Te purpose of te revision of te index of persons employed in te retail trade is to adapt te index to structural canges of retail trade sector by renewing bot te sample of observation units and te used extrapolation factors. n te present revision of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade, based on year , as well as in te previous one wit base year , te new statistical classification of economic activities of te U NAC Rev.2 was applied in conformity wit Regulation (C 893/2006 of te uropean Parliament and of te Council. Te most important amendment to te retail trade section of te new NAC Rev.2 classification compared to te previous NAC Rev. classification is te inclusion of retail sale of automotive fuel and lubricants under retail * Recalculation of indices by canging te base year (from 2005 to 200, wile maintaining uncanged teir annual and quarterly growt rates.
2 trade instead of its allocation to "trade, maintenance and repair of motor veicles and motorcycles" in accordance wit NAC Rev.. According to tis approac, te time series of te above index are now calculated including or not including persons employed in enterprises dealing wit retail sale of automotive fuel and lubricants (group 473 of NAC Rev 2: Retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores. Te last revision of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade, wit 200 as te base year (20000,0 was based on data from te Business Register of LSTAT compiled from administrative sources, in accordance wit turnover data of retail trade enterprises for te year Survey design - Selection of enterprise sample Te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade refers to te wole country. Te General ndex covers te economic activity classes wit codes: of NAC Rev. 2. Four aggregated levels of economic classes are produced as follows: Te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade refers to te wole country. Te General ndex covers te economic activity classes wit four digit codes 47 to 4799 of te statistical classification of conomic Activities NAC Rev.2 and it is broken down into four categories: General ndex General ndex except for Retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores Food sector index Non-food sector index (except for retail sale of automotive fuel Te survey for te compilation of te index covers 4,80 retail trade enterprises listed in te Business Register aving an annual turnover (in 200 equal to or iger tan euro. Out of tese enterprises a representative random sample of 754 enterprises was selected across te country wit elements from 58 Regional Units. Te single stratified random sampling metod was applied, employing te enterprise as a surveyed unit. Te sampling frame used for te sample design was based on te Business Register (BR of te LSTAT. Te enterprises included in te survey were stratified as follows: a. By categories of aggregated economic activity classes as follows:. Supermarkets 2. Department stores 3. Food, beverages and tobacco 4. Automotive fuel-lubricants 5. Parmaceuticals and cosmetics 6. Cloting and footwear 2 7. Furniture, electrical goods, ouseold goods 3 8. Books, stationery and oter articles 4 9. Retail sale via mail order ouses or via nternet 0. Retail sale of second-and goods in stores. Retail trade not in stores, stalls or markets b. By size class of enterprises. n eac category of aggregated activity classes, te enterprises were stratified into six (6 size classes, according to teir size, determined by teir annual turnover (in 200 in BR as follows: Dispensing cemist, medical and ortopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores 2 Textiles, cloting, footwear and leater goods in specialised stores 3 Furniture, ligting equipment, audio and video equipment, ardware, paints and glass, electrical ouseold appliances, and oter ouseold articles. music and video recordings in specialised stores 4 Books, newspapers and stationery, computers, periperal units and software, telecommunications equipment, carpets, rugs, wall and floor coverings, sporting equipment., games and toys, flowers, plants, seeds, fertilisers, pet animals and pet food, watces and jewellery. oter retail sale of new goods in specialised stores 2
3 Size class Annual Turnover ( 200, , ,00 900, , , ,500,00 0,000, ,000,00 40,000, ,000,00+ n eac stratum tat is created by crossing te above stratification criteria, a sample of enterprises was selected wit equal probabilities and by applying systematic sampling. Tis sample is a sub-sample of te existent sample of enterprises tat is used to compile te revised Retail Trade Turnover and Volume ndex ( Te enterprises tat belong to te 6 t size class are surveyed exaustively. Specifically, of te enterprises included in te survey sample for te Retail Trade Turnover and Volume ndex ( , 754 enterprises were selected covering all te strata of te above survey, wic resulted from te cross-linking of te economic activity ( categories of aggregated economic activity classes and te size class of enterprises. Tis approac was based on te fact tat: Te reference population for te variable "number of persons employed" of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade is te same and just as extensive as te reference population of te "turnover" variable of te Turnover ndex in Retail Trade. Tere is a strong correlation between te "turnover" variable and te "number of persons employed" variable of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade tus ensuring a satisfactory level of reliability for tat second variable. 5. Compiling te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade Te index is calculated by applying te caining metod. First, te moving based index is calculated by comparing te estimated persons of employed previous quarter. Next, te fixed-based index for te current quarter is calculated by multiplying te moving- based index by te fix-based index of te previous quarter. for te current quarter q wit te corresponding value of te 5.. Compiling te index series For te present revision of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade ( , as well as te previous one ( it was deemed necessary to calculate parallel series for tis index, including persons employed in enterprises selling automotive liquid fuel and lubricants and witout including suc persons. Tis was decided as a result of te inclusion of automotive fuel and lubricants in retail trade and in order to maintain comparability wit te previous series of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade (200000,0. n order to establis te link wit te previous series of te ndex of Persons mployed in Retail Trade ( , tese series underwent backdating and backcasting by including te persons employed in enterprises selling automotive liquid fuel and lubricants and witout including suc persons as required by Commission Regulation (C 472/2008 concerning backcasting. 0.
