Politecnico di Milano organises, in close cooperation with the Photonics Unit of the European Commission and with the European Technology Platform Photonics21, an info day on the photonics research and innovation priorities in industrial production. The agenda focuses on Photonics opportunities as a KET within Horizon 2020 programme and the smart specialisation strategy. The role of photonics in fostering technology transfer, innovation and industrial competitiveness will be presented, together with Italian success stories in industrial production. An open discussion on the topics presented will end the info day. Attendance is free of charge, but pre-registration at is required.

On one side fiber and disc laser sources consolidate their position and specialize in function of the specific application: with pulsed or continuous emission, with single or multi mode beam quality, with beams propagated and focused by traditional optics or scanners. On the other side, the new diode sources come forward among the high brilliance sources and demonstrate the capacity to reach power densities high enough for cutting or key-hole welding of metallic materials. The round table in the morning session will be dedicated to the comparison of the established and emergening high brilliance laser sources, detailing the technical solutions, applications, and advantages of each one.
