Akron Board of Education employees assigned to drive Board-owned or leased veicles MUST BE FAMILIAR wit te Business Affairs Transportation Services directives regarding DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES. Please review te Business Affairs directives (following tis page). Once you ave reviewed te bulletin, please also review te VEHICLE ACCIDENT REPORT (see sample following Business Affairs directive) wic is to be completed sould an accident occur. PLEASE be sure to review te VEHICLE ACCIDENT PROCEDURES as tey relate to cargeable and/or preventable accidents. Tis information is found on Page 3 of tis bulletin. 2. IMPORTANT: If you are using a Career Education van to transport students, you MUST ave a valid Van Driver s License. For information about te Van Driver s License, please call te Office of Career Education at

2 REVISED JULY 1, 2002 TO: RE: AKRON BOARD OF EDUCATION EMPLOYEES AKRON BOARD OF EDUCATION EMPLOYEES USING PERSONAL VEHICLES ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS Akron Board of Education employees using teir personal veicles on official scool business are provided primary liability (tird party) coverage under our Artur J. Gallager & Company fleet insurance. Tis primary insurance coverage is provided for Akron Board of Education employees using teir personal veicles under te scope of employment. Employees are defined as individuals included in te Akron Board of Education payroll system wo ave taxes and retirement witeld. Scope of employment is interpreted as tose activities necessary and usual in order to carry out daily job responsibilities. Examples of employees use of personal veicles on official scools business: teacers, psycologists, Maintenance Services and Buildings & Grounds employees, supervisors and coordinators assigned or working at more tan one location; employees taking students ome if tey miss teir normal means of transportation; and teacers wo supervise students working at job sites troug an approved educational program. Te Board s insurance becomes primary coverage and te employees insurance is secondary coverage for automobile liability claims tat may result from te employees use of teir personal veicles on scool business. Te Board s policy would response to tird party property damage or bodily injury resulting from te accident. Tis coverage pertains to te liability portion of te accident. Tere is NO COVERAGE for pysical damage to te employee s personal veicle. Tis damage would ave to be covered by te employee s personal insurance policy. If liable, an accident claim must be filed under te Artur J. Gallager fleet insurance policy. Te process for filing is as follows: Te employee obtains a copy of te police report made at te scene of te accident. An Akron Board of Education Veicle Accident Report Form is to be obtained by te employee from te office of te principal or departmental ead. Te employee must complete te Veicle Accident Report Form and forward it wit te police report attaced to Transportation Services witin 12 ours of te accident. Artur J. Gallager Insurance Co. will be notified of te accident by te coordinator, Transportation Services, and a claims adjuster will contact te employee. Please Note: Tese guidelines are in effect until future notice. A copy of tese guidelines can also be viewed and printed by logging on te Document On Demand Program. 3 AKRON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Business Affairs VEHICLE ACCIDENT PROCEDURES Te following veicle accident procedures ave been developed for staff members wit a cargeable and/or preventable accident wile driving a Board of Education owned/leased veicle. A cargeable accident is any accident were te operator receives a citation from te police department for an accident. A preventable accident is any accident were damaged or personal injury is involved tat could ave been prevented by a reasonable effort to avoid it. Te Veicle Accident Procedure Committee, consisting of a representative from Human Resources, Business Affairs and a representative of te union/association will conduct a review of all accidents involving Board owned/leased veicles. Te committee will carefully review te reports of any traffic accidents and consider all available background information. Points will be cumulative troug two years of te occurrence. Points will be removed from te driver s record two years from te anniversary date of te occurrence. Weater Adverse weater conditions are not a valid excuse for being involved in an accident. Rain, snow, etc. increase te azards of driving but do not cause an accident. Drivers need to adjust teir driving to te prevailing weater conditions. 3
