1 JR 204 Introduction to Web Design Prerequisite: none Course Syllabus Semester 1/2008 (June to October) Lecturer: Phone Number: E mail: Ulrich.werner@iis.ru.ac.th Course Schedule: June 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 2008 Room: IIS RU building, 8 th floor, room 5 and computer room Office Hours: All course days and by appointment Course Description: 3 Credits Course Overview This course introduces to all aspects of contemporary Web design, in particular to standards, as a successful tool in communication. Students gain hand on experience in several tools both locally and from application service providers. Students will apply the understanding gained in this course in a comprehensive project. Course Structure Day 1 Introduction to the course and course syllabus, analysis of students interests and experience, discussion of the course goals and the expected outcome, discussion of the differences between Web Design and Web Programming. 2 Day 2 and 3 Introduction to Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, self learning phases with textbook exercises and the multimedia material submitted by the textbook CD, to gain handon knowledge is using Dreamweaver as a tool in the following project. Day 4 to 7 Development of Web sites that promote studying international programs at Thai universities to (a) Chinese and (b) Thai students. Project teams develop a clear and concise description of their target groups, prioritize them, and develop approaches to address their specific information needs. After fixing the content, the project teams use Dreamweaver as a tool for screen design. Day 8 Presentation of the project outcomes, submission of project reports and according files, such as html files, image files, text, sound and animation files (both raw and finished). Software The following applications will be used in the lectures: Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Google Labs: Page Creator Google Labs: Sites Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox

3 Class Attendance In this course, there are no points to gain for class attendance. Students are expected to attend classes full time. The course design allows those students who miss a single topic or even a whole day to catch up individually. Any book based learning, however, requires a lot more of self discipline and individual research to catch up to the same level that those students have who regularly attend classes. Be aware that those students who prefer not to attend classes full time will have a hard job to do in order to prepare for the final examination successfully. Class Hours Classes begin at 9 a.m. (not at 9.30 a.m.) and end at 4 p.m. Classes may end earlier in order to give students time to do their assignments. In order not to distract and disturb those students who come in time, late comers are asked to wait for the next brake before joining the class. Plagiarism The policies of Ramkhamhaeng University and the Institute of International Studies do not accept any plagiarism or copyright violation. Please be aware of the plagiarism policy in the IIS RU Student Handbook, which is available for download on the IIS RU Web site ( Final Examination The final examination is in form of project report and presentation of the comprehensive project. The project report is to be submitted in a professional print version. All materials used are to submit on a CD or DVD in digital form in a resolution as high as possible. The presentation will be not less than 30 minutes and should meet business presentation standards. Grading and Evaluation Criteria The maximum number of points available in this course is 100 points: 20% (20 grade points) from the warm up project 20% (20 grade points) from active participation 30% (30 grade points) from the comprehensive project report 30% (30 grade points) from the final project presentation

Students, especially the absent ones, are responsible for receiving all announcements and changes made in class. Mobile Phones Mobile phones must be switched off before entering the classroom at and all times during lectures and lab sessions. The students are not to use mobile phones during lectures. In case of not maintaining this rule or if your phone emits any sound during class session, you will be invited to leave the classroom and not return; you will be considered as absent for the day. Food It is clear that the students should come to class after they have had enough food. You are kindly requested to refrain from bringing your food and drinks to the classroom, except there is a medical reason for it for which you certainly can offer a proof. Leaving the Classroom If you wish to leave the classroom, please wait until the break, except there is a medical reason for it.
