2 Study tour introduction CEIS has organised an annual study visit programme from the UK to international destinations since The programmes aim is to give participants an insight into social enterprise in different cultural and economic conditions as well as building valuable long term relationships amongst participants. The 2014 programme is particularly exciting as this is the first time an Asian country has hosted Social Enterprise World Forum. Korea is a fascinating country in many ways, with a unique history of transition from developing nation to a major international economic force. The can do approach has also been applied to social enterprise, with national government policy to support and develop the sector, accreditation of social enterprises by the Social Enterprise Promotion Agency, wage subsidy for disadvantaged employees and complete clarity on the number of social enterprises in Korea (due to accreditation). 80% of the delegates at SEWF 2014 will be from Asian countries where social enterprise has taken hold and is addressing significant social economic and environmental issues. In recent years Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Singapore have accelerated their social enterprise development: it will be fascinating to engage, understand and share experiences. Key themes during the SEWF conference will include social enterprise as an employability solution, social care and health innovations in social enterprise, as well as conference tracks dealing with social investment, social innovation, education and creating supportive social enterprise ecosystems. After the SEWF event an international group of participants will travel to Shanghai to have a unique experience of social enterprise in China. Usually language and accessibility are barriers to visitors getting an accurate insight into the social and economic issues that social enterprises are addressing in China. Through our partnership with the British Council we will engage in a workshop with government officials and enterprise leaders, and visit social enterprises operating in the field of elderly care, employability, education and training and disability services. Social enterprise is one of the strategies to address the impact of rural to urban migration in China: our visit programme will provide a unique insight and opportunity to engage with this emerging sector. 3 Study tour introduction A consistent feature of the annual visit programme has been the benefit of assembling a group of sector leaders and supporters and providing them with the opportunity to network and to critically analyse the host enterprise, country and issues. Evaluations have consistently shown that the longest term benefits are from the group relationships and this trip will continue that theme as we anticipate a combination of senior officials from Scottish and UK Government, Scottish and UK and international sector leaders and supporters with frontline practitioners keen to learn, establish relationships and expand networks. The programme is suitable for social enterprise leaders and senior staff; support agency and network staff with the ability to cascade the learning and lessons across a range of agencies; social investors; public sector officials with a social enterprise remit, or Board members of social enterprises interested in expanding their knowledge of the sector and its potential. Previous visit programmes have: Influenced the shape and content of social enterprise policy and initiatives; Resulted in the creation of joint ventures between participants; Generated new business ideas and new organisation strategies; Established peer support groups for leaders who continue to share and support each other; Encouraged some participants to join social enterprise Boards or expand their professional development through education and training; Furthered the position of Scotland and the UK as countries that seek to understand what works elsewhere and what doesn t in order to improve our own systems and performance, leading to worldwide recognition as having the most supportive ecosystem for social enterprise.

6 Social enterprise visit suggestions Part 1: Seoul, Republic of Korea Social enterprise visit suggestions Yangcheon-gu Incubating Center The Yangcheon-gu was the first regional autonomous group to enter a business incubating center consortium saw the opening of the second social venture incubating center in Haenuri Town in Yangcheon-gu. The Yangcheon center boasts creative space designed to support creativity and communication. It hosts social ventures selected through social entrepreneurship development projects by the Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency, with 35 ventures incubated in the first year followed by 28 in the second year. Comprehensive support services are provided to the social entrepreneurs, including coaching from experts and permanent mentors, networking and back office support. Seongmisan Village The village has its roots in the 1994 establishment of the first co-op type day care center in Korea ( Joint Parenting Co-op Woori Day Care Center ). In 1997, the Dotori After-School Day Care Center was established, followed by the Pullipsae After-School Day Care Center in In 2000, personnel from these four co-ops came together to set up the Mapo Dure Co-op. With the announcement of development plans for Seongmisan Mountain (located in Seongsan-dong, Mapo-gu) in 2001, residents who were concerned about the destruction of the environment due to development work began to protest against the plans. After much effort, the Seongmisan development project was eventually canceled in Such triumph triggered various community activities. Seongmisan Village is now somewhat removed from the close-knit atmosphere it was conceived in and is now more significant on a symbolic level. Seongmisan Village is not yet complete, continuing to demonstrate dynamic change.

7 Study visit programme Part 2: Shanghai, China Social enterprise visit suggestions Shanghai Shi Yan Business Consultancy Co. Ltd Shanghai Shi Yan runs a Starcamp, a programme which helps children aged between two and 12 with autism or learning disabilities to acquire the skills they need to be able to attend mainstream schools. It also has an education management cloud platform which offers a consultancy service and provides education professionals with advice on rehabilitation and child development. buy42.com This social enterprise launched China s first online charity store, to promote charitable giving and public service and creates employment opportunities for the disabled. This online business model allows it to reach a national market without generating high carbon emissions. Hangzhou Xiezhi Travel Agency Co. Ltd Xiezhi Travel Agency is concerned with college students seeking employment and accommodation and to help them find jobs by offering career training and job information. Shanghai Xingeng Philanthropy Service Centre As a social enterprise concerned with poverty reduction, Xingeng Workshop pursues to improve the survival ability of vulnerable groups and give them more development opportunities following the principle of teaching fishing is better than to give fish. Shanghai Technology Centre for the Elderly Shanghai Technology Centre has established an online community for the elderly, where members can widen their existing social networks, gain self-confidence and a sense of worth by communicating with people of similar interests.
