1 Rice Industry Overview Rice Industry Overview Research Department Key highlights: Cambodia has achieved a rapid growth of milled rice export to international market with 0.38 million ton of rice export in 2013, compared to 0.21 million ton in The main export destinations are Europe and Asia, which in 2013 accounts for 62.1% and 29.8% of total rice export respectively. Harvested area continues to increases, with approximately 3.0 million ha in 2013 resulting in 9.3 million ton of paddy rice production. There are big potential in paddy rice production, yet there are still challenges such as low productivity, rice intensification and others. Rice is the main staple of the Cambodia diet, and is the key crop cultivated in Cambodia, which comprises over 80% of agricultural land. Cambodia has two man rice crops per year; (1) a longer wet season crop, with planting from May-July and a harvest in December, and (2) a dry season crop with planning in November and a harvest in January-February. The lowland wet season rice production represents the majority of rice production in Cambodia. According to Ministry of Water Resource and Meteorology, in 2010, approximately only 24 percent of Country s rice land is irrigated, and the rest is very dependent on rainfall and seasons. Cambodia shows really low production rate compared to neighboring countries. As a result, In early 2009, the Prime Minister, Hun Sen announced to raise Cambodia as major rice exporting nation, and encouraged production of Cambodia s White Gold. The Cambodian government has spearheaded a raft of measures aimed at boosting the country s rice-export capacity. The Government aims to promote 1 million tons rice export by To achieve this goal, the government encourages participation of the private sector in paddy rice processing and milled rice export, financing for paddy rice collection, enhance trade facilitation, implementing single-stop service for export processing, and addressing grading and quality standards in compliance with internationally recognized standard. Cambodia Rice Export Cambodia has achieved a rapid growht of milled rice export to international market. Cambodia expereinces significant jump in rice export from It exported 105 tons of rice in 2010 ascompared to just 13 tons in 2009 with 735% YoY. In 2013, Cambodia export 379 thousand tons of milled rice with 84% YoY. Cambodia mainly exports two type of rices namely: Phka malis/phka Rudoul/ Jasmine rice and long grain white rice accounting for 41.4% and 51.2% of total rice export accordingly. 3 There are more than 80 rice exporters in Cambodia. Yet, only five big companies dominate half of the total rice export. Khmer Food Co., Ltd export the most, accounting for 14% of total rice export in 2013, followed by Amru Rice and Golden Rice, accounting for 13% and 9% of total rice export respectively. To meet up with expected exportation of milled rice, a boost in paddy rice production is a must. However, there are main challenges with paddy rice production in Cambodia. Low productivity- Paddy rice yield is relatively low compared to the neighboring countries with similar weather and soil condition. Rice intensification- Most Cambodian famers cultivate paddy rice once per year in rainy seasons, while farmers in Vietnam s delta region cultivate more than three times per year. This due to a lack of investment in irrigation system, and effective water management. Others- Most farmers are hard workers but they lack of technology, management, and financial resources. 3 P a g e

In 2012, Paddy rice production was about 3.1 ton per hectare of harvest area, resulting in about 9.3 million ton of paddy rice. Paddy rice production in wet season generally produces more paddy rice than that in dry season, due to the availability of the water among other things.
