2 Read the following passage and answer the question that follows in complete sentences. Dangerous Winter Storms Blizzards are treacherous winter storms that are a mixture of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities. While heavy snowfalls and severe cold often accompany blizzards. Sometimes strong winds pick up snow that has already fallen, creating blizzard conditions on the ground. The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow, or blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours). When blizzard conditions are expected, the National Weather Service will issue a "Blizzard Warning". When these conditions are not expected to occur at the same time, but one or two of these conditions are predicted, a "Winter Storm Warning" or "Heavy Snow Warning" may be issued. Blizzard conditions often develop on the northwest side of an powerful storm system. The difference between the low pressure in the storm and the high pressure to the west of the center of circulation, creates a tight pressure gradient, or difference in pressure between two sections of the storm, which in turn results in very strong winds. These strong winds pick up snow from the ground, or blow falling snow, creating low visibilities and the possibility for significant drifting of snow. 5 Read the following article about the Arctic Fox, then answer the question on the next page. Arctic Fox The arctic fox is an extremely resilient animal that can survive freezing Arctic temperatures as low as 58 F (-50 C) in the icy open lands where it makes its home. It has furry soles, short ears, and a short muzzle, which are essential adaptations to the unfriendly climate. Arctic foxes live in burrows, yet during intense blizzards they have been known to burrow into the snow to create shelter. Arctic foxes have striking white (sometimes blue-gray) coats that act as very effective winter camouflage. The natural shades allow the animal to blend into the tundra's ever-present snow and ice. When the seasons change, the fox's coat changes as well, adopting a brown or gray appearance that offers cover among the summer tundra's rocks and plants. These colorings help foxes to successfully hunt rodents, birds, and even fish. Yet, during the harsh winter, their prey can be scarce. During these times, arctic foxes will follow the region's premier predator, a polar bear, to eat the leftover scraps from its kills. Foxes also eat vegetables when they are available. The arctic fox s thick tail aids with balance. Yet, the tail, or brush, is especially useful as warm cover in cold weather.
