one week of historical data has been selected by entering respectively 0 and 7 for minimum days and maximum days fields. Type of consolidation I selected a P2P consolidation type:

TIPS&TECHNIQUES 15 Project overview When the data collection for the project is over, the project can be exploited and three tabs are available. General tab This tab provides a summary of the project definition: name, number of sources, status etc. It shows that the CPU consumption has reached 61% to 80% at about 02:00 PM on 18 July Create a scenario You can create a scenario by clicking on Create Scenario. The scenario will be based on the given project, using the source servers provided in the project. This is the scenario I have created. The first step consists in providing the resources to be considered for the consolidation. Source Servers tab This tab provides all measured information about the performances of each source server concerned by the consolidation project. Name and description I provided a name and a description for the scenario: Here, we are only interested by CPU, Memory and Storage utilization. Source workload tab This tab shows the workload in percent for each server and for several resource types. We have to select the server name, the type of resource and the monthly period. One column corresponds to one day, one line corresponds to one hour, and the color of the cells is explained in the legend. Resource requirements The resource requirements part allows specifying all information concerning resources to be considered in the scenario. I only selected CPU, Memory and Disk: Thus, on the following picture, you can see the CPU consumption of vmtestrac12c2 for the July month. Scale factor The scale factor is a coefficient applied to the estimated resource requirement. The value 1 (default) corresponds to the initial requirement. Using a factor greater than 1 will make the resource requirement grow. In this example, I kept the default values.

16 TIPS&TECHNIQUES Resource allocation The Resource Allocation list offers three options: The scenario is based on two constraints, as mentioned in the Context section (see below): Conservative With this option, the consolidation planner will take peaks into account for the calculation of the required resources. If, for example, a job is consuming 80% of CPU each night for one hour, the consolidation planner will act on the assumption of a high CPU requirement. Aggressive With this option, the consolidation planner will calculate your average resource consumption without considering peaks, allowing more source servers to fit into one destination server. Medium This option is in between the conservative and aggressive options. Servers of two different datacenters should not be consolidated together. Nodes of a cluster should not be consolidated together. These two constraints involve selecting the two options Location and Nodes of an Oracle cluster. In this example, I have run a high CPU workload on node vmtestrac12c2 during 7 consecutive days to demonstrate the impact of the Resource Allocation option this option (see later). Then, I selected the Conservative option. Resource requirements previsualisation There are estimated values for the selected options, according to the resource previsualisation. We can get a direct preview of the consequences of the selected constraints by clicking on Preview Effects on Constraints in the Constraints tab. The following picture shows the preview of the incompatibilities for the server vmtestrac12c2. This server is located at Datacenter 2 and belongs to a cluster. We can already see that vmtestrac12c2 will require an important CPU power, since a high CPU workload occurred during the week. Scenario constraints We can provide some constraints to be considered in the consolidation. The constraints are divided into two sub groups. Compatible servers: based on logical or hardware properties (location, hardware and OS vendor etc.). Mutually exclusive servers: based on the affiliation with an Oracle cluster (CRS or RAC). As we can see, the consolidation planner estimates that the server vmtestrac12c2 is not compatible with all three other servers. It represents a total of four incompatibilities, because:

TIPS&TECHNIQUES 17 vmtestfusion01, vmtestora12c1 and vmtestrac12c1 are located on a different datacenter than vmtetrac12c2: Therefore they cannot be consolidated with vmtestrac12c2. vmtestrac12c1 belongs to the same cluster than vmtestrac12c2: Therefore the first cannot be consolidated with the second. We can select a model of CPU in a list by clicking on the browse button. The list contains several models of CPU and their performance according to the SPEC benchmark. At this time, we can already guess that the consolidation planner will try to consolidate vmtestfusion01, vmtestora12c1 and vmtestrac12c1 on one server and vmtestrac12c2 on another one, if the target servers have enough resources. Destination candidates Information about destination servers must be provided. The consolidation planner gives a recommendation on the minimum resource requirement, which is displayed at the top of the targets planning page: Oracle allows using three types of targets: Oracle Exadata servers User-specified servers Existing servers Oracle Exadata is the default choice. But, for this scenario, a user-specified server has been selected. The consolidation planner will then distribute source servers across one or more target servers, according to the source requirements and the target availabilities. I provided a CPU with a benchmark of 20, 15 GB for the memory and 80 GB for the disk. I have selected an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 to get a benchmark of 20 and to respect the minimum requirements displayed by the consolidation planner. Maximum allowed resource utilization The Maximum Allowed Resource Utilization on the Destination Servers field allows defining a safety margin for the resources on the destination servers. Depending on the margin, less available resources will be considered on the destination servers. I kept the default values: On the validation time setting of the Targets Planning page, a warning may be displayed if the destination server has not enough available resources to satisfy the minimum requirements. We can ignore this warning by clicking OK. If the new server has not enough resources to fit all source servers, the consolidation planner will try to add more destination servers and distribute the source servers resources among them.

18 TIPS&TECHNIQUES Server mapping Before validating the scenario creation, we can manage the mapping of the source servers with the destination servers. The Ratio tab This tab shows the mapping of the source servers on the destination server(s) in a simple fashion. The server mapping can only be changed if existing servers were selected as destination servers. Here, Automatic Mapping is selected by default and cannot be altered, since I selected user-defined destination servers. On one hand, you can see that vmtestrac12c2 would be hosted on the first destination server. vmtestrac12c2 has a weekly CPU workload (as described above). This explains the high CPU utilization on the first new server observed in the Destination tab. Review The last step gives you a summary of the scenario: On the other hand, you can see that all of the three other servers would be hosted on the second new server. This explains the high memory utilization on the second new server, in the Destination tab. You can also observe that our constraints have been respected: Note that before submission, the scenario can be saved as a template. This will generate an XML file which is stored locally on the computer from which the Enterprise Manager is accessed. Scenario overview The scenario is run just after its creation and the analysis may take a while. Seven tabs are available for the scenario once the calculation is finished. vmtestrac12c2, belonging to the cluster and located at Datacenter 2, would be consolidated alone. This server has a weekly CPU workload which explains the high CPU requirement on the new server one. All other servers would be consolidated together, as I have guessed above. This explains the high memory requirement on the new server two. The Mapping tab The mapping tab displays the same information as the ratio tab, but in a more advanced fashion: You can see the mapping of the source servers on the destination server(s) as well as the resource utilization for each source and destination server. General tab This tab only shows a summary of the scenario. Destination tab This tab shows the new destination server(s) and the new resource usage. Apparently, two new servers will be required. More CPU is required on the first server, while more memory is required on the second one.

TIPS&TECHNIQUES 19 Confidence tab As for the Source Workload tab for the project, this tab shows the estimated workload for a given destination server, resource type and time period. Here, for the first new server hosting vmtestrac12c2, you can again see the CPU workload at 2:00 PM on 18 July, as observed in the project Source Workload tab. Exclusions tab This tab shows servers that were not consolidated and the reason of their exclusion. Exclusions occur when the destination server has not enough resources to fit a source server (i.e. the source server requires 16 GB of memory and the provided destination server is limited to 8 GB). In our scenario, there were no exclusions. However, the new server has twice more CPU power, so the workload now represents 21% to 40% instead of 62% to 80%. Violations tab This tab shows the violations of the constraints provided during the scenario creation. Typically, violations appear when a manual mapping is performed while creating the scenario. An example would be the manual consolidation of two members of one cluster on the same node while the cluster constraint option is being checked. In our scenario, there were no violations because the automatic mapping has been performed. Conclusion A consolidation project can be performed manually, but it is not always easy to get and compile real statistics about existing environments. The big advantage is that the consolidation planner acquires values automatically and directly from the Enterprise Manager repository, in a selected time period and for each managed host. The input values represent the real usage of the resources on this time interval. As you can see, the consolidation planner tries to consolidate the source servers on a minimum number of destination servers, and you cannot control the number of servers in the new consolidated environments, until you have selected the existing hosts as destination servers. The consolidation planner is a tool provided by Oracle to validate the construction of large-scale Oracle environments or to define the requirements of a private Oracle cloud.
