3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? The (IFAA) was formerly a private school (Fresco Arts Academy) which was dissolved and then reopened by the West Ada School District. It was designed as a school of choice for students who wish to engage in the performing and fine arts. Students engage in Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Vocal Music and Instrumental Music. An audition is required before being admitted to the school. Most of our students come from areas served by our traditional high schools and middle schools in the district. Some students are "out of district" and come from other school districts such as Boise, Middleton and Nampa. The West Ada School District is the largest school district in Idaho (population), providing educational services to more than 37,000 students. It encompasses a geographically diverse area with students coming from four different cities in the Treasure Valley. The district is primarily suburban in nature. There are 50 schools in the district: 32 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 2 alternative middle schools, 5 high schools, 3 alternative high schools and 2 high schools of choice. Idaho Fine Arts was launched on July 1 of The former owners of Fresco Arts Academy approached the then Meridian School District about taking over the school site and grandfathering in students who had been in attendance at the end of the school year. The school board approved the transition and entered into an "arms length" rental agreement with the goal of working toward purchasing the physical facilities and grounds in the future. Some work was completed at the site to allow for a greater number of students to attend. The goal was to keep the same 6-12th grade format and begin with 30 students per grade level with a total of 210 students. The former school housed approximately 95 students. Two portable classrooms were constructed on site and contain four (4) classrooms. A former unfinished space was completed and turned into two music classrooms in the dance/music building. The main building had three classrooms that were expanded by removing walls. This change allowed for a larger space for computer lab use, visual art classes and a language arts classroom. In August of 2015, the West Ada School District Board of Trustees officially approved the purchase of the (formerly Fresco Arts Academy) and its associated grounds and conducted the transaction. The school district now owns the facilities, grounds, and all associated real property located in the facilities. Page 2

Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Mission Statement: Building Lives Through Artistic, Scholastic, and Civic Excellence. We follow the West Ada School District Belief and Vision Statement Beliefs: - Children are our community's most valuable asset. - A relevant, meaningful, rigorous curriculum should guide instruction to ensure all students show measurable progress and reach their optimum potential. - Students, parents, teachers, and the community are partners in the education process. - Education should reinforce work ethics and character development. - Everyone in the school community deserves dignity and respect, and should be valued as an individual. - Education is an on-going process that requires continuous evaluation and responsible change. - Schools should provide a climate that is safe, clean, and inviting. Vision: - We see a school district in which all students receive a quality education - emphasizing skills, knowledge and character development that enable them to reach their potential and become contributing members of society. Our schools will produce responsible, productive students capable of adapting to a changing, diverse world. - We see a school district in which all employees continue to improve their skills, knowledge and procedures to meet the needs of all learners. We will provide an environment that dignifies the individual, focuses on rigorous and relevant instruction, and encourages continuous improvement. We will work as a team to establish a safe, clean, inviting atmosphere within facilities that are conducive to quality education. - We see a community of well-informed citizens who support educational excellence and work in partnership with the school community to achieve quality educational results for all students. 6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. This is a notable achievement and removes the financial barrier for many students who attend the school. This year, IFAA has developed a unique block schedule that provides a weekly assembly and team building opportunity for the student and staff. These assemblies are designed to support the mission of the school. Several local and regional performing artists, humanitarians, and community leaders have already presented to the student body this year. These weekly assemblies also provide a great opportunity for the school to develop meaningful community and a healthy culture. Page 4

7 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. For the year school year, the student body totals: 184 students composed of 24 seniors, 25 juniors, 22 sophomores, 28 freshman, 25 eighth graders, 30 seventh graders and 30 sixth graders. The population consists of 42 boys and 142 girls. The faculty consists of 13 certified teachers and 2 teachers working toward certification through state-approved alternate routes. Students take academic classes that reflect the school district's curriculum. Two courses are offered for concurrent Boise State University credit and one AP class in advanced art is offered. Some students at IFAA take advantage of our district on-line classes through our Virtual School House. Arts offering at are varied in five arts disciplines. Theatre and Dance and Music departments teach a codisciplinary class titled Dance for Musical Theatre. Piano Keyboarding Lab, Guitar, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Dance as an Art Form, Music Theory and Music History are some of the courses offered at IFA to enable our students to be successful in their selected art field of study.
