1 APPOINTMENT OF SCHOOL STAFF INSTRUCTOR COMBINED CADET FORCE We are seeking a School Staff Instructor to support the delivery of our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programmes. The successful applicant will be well qualified with prior military experience. Ideally, the successful applicant will be from a military background and through previous experience and training will play a key role in maintaining the high standards of the Combined Cadet Force. The CCF department run many extra-curricular activities and a willingness to be involved in these is essential. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Job Title: Reports to: Direct Reports: Role Purpose: School Staff Instructor Director of Co-curricular; Officer Commanding CCF; Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator None To motivate staff and cadets in the development of their CCF and outdoor adventure training skills KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. To assist in the training of cadets and CCF staff. 2. To support the Officer Commanding in organising and participating in CCF camps and activities 3. To assist in the delivery of Duke of Edinburgh and other adventure training packages. 4. To account for and maintain all CCF stores 5. To account for, source and maintain all College adventure training equipment. 6. To prepare all risk assessments for both CCF and adventure training packages. 7. To run an out of hours club / activity, such as a. Extra CCF training for Shell and other cadets. b. Shooting Clubs (to enter school into competitions) 8. To assist in the delivery of the Prep school adventure training trips. 9. To assist with the delivery of the Forest School progamme in Prep and Pre-Prep. 10. To carry out all administration associated with the role, eg. booking training facilities, and courses for staff, dealing with Brigade HQ and completing paperwork 11. Carry out any other tasks as required by the Officer Commanding CCF and DofE Coordinator CCF TRAINING The SSI is required to train and test the cadets and staff on weapon handling. Other aspects of training include:
2 Preparation of a yearly training programme along with the Officer Commanding. The delivery of training to staff and cadets in line with current policies. Preparation, checking and signing of all risk assessments, Range Action Safety Plans (RASP) and Exercise Action Safety Plans (EASP). Amending and keeping all staff up to date on any training and policy changes. Preparation of all equipment for the training, and issue/receipt of kit to be used. Maintenance of all training equipment, weapons, uniform. Sending all relevant training information to Brigade reference all training conducted by the CCF. CCF CAMPS AND ACTIVITIES To support the CCF Office Commanding in CCF camps, including: Booking of the training area. Booking of ammunition/rations/training team/transport Carrying out recces. Advertising camp Attending camp briefings Preparing EASP/RASP for the activity. Carrying out a full risk assessment for the activity. Preparing stores for the activity. Acting as safety for the exercise. On return, collecting in all stores/ carry out a full reg numbers check/clean stores and put away. DUKE OF EDINBURGH S AWARD To assist the DofE Co-ordinator in all aspects of the DofE including: STORES Planning and conducting outward bound training Management and administration of the DofE programme Attending all mandatory training and assessment expeditions Attending any mandatory DofE staff training courses The SSI is to carry out the following in regard to all CCF stores and should be stores trained: Carrying out stock takes on all CCF equipment both military and civilian. Ordering any equipment required for various training. Checking all equipment for serviceability. Issuing uniform to staff and cadets in line with current policies. To prepare all stores for all mandatory inspections. ARMOURY Responsibilities for the armoury include: Carrying out daily security checks on armoury. Cleaning and preparing all weapons for mandatory inspections which happen twice a year. Ensuring all checks are carried out on the weapons held within the CCF armoury. Maintaining all registered numbers equipment held on account by the CCF, including all weapons and radio equipment.
3 RANGE Reporting any problems with any equipment held within the armoury and transport the weapons for repair in line with current policies. The SSI is on 24hr call for the CCF armoury and should live no further than 1 hour from the college. The SSI should be both long and short range qualified and responsible for: Planning and preparing the RASPs for all shoots within the CCF range. Ensuring all other qualified Range Conducting Officers (RCO), only carry out shoots as laid down by current policy. Carrying out a monthly inspection of the range and log all findings on the relevant paperwork. If any faults are found he/she is to contact SERFCA to repair these faults. Ensuring all policies and procedures are kept up to date and adhered to as laid down Preparing the range for its mandatory annual inspection. Carrying out any minor repairs required to keep the range in operation. Ensuring that the range is kept clean and free from any ricochet hazards. INSPECTIONS The SSI is responsible for preparing for the following inspections: Annual range inspection. Weapon inspection booking and transporting No8 rifles to Deepcut. Cadet GP rifle is inspected every year and the No8 rifle every 6 months. Equipment Care inspection annually. BGI every 2 years. Security Inspection every 5 years. Ammunition inspection every three years. PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications Highly desirable: Mountain Leader Trained Range qualified Relevant outdoor education qualifications Experience Essential: Previous military experience Desirable: The ideal candidate will be a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of Sergeant rank or above Experience of managing stores Experienced Range Conducting Officer Previous experience of running expeditions and training Prevous experience of running DofE programme
4 Skills / Qualities Strong administrative and organisation skills Ability to interact well with young people Computer literate THE SCHOOL: Ardingly is a school with a strong boarding ethos and all staff are expected to contribute to the cocurricular life and duties in this very busy school. Ardingly College is one of the four schools that comprise the Southern Division of the Woodard Corporation and as such, is a Christian school within the catholic tradition of the Church of England. Within the College there are three schools sharing the same attractive campus as follows: The Pre-Prep which is on the southern edge of the campus is a Nursery and Pre-Preparatory School catering for 110 pupils from 3 to 7 years of age. The 1.2 million pound development was completed in The Prep School which is situated in and around the north-western wing of the main school building caters for 260 girls and boys from 7 to 13 years of age. The Prep School shares some of its facilities with the Senior School, but is a separate school in its own right. The Senior School, whose Headmaster is a member of HMC, is a co-educational day and boarding school with approximately 540 pupils. 47% of the pupils are boarders, almost half of the total number are girls and there are over 220 students in the Sixth Form. The Senior School has been fully co-educational since 1982 and has excellent facilities. Over the past ten years, the school has built a new Sports Hall, a Music Recital Room, and two new boarding houses. Further exciting changes include a new Art School, improved Drama facilities, state of the art language centre and a new Library. The older block has almost been completely refurbished to provide state of the art classrooms. A new 100 ensuite-bedroom Upper Sixth boarding house opened in February While the Prep School has its own Head, the Headmaster of the Senior School is the Head of the College as a whole. Ardingly achieves high academic standards at GCSE, AS, A Level and IB. Last year had a 100% pass rate at A Level/IB, with 77% of those passes being A*-B or their IB equivalent. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, introduced in 2001, has quickly established itself as an attractive and challenging alternative to A Level studies. The average score in the last two years has been 35 points, the equivalent of 1 A* grade and 3 A grades at A Level. 50% of students in the Sixth Form study the IB. The school offers an outstanding range of extra-curricular activities and has a proud tradition of sporting achievement, especially in Football, Hockey (boys and girls regional representatives over the past four years), Shooting, Cricket and Tennis. Ardingly has a strong international perspective and approximately 20% of the students are from overseas. Over 35 nationalities are currently represented at Ardingly, with the largest contingent coming from Europe. This is seen as one of the College s greatest strengths. Ardingly is a school with a strong boarding ethos and all staff are expected to contribute to the cocurricular life and duties in this very busy school.
5 TERMS AND CONDITIONS This is a full or part time position, requiring attendance for 40 hours per week (or 20 hours per week for part time) during term-time, with an additional commitment to attend expeditions during 3 weekends per term and outside term-time for an additional 8 weeks. Salary will be determined based on prior qualifications and experience. It is expected to be circa 20,000 per annum( 10,00 pro rata). Holiday entitlement is 25 days per annum, but must be taken outside term-time and expedition dates. A remission of 33% of fees is available for the successful applicant s children when they enrol in Reception or above at Ardingly, assuming a place is available and entry requirements are met. Additional bursaries / scholarships may also be available. The post-holder will also be able to claim additional remuneration from the Ministry of Defence to a value of c 3,500 per annum. Accommodation may also be available.
