1 (CSIS 2500 All Section ) Management Information Systems (3.0 Credits) INSTRUCTOR NAME: Fred Parvaz Via Blackboard COURSE DESCRIPTION: Outline for Spring 2011 This course describes the integration of basic systems theory with the design, implementation, and application of Management Information Systems (MIS). This will facilitate the understanding of MIS goals and the effect of MIS on organisations and the corporate management. 2 COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objective of this course is to explore the many ways in which technology assists organisations to function and to understand the effects of information systems on organisation structure, management, and employees. Emphasis will be placed on the use of the Internet in a Networked Enterprise. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Information is a resource. It costs money to create, process and to store. Students will come to an understanding of the value of information in an organisation for the contemporary approaches to management decision making. The student will also understand the meaning of a networked Enterprise, with the associate complexities of its Management Information Systems. ASSIGNMENTS/QUIZZES/TESTS: Important Notes: Case Study Assignments 15% Term Project 15% Midterm #1 15% Midterm #2 15% Participation / Discussions 10% Final Exam 30% Assignments are based on the textbook. You should read the case studies and respond to some analytical questions. Submission date and time are firm. Please click on the assignments icon. Participation mark is given to students who regularly participate in the discussions of the issues with other students through Blackboard discussion forum. Participation mark is based on the value, frequency and quality of the contribution. Topics of the discussion are posted. To participate in the discussions, you should click on the topic and provide your views. The participation forum will be locked a week prior to the end of the classes. Please see the calendar. It is important that you contribute and debate the issues from the start and continue throughout the term. All regularly scheduled exams are online. Each exam is made of randomly selected questions from the text book. Students will have a limited time to login and answer the questions. Please click on the exams icon. Practice test is not marked and is for your practice only. It is the responsibility of the

3 student to make sure all questions are submitted. You have half an hour of login opportunity. After you login, you can finish the test in allotted time (usually 90 minutes). Final exam schedule will be posted by the Registrar s Office. Students must be prepared to write the final exam during the said period. It is your responsibility to refrain from making any arrangement such as travel, work, etc during the final exam period. If you miss the online exam for a legitimate reason, your make up test may have a different format and may require your physical presence. I will only communicate with you through the Blackboard system. I will not participate in your discussions and debates. This is a self directed course, it is NOT a self paced course. You have deadlines to meet. I will not be able to accept any submissions after the deadline. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have access to a reliable and connected computer and allow yourself ample time to submit your project or assignment. Blackboard is the official website of the course. If you wish to communicate with each other in a different environment (such as MSN), I will not be able to verify and validate the content. I strongly recommend to use the Blackboard mail and discussion links to communicate with your group members. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to me. The Chat rooms are set up for your use. I do not monitor these areas and will not respond to any questions asked anywhere except by . Students are expected to login to mylangara portal daily, then link to the course. You are expected to navigate through different components. The mail link indicates if you have mail waiting for you with a flag. You are invited to attend orientation sessions scheduled for the new students. Call EdTech for further information. 2. It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of all announcements made on the site. 3. You will find all your assignments on the course site, you must submit your assignments on time. Late assignments will not be accepted. You will see all your marks as soon as your assignments or exams are marked. 4. As the course coordinator, I have posted some notes about the important topics, where you can find useful material. Click on lecture notes. During the term, I will post practice quizzes on line. You should use the practice quiz to learn how to conduct the exams and submit questions properly. I will provide regular feedback on

4 the review questions and case studies. You should not be concerned with the marks of your practice quiz, they are ignored. - All students are required to login regularly and check the calendar, , discussion boards etc, in order to pass the course. Failure to login for more than 3 consecutive days is not acceptable. Plagiarism Our policy regarding to cheating and plagiarism is zero tolerance. Using ideas from the other people or resources (including the textbook) in whole or in part must be clearly indicated and acknowledged. There will be no warning or second chance. COMPUTING SCIENCE & INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT: It is the aim of the Computing Science & Information Systems Department of Langara College to promote throughout each course the mastery of core skills such as reading and reading comprehension, writing fluency, verbal articulation, and math development. These core skills will be practised by means of student presentations and/or class participation, and will be evaluated on submitted work.
