2 Action 1.2. Develop knowledge on the impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity. Review the knowledge on how forest management systems/plans can maintain and enhance biological diversity while ensuring their economic viability. 1. Title of Project Inventaire regional permanent des ressources forestières. Regional forest inventory. 2. Objectives of Project Biodiversity parameters (plant diversity as the basis of biodiversity sensu lato) have been included in the regional forest inventory, on the basis of scientific contribution from the universities 3. Potential Contribution to the Implementation of the Action Impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity: As about sample plots are observed in a ten years cycle basis, many interpretation will be possible on the relationship between biodiversity and stand structure, management and other characteristics of the forests. 4. Actor(s) Division de la Nature et des Forêts (Regional forest service), Forest Resources Direction, team Regional forest inventory. 5. Methods, Time Frame and Geographical Scope Systematic and permanent grid of sample plots (1 plot per 50 ha). Each plot is visited every ten years (see page in annex). 6. Sources of Further Information A detailed publication will be available in mid 2000, giving results for the whole set of indicators, including biodiversity indicators. 1

4 Action 1.2. Develop knowledge on the impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity. Review the knowledge on how forest management systems/plans can maintain and enhance biological diversity while ensuring their economic viability. 1. Title of Project Etude des impacts de la gestion forestière sur la biocénose en Région wallonne. Study of forest management impact on biodiversity in Wallonia. 2. Objectives of Project - A better knowledge of effects of forest management and sylvicultural practices on local or regional biodiversity (by studying selected taxa). - Which sylvicultural methods have we to use when the aim is the conservation or improvement of biodiversity? 3. Potential Contribution to the Implementation of the Action Impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity: Comparison of richness and diversity of indicator taxa ( vascular flora, insects, birds) in six forest types ( evenaged coniferous high forest, evenaged beech high forest, evenaged oak high forest, unevenaged coniferous high forest, unevenaged beech high forest and unevenaged mixed high forest) and tree development stages (regeneration, young forest, mature forest) in Belgian Ardennes. Maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity trough management systems/plans: The results of the study will allow to define silvicultural guidelines. 4. Actor(s) Université Catholique de Louvain (Forest Unit) and Division de la Nature et des Forêts (Regional forest service) 5. Methods, Time Frame and Geographical Scope Periodic inventories of species in 22 selected stands. Planned as s three years study. Geographical scope: Belgian Ardennes ( ha of forest) and bordering regions of Germany, Luxembourg and France. 3

6 Action 1.2. Develop knowledge on the impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity. Review the knowledge on how forest management systems/plans can maintain and enhance biological diversity while ensuring their economic viability. 1. Title of Project Recherche sur l intérêt patrimonial des lisières forestières et leur gestion en zone 5b. Research on patrimonial value of forest edges and their management (in an objective 5b area). 2. Objectives of Project To propose better management methods of forest edges, optimising their economical, ecological and landscape functions. 3. Potential Contribution to the Implementation of the Action Maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity trough management systems/plans: Publication of a Manual of management methods for different types of forest edges. (This manual, in French, is sent to the Liaison unit by postal service). 4. Actor(s) Faculté Universitaire des Sciences Agronomiques de Gembloux. Faculty of Agronomical Sciences of Gembloux, Belgium, by demand of Division de la Nature et des Forêts (Regional forest service) 5. Methods, Time Frame and Geographical Scope Six months study, in a pilot area (two forest district). Geographical scope: Belgian Ardennes ( ha of forest). 6. Sources of Further Information See the manual sent by postal service. Available on the website 5

8 Action 1.2. Develop knowledge on the impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity. Review the knowledge on how forest management systems/plans can maintain and enhance biological diversity while ensuring their economic viability. 1. Title of Project Etude de techniques sylvicoles améliorant la biodiversité. Study of silvicultural methods improving biodiversity. 2. Objectives of Project To propose management methods of coniferous and broadleaves forest, taking into account main species of birds of the Birds directive (79/409/CEE). 3. Potential Contribution to the Implementation of the Action Impact of different forest management practices on biodiversity: In 3 pilot areas from the Special Protection Areas, evaluation of birds behaviour (for a few target-species ) in various stand structures. ( species and stages patterns). 4. Actor(s) Faculté Universitaire des Sciences Agronomiques de Gembloux.
