BUILDING BRIDGES / TRA LE DUE SPONDE Intercultural education at the time of new fundamentalisms Field research, didactic experimentations, educational projects GREAT HALL, University of Milan-Bicocca Building U6, Piazza dell Ateneo Nuovo, 1 Milan (ITALY) May 26, 2016 h AM to 7.00 PM Call for papers #1 Introduction The Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day continues a project started in 2002 at the Faculty of Education, to promote and consolidate comparisons, exchanges, knowledge in the field of intercultural education. The previous Third Intercultural Day (2014) has defined an interdisciplinary dimension in dealing with many issues that help the construction of thought in intercultural education. Researchers and teachers from different areas of Human Sciences for Education gathered at the Department R. Massa Bicocca University of Milan: Anthropological, Linguistical, Psychological, Philosophical, Sociological, Historical/Geographical, Artistic, Educational. After two years, the Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day intends to focus attention on the issues of Pedagogy, Didactic, (Instructional) Training in intercultural field. The goal is to enrich the capital of real content and implement valid methods for intercultural education (in Italy and in other countries) in the difficult years of these new fundamentalism. The Day/Conference will have the same logistical organization as the previous. To respond to the training needs of participants a plenary session will be held in the morning and some parallel thematic sessions in the afternoon. Presentation Call for papers #1 Intercultural competence at the time of new fundamentalisms (whose cruel images and whose proclamations are circulating pervasively in traditional media and on Web 2.0) requires those involved in education to be active inside and outside the school, in the context of adult education, in educational opportunities and places outside of school; in public spaces and daily interactions. There is a growing need of new initiatives in the task, commitment, responsibility to invent bridges of communication between different cultural and religious groups, trying (as far as possible and as far as education is responsible...) to bring them closer by avoiding to take positions outside, detached, distant. As educators, teachers, students who are trained for the educational professions, we

4 02. need to develop within us the belief that the possible sources to start intercultural landscapes are many and that we must be recognized them, tempt them and walk them. It should educate themselves and educate students and young people to pursue the path of mutual adaptation to common spaces, to develop the ability to approach different habits. We must grow in ourselves and in our students the curiosity to observe without judgment, the ability to live in public spaces of towns and cities; learn to listen with curiosity, interest, appreciate the many languages spoken by others. The Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day (as the previous Days) aims to represent a significant opportunity of training for teachers of all school levels, for educators, social workers, administrators, students and graduate students that are formed to the educational professions. Will be presented reports of theoretical and/or empirical educational projects, training programs, educational and didactic experimentation (completed or in progress) on various issues that fall within the construction of intercultural thought in education and contribute to expand and enrich it. The Fourth BIcocca Intercultural Day welcomes abstract submission related (but not limited) to the following themes: Teaching projects of intercultural inclusion Educational workshops to ensure the right to education for all Learning of L2 (second language), comparison between languages Education projects bilingual or trilingual Facilitation of knowledge of the area for adult and child immigrants Relations between schools and families with non-native language and cultural background School policies to support the right to education for adolescents who do not speak Italian School policies to support the right to education for not native speakers teenagers Education to the knowledge of each other s values, and the family cultures The reports and the planned communication will be in Italian (English on request). There is no simultaneous translation bilingual nor any other translation services. The reports and the planned papers presented at a conference will be in Italian (English on required). Procedures for the submission of proposals The Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day has been approved in the Council of the Department in July 2015; then it was presented informally in October at the meeting of Teachers of Intercultural Education of Italian Universities of SIPED (Italian Society of Pedagogy), but an official invitation to submit proposals, starts officially from November 14, The call is open to researchers and academics,

5 03. teachers of various school levels, experts of Interculturale Centers, people who work in Associations that deal with education and foreign communities, operators of educational services of local authorities, etc. Proposal may be presented in the form of reports (15-20 minutes), or communications (5-10 minutes) or as posters. For reports and communications it is required to sent an abstract in Italian and English and the same must contains: Title; Authors (full name, affiliation, mailing address, ); 3-5 keywords; General description of the research or project or didactic or pedagogical experimentation (max 500 words); Objectives and theoretical background (max 200 words); Methodology (max 100 words); Results (max 100 words); Bibliography (max 100 words) For posters (to be prepared in the final version, in Italian or in English at the option of the authors) an abstract in Italian and English is required to be sent and the same must contains: Title; Authors (full name, affiliation, mailing address, ); 3-5 keywords; General description of the context, objectives; Description of the activities, tools; Results, materials products; References (for a total maximum of 500 words). The proposal submission must be made no later than February 29, 2016, 12:00 pm writing directly to the address of the conference: A Scientific Committee consisting of six members of renown (whose names will be announced later) will have the task of selecting the proposals submitted, through a process of peer-reviewed double blinded. The procedures to register as participants in the Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day will be communicated later. There is no registration fee. Important dates November 14, 2015 Sending of the first Call for proposals for papers February 29, 2016 Deadline for submission of proposals March 13, 2016 Notice to the authors of accepted papers May 18, 2016 Closing date for entries to the Congress May 26, 2016 Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day Proposals submitted and accepted will become part of the program of the Fourth Bicocca Intercultural Day and will be collected in an abstract-book with ISBN. As well as with the Third Bicocca Intercultural Day, it is likely to present the opportunity of the subsequent publication of a book, but is not currently defined.
